    Your attitude is so healthy. Seeing the good in the older films instead of taking ignorant cheap shots, and also the wide range of the types of films you covered here is so refreshing. I like how you framed Starting Over as, to paraphrase, "I'm an adult and like seeing films about adults as an adult" and that those are rare today ... that hit hard and I so feel that. Good job, Heath.

      Thanks! I love ninjas, pirates, spaceships, and pew pew lasers, but if I only lived on that, I wouldn't be a very well-rounded person. I also appreciate and crave stories about love, loss, and life--without green screen and CGI. In a candy bar culture, I crave meat and potatoes.

    BTW (sorry for barging in again), re: BLUEBEARD - if I am not mistaken, the earlier one of which you may have mentioned, also from KINO, is probably the version with Richard Burton and Joey Heatherton.
    Someone complained about the picture quality of the John Carradine BLUEBEARD, but, let's face it, any earlier edition available is most likely going to be the from one of the Mill Creek 100/200 Movie sets, which were nice but, yeah, the picture quality was rarely that good. Willing to bet that the edition from Kino is going to look a lot better.

    Great video, Heath! Tom Skerrit, I know him from ALIEN and TOP GUN the most. I recently began rewatching the TV series "Kolchak: The NIghtstalker" with Darren McGavin.
    Tom was in one of the episodes as a political candidate that made a deal with the devil. He also starred in the first POISON IVY movie with Drew Barrymore, (1992).

    Just a brief note: a 4K scan is not the same thing as a full 4K restoration. If they are going to put it on a 4K disc, it ought to have a proper restoration done first, and that can be pricey if you want it done right

    I am a longtime fan of silent film comedy and the VITAGRAPH disc opened up a whole new era for me. Most people associate silent film comedy in the 1910s with Mack Sennett style baggy pants comedians wearing outlandish make up and performing slapstick humor. Instead what we find in this set are films made by such people as Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Drew who are normal, middle class folks, living normal middle class lives engaged in situation comedies. It’s a fascinating glimpse of how real people looked and acted in the 1910s. Of course this all changed in 1920 when Larry Semon embraced Sennett’s crazy style and became Vitagraph’s top comic whose films are featured on Disc 3 of this set.

    I was thinking of getting, "Cry Baby", since that it has a lot of new special features. I saw the film recently with a live commentary by John Waters in person at the Rio Theatre in Vancouver and it was a very fun experience and as fun as, "Hairspray." I got the blu-ray and it will be interesting watching the director's cut of the film. Also, "Friends", was shot on film? That makes sense. Maybe, "Seinfeld", will get a 4K box set in the future?

    I ordered the Philo Vance, it's a great series and many of the prior transfers were very poor quality. Plus I really like good commentaries. However, I take issue with your "Why No 4K" shirt, though you are entitled to wear it. Just remember the majority of video fans do not have 4K TVs or players. If you look at the Nielsen monthly video sales you will see Blue Ray outsells 4K by a good percentage every month. Notice also , the one 4 K release you reviewed, like most 4 K releases also includes a Blu-Ray. This drives up the cost for BluRay buyers. The Cry-Baby (4KUHD/Blu Ray) retails for $40. DVDs generally still out sell BluRay and 4 Ks combined. Check the figures out on line. Also you may not know most Kino BluRays are also issued on separate DVDS.

    I’m curious if you are implying that MST3K was the cause of movie laughter craze? Aren’t there movies seemingly made for that purpose?

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  3 месяца назад

      My biggest problem with MST3K is that they made a career off of mocking other people's hard work. I don't know any filmmakers--including the bad ones--that set out to make a movie worth mocking. With MST3K, they would often feature some great films--This Island Earth is an actual masterpiece full of messages and theming, but whenever I bring it up, people talk about how funny it is. It's not funny at all, it's awesome--it just got ruined by the kids in the back of the class who throw paper airplanes at the people who try. If anyone needs further evidence of this, consider that the RiffTrax treatment has been given to all sorts of modern movies that are fan favorites: Top Gun Maverick, The Lord of the Rings, Cobra, Dune, and many, many others. Their tag line is "we make movies funny."
      And now here we are, some 30 years later, and a generation cannot watch anything without bringing in a sense of ironic detachment and superiority. They're not seeing movies for what they are, they're looking for flaws, errors, and things to make fun of. What a horrible legacy that goes against everything most cinephiles stand for.

    • @planestrainsandautomobiles8065
      @planestrainsandautomobiles8065 3 месяца назад

      Nice opinion. Can’t say I wish MST3K and other ‘riffers’ didn’t become mainstream because they introduced me to a lot of movie franchises that built up my knowledge. However, I say that I have tried to make films by myself, I took two video classes in high school, and making anything for a film isn’t just hard to do, but it’s tiring and frankly an endurance test to put in details. I feel bad when people criticize details that I know took months to complete, just because it doesn’t look real.
      One more thing, I’m interested in where you go in the future with this, and I don’t want to ask you questions without something to call you by. Can I call you cereal man? Or do you have a name you prefer? You can call me Bagels.
