It always sucks when we have bad experiences, but the upside is that they suck so much we learn from because we don't want to ever feel that again. Great video and thank you for sharing your learning process.

This is very true. Learning from my mistakes and moving forward with that knowledge has definitely helped me. Thank you for your continued support!

Good stuff. I just wiped my discus population by not quarantine . It's my second kill off due to that. Big tank is next. It seems we alll make some of the same mistakes even with endless hours of video available

I know right lol. As much as I knew in my mind I should quarantine I still let my excitement get the best of me.

not planning the stocking also limits the kind of equipment to be added in the future

This is a good point. Everything down to the type of filtration the tank is set up for could be affected by stocking and be difficult or expensive to change. Thank you for the comment.

Not for nothing, I added 5 kuhlis to my tank full of cherry shrimp and snails and they pretty much decimated my snail population. I thought they were the safe loaches. I've seen them attack shrimp maybe twice. It seemed personal though, idk.

It really sounds like everybody has a different experience when it comes to mixing loaches and shrimp. I guess it’s luck of the draw. Thanks for the comment!

Good wisdom. but I will say if you add a LOT more plants you can get easily have big fish and bigger shrimp like you have. Plus more plants will improve health and look awesome. Get some easy stems like L Sesiflora, Brazillian Pennywort or even hornwort. I have great luck overstocking my tanks because of PLANTS!!!

I do think heavier planting is the way I should go. More plants definitely make a tank look awesome. Your tanks are evidence of that. Who knows, enough plants and maybe even some babies will survive. Thank you!

Yeah. Good sized aquarium is good because it's easier to maintain stable conditions. And plants will help a lot with that, clearing every excess nutrient.
I also would suggest going for only 20% water change, even if you need to do it more regularly, than going for a 50% all at once.

Gotta get a few Yo-Yo loaches. They’ll destroy the snails. I have 3 LARGE ones and they have never bothered a single shrimp (yet).

What kind of shrimp do you keep them with? I’ve heard some people say their loaches don’t seem to bother their shrimp. But I’m just nervous about it, especially since the bamboo shrimp don’t seem quick to move out of the way. Maybe it’s one of those risky things I’ll still try later on lol. Thank you for the comment!

With that amount of snail population, you were clearly overfeeding fish, as you said.
Have you realized what happened was the 1st problem? I don't think it was any chemical, maybe it was because on the water change temperature/water conditions were too diferent, since it happened right after a water change.

With that first problem I’m pretty sure it was the hose I used. Something on the interior of it leeching into the water. At some point I’ll run a little experiment to confirm that. I know the water temperature and conditions weren’t far off from what the tank already had.

Loach are not obligate Muscivore’s. They eat one larger snail a week in my experience with a group of 8 yo-yo. They are cool fish, intelligent and only eat snail when there is not other options. I keep Kuhli loach with shrimp and trapdoor snails and the inverts both have healthy populations so acknowledge failure is broadcast with more vigor than success. Treat your wife well, I’d bet she still has resentment from your tank flood. Give her a nice dinner and she’ll forget for a week 🙂

Wow, one large snail a week sounds very slow. I would’ve assumed a much faster rate for 8 Yoyo loaches. And believe me she had to be wined and dined after the tank flood 😂. I’ll have to keep it up now to keep her forgetting. Thank you for the support!
