  • In this video we provide a comprehensive review of the BLM Pilot Knob Long Term Visitor Area (LTVA) near Winterhaven, CA and Yuma, Arizona. This may be the perfect snowbird winter getaway. For just $180 you can stay for up to 7 months without having to move and from September 15 to April 15 dry camping (with services (garbage included and free water and $ dump nearby). There are 10 LTVAs in the SW Arizona, SE California area and your pass gives you access to all of them.

    I wound-up liking this better than the other more famous Imperial Dam LTVA - Only 11 minutes from Yuma - all the stores you could need. Also less people and campers have more room; it seemed fewer huge family RVs making their rock-fence compound - staking their 1 acre claim. Yet it seemed campers generally make effort to honor a neighborly distance.
    I got to know the Chevron staff quite favorably. They get some grouchy customers, so be nice and let them get to know you personally.
    So many CHP, Fire and Border control situated there (the Hwy Ag & Border stations and the CHP station as well). I never had any interaction with the Camp Host(s) - they stay at their Posts?
    So many military helicopters tooling low overhead, so I hope you don't have Dessert Storm PTSD.
    There is a Pilot Knob North-South, divided by Hwy 8 and the constant 3 mile long cargo trains - watch it - trains stop for lunch, the train road gate comes down, cut-of North LTVA from accessing the road exit !! One train breakdown left me in the dessert for 4 hours and I missed appointment.
    Also it is frequent that Mex Agriculture is burning-off something scanky and my lungs have a hard time.
    I was also there much of the Summer, so hot and all alone for days

    There hasn't been any water at the Sidewinder Chevron for the last 3 years. It's good that they finally got their dump station working. A couple years ago we stayed there for a couple months while visiting Los Algodones (and the Casino😉) and had to dump and fill at the Pilot Knob RV Resort near there, but I don't know if they do that anymore now that they are a TT park. I have filled at the Interstate rest area in the median between the 2 lanes. The water there is better there than at Q or Imperial Dam. I recommend getting fuel and propane at the Winterhaven exit. If you go right off of I-8 you enter Yuma, AZ. There's propane at the Party Time Market on First St. (take a right and go a couple blocks on the left) and several gas stations in the area. You'll save a ton of money compared to Ca. prices.

      Chip, this is fantastic information. Thanks so much. Yes, as we were leaving the area I asked the ladies at the Chevron when they might get their water turned back on and they said probably never because the well is new but the state is requiring all these inspections and then not coming out and doing them. I didn't know that it had been that long since they didn't have water. But yes at least they do have the dump site open. Good info on propane as well as other options from the campgrounds too. Appreciate you taking the time to provide those other options.- Kyle

    • @thewanderingshores

      Pilot knob only has dumpsters. No bathrooms or showers at all. Imperial dam is the one that has access to showers if they're open over at the campground by the dam. As for mice, we've never really had any issues in the 4 years that we've spent the winters there- Kyle and Michelle

    I checked out several ltvsa last jan including pilot knob. That ltva eas so terrible i stopped for an hr and decided to leave. Terrible ltva, ugly, noisy. No amenities. One star rating in my book

    • @thewanderingshores
      @thewanderingshores  11 месяцев назад

      Yes, some of them have plenty of amenities and others like pilot knob have next to nothing. Plus with it being so close to the interstate, you've got that additional noise. Our favorite of all of them so far is imperial dam. It's crowded but there are enough remote spots to get away from everything too. Have you tried that one?
