- Until the War on Terrorism, Vietnam was the longest conflict in American history. By the end of that war in April 1975, 57,939 would be killed or missing in action, with an estimated 250,000 South Vietnamese soldiers also dead. The Gulf of Tonkin incident sparked the great conflict that had been a series of small counterinsurgency missions. This event was the reason that President Lyndon B. Johnson justified going to Congress to appropriate military funding to expand American military involvement in Vietnam, starting a major conflict that would last until April 1975. Hosted by Colin D. We all should be heeding the words of Smedley Butler. "The trouble with America is that when the dollar only earns 6 percent over here, then it gets restless and goes overseas to get 100 percent. Then the flag follows the dollar and the soldiers follow the flag". Of course this applies to every empire that has ever existed. There is little doubt in my mind that without Johnson, there would have been no Vietnam war. Kennedy was working to diffuse the tensions with the Soviets at the time and the MIC Eisenhower warned of wasn't going to allow it. One other significant fact: George Morrison, the commander of the fleet that was involved in Tonkin incident was father to Jim Morrison of the Doors 😉. Keep up the good work Colin and Happy New Year!

I used to drive by Adm. Morrisons' home in Coronado, CA. while I was stationed at NAS North Island. It was just north of the Hotel Del Coronado. Jim's brother Danny had a bar in Coronado where I used to hang out often. I loved the fact that sailors were welcome there. It was one of the few places that we were welcome at all during those times.
So is this the most likely motivation for JFK assassination? I mean to think a president could get in the way of the country military complex that deserves its own documentary to see how far these companies go back and who is benefiting.

I actually did a research paper on this back in high school. How many HS kids today have even heard of the Turner Joy, or the Maddox, let alone the Gulf of Tonkin? The United States federal government has a fairly atrocious track record of righteousness. Almost like the FFs were correct for believing in a tiny federal government, with very limited powers.

Myth: The rationale for US intervention in Viet Nam was based on a fraud.
Fact: The Tonkin Gulf incident was not a fraud. It was the motivating force behind the Tonkin Gulf Resolution.
This myth is based on the false belief that US involvement began with the USS Maddox and USS Turner Joy "false" torpedo attacks, known as the Tonkin Gulf incidents.
North Vietnamese General Vo Nguyen Giap himself admitted that torpedo patrol boats attacked the USS Maddox.
The USS Turner Joy incident is more controversial, but multiple eyewitness accounts of professional sailors, both enlisted and officers, confirm the events of that night.
The testimony of sailors involved in the Turner Joy incident confirms the presence of at least one PT boat (visually sighted), one torpedo wake (visually sighted), one searchlight (visually sighted) and one PT boat sunk (visually sighted).
The Commander of the Destroyer Task Force, Captain John J. Herrick, testified before Congress that the attack on the Turner Joy occurred.
Captain Herrick recommended the Silver Star be awarded to the Turner Joy's commanding officer, Commander Roger C. Barnhart, Jr. (He was awarded a Bronze Star instead).
The first US combat troops were committed to Vietnam in February, 1965, about seven months after the Tonkin Gulf incident.

This decision to launch war is always a bipartisan one. Kennedy the Democrat had Lodge the Republican as Ambassador to puppet government of Diem brothers who took over after the French abandoned Emperor Bao Dai. When the Diem brother got out of line they were overthrown in a military coup Ambassador lodge engineered.

Navy SEALs were in Vietnamese waters raiding supply ships way BEFORE the false flag BS Gulf of Tonkin incident. One of THE least likely characters to be an ex-SEAL was my ex-boss Gary, a large heavy set man with thick glasses and an awkwardly amiable goofy personality. Clinton had not declassified anything yet, and Gary's brother Kurt told me Gary was a SEAL. Gary told me about surveying the beaches and coasts of Cuba but gave almost no information about Vietnam, Cambodia or Laos, except that he was in that area. After Clinton declassified everything I got some truth in more detail. LBJ was essentially a walking talking piece of pig shit. We had been in and out of Vietnam, Cambodia & Laos since the late 1940s, in some capacity. LBJ just needed to make it legitimate, so the big money could come rolling in, so he sold a huge lie to the American people. It's like the bullshit that was reported about Iraq in the 2000s after 9-11.

My grandfather served in ww2 Korea and 3 tours in Vietnam before retiring in 1967 as a first sergeant with 1st cavalry airmobile. He and every other NCO thought westmoreland had shit for brains and that it was stupid to try to fight a body count war against the comms . They wanted to sweep the country and hold the territory but westmoreland and LBJ wanted to fly our men into the shit in helos and drop them off to fend for themselves. My grandfather ultimately died from agent orange - he refused to go to the American legion in town because westmoreland would go there and had donated his books to become the westmoreland library at post 28 In Spartanburg SC.

I was a child when this happened. I can remember as clear as day my grandfather, a life long “ yellow dog” Democrat, cursing LBJ and swearing he’d lied about something. Looks like he was on to something.
For those not familiar with the term "yellow dog Democrat" it goes back to a time when the country wasn't so polarized so it was possible for people to select a candidate based on something other than party affiliation. Yellow dog Democrats where those who were so partisan they would vote for a "yellow dog" (mongrel dog) if he was on the Democrat ticket rather than voting for any Republican. So for Scott's uncle to to curse LBJ was like a college professor today saying "Let's go Brandon".

I was in Vietnam and the numbers is wrong. Laos and Cambodia was totally different area. Did we have people there yes but not that many. All that killing was done by those countries but it happened when the Khmer Rouge took over do some research here. Did some innocent people was killed yes on all sides. I have read reports that as VP of the USA Johnson said to lobbyists of the Military Industrial Complex "get me the presidency and Ill give you your war". Note that this alleged comment was made in his VP days prior to Dallas 11/22/1963.

In the spring of 63 he told Mike Mansfield that the only reason he kept us in Vietnam was his stake in a sixty-four election he said "I can't pull out until 1965 until after I'm reelected"
My grandfather was one of the men that operated the catapults on the Ticonderoga (1958-1963). I’m pretty sure he was already honorably discharged from the navy by the time the gulf of Tonkin incident happened. He always told me he didn’t believe that what the reports stated.

McNamara years later said, on a televised intetview, that the gulf of tonkin incident never occured. Johnson just really wanted to escalate the conflict with Vietnam.
I knew the war in Vietnam had started with fishy circumstances, and that Johnson was corrupt, but hearing of his investment portfolio is new. It all makes sense and is not all that different from present day politicians benefiting from the military industrial complex.

Those were Dark Days in our country's history. IMO, as the country woke up to the facts of the actions taken by 'the corrupt leaders of our country' at the time; their 'visceral animus' towards these leaders unjustly spilled over onto our troops returning back from a war they valiantly fought as Patriots of our country. For me that is the greatest travesty of this war. For the 58,281 KIA's, their pain is over. For the 153,372 WIA's and all other veterans of the war the struggles of overcoming the experiences of war and most painful the unjust hateful welcome they received when they returned, still to this day wears heavy on many of their minds and hearts. I know many of these courageous men. Their pain is real. What kind of society turns against it's soldiers, patriots, with such venom as was displayed by that generation? Let us Vow and Pray with all sincerity that this will never happen again. Let us collectively hold the corrupt accountable and never victimize the innocent again.
Lady Bird Johnson owned a lot of Halliburton stock, during the Vietnam war Halliburton was busy building infrastructure in Vietnam.
Her father owend Brown and Rout contractors they were civilian suppliers, in Vietnam and later became Halliburton .
My grandfather grew up across town from westmoreland In Spartanburg. While westmoreland went to West Point my grandfather fought in the battle of Luzon , the Berlin airlift , & the Korean War with 1st cavalry . My grandfather was with the welcome party at an Khe . He served 3 tours before retiring as a first sergeant with 1st cavalry airmobile division. My grandfather said that westmoreland and his body count tactic was asinine and that it was demoralizing to the enlisted men to go and fight and seize an objective only to pull out at night . The enlisted men , NCO & combat experienced Officers wanted to sweep the territory holding land as they went like was common in warfare . In the end my grandfather died from agent orange poisoning but I will always remember westmoreland as the idiot from the east side of spartanburg SC - a man completely disconnected with the reality of warfare and the experiences of the boots on the ground
I am a history buff. I am also a retired Veteran. That means I have a LOT of time on my hands, and I fill a good bit of it engaging in the process I call "curing my own ignorance." Translated, that means I am 53 years old and I have always had a passion for learning which is still with me. It means I watch a LOT of these kinds of videos to go along with my reading.
With my credibility thus expressed, let me say that these "forgotten history" videos are some of the very best out there in the world today. When they hit on subjects that I already know, I see them hitting the points that most people are more comfortable hiding. That tells me that it is a good idea to listen to them when they are covering those subjects I do not yet know.

As a Norwegian, I can confirm that Norwegian boats with Norwegian crew were hired by CIA to run ops along the coast of North Vietnam during the time period you describe. A shameful event in our common history.

I asked a Vietnam veteran with whom I had worked, in Manhattan in 1979, if he thought that the movie Apocalypse Now was an accurate portrayal of the war. After what seemed to me like a long pause, he answered: "Vietnam was not a war. Johnson called it the Vietnam Crisis. We never declared war on Vietnam. Yah, Apocalypse was a pretty good rendition of Vietnam." The Kennedy and Johnson administrations did not want to declare war because they did not want to hand the management of the conflict over, to the military. Why? Perhaps they were afraid of a 3rd World War escalation, who knows? This was the reason that many people in the military said that they were fighting with one hand tied behind their back. The Air Force had to get permission from Washington before they attacked a target, every single time. The bureaucrats in Washington mismanaged the conflict until it became a protracted Hell for the unfortunate grunts, on the battlefield.

The U.S. has not declared war since WWII , because we can't. As members of the United Nations we cannot declare war against a member nation.
A declaration of War requires a vote of Congress. Truman fired MacArthur over the question of Presidential authority over the military. General "Waste More Land" was in Charge.
That was the same reasoning "Generals havng one hand tied behind their backs." that Hitler used to explain German's defeat in world war one. Yes if only more destruction and death had occurred victory could have been declared and huge parking lot and airstip created for US Military victory parades could have been built. Hitler he too was a war Veteran and blamed Bolsheviks, Jews and the Weimar Republic for tying the hands of the Generals. After he was a corporal caring messages for Generals that became Commander and Chief on a suicide mission that brought Glory to the German People.

Walter Kronkite played a huge role in that after Tet. "The war in Vietnam is lost". The North had just blown everything on Tet, but the American Media blew air into their sales just as they were about to give it up.
The North Vietnamese General Giap said by April 1968 the communism of North Vietnam was about to accept the terms of LBJ administration, when they saw LBJ quitting the presidency, Walter Kronkite, the media treason and the hippie anti war movement, it was a moral booster for the PAVN and the Viet Cong, even if the North Vietnamese Generals was wasting there manpower unnecessary sentened 12 year olds boys, 50 year old men from North Vietnam into combat along with Girls and Women with Chinese soldiers and North Koreans sometimes down in South Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. General Giap told an Italian journalist in February 1969 the War with American and it Allied in the pass four years cost the PAVN/ Viet Cong over 500,000 death, it was a war run by body counts, not territory gain for nothing.
Kronkite did more to lose the war than any media person in history. Add that to the fact that our military had their hands tied behind their back almost all the time by a clueless administration and you have the perfect recipe for failure.
I've read about many of the pilots who were shot down and imprisoned by the North Vietnamese. They were a different breed, men of courage.
Your opening statement re-emphasized what my father said when I was a kid about Johnson's financial interest in the Vietnam war. My dad served in the air National Guard and was told by someone in the upper ranks that the reason why the F-111 was pushed so hard by Macnamara As a fighter/bomber Was because ladybird Johnson owned stock in Rockwell. Perhaps that could be the subject for a future episode.

The North Vietnamese attacked the USS Maddox in International waters, IT IS AN ACT OF WAR. They should have either gotten a declaration of war or pulled all of our advisors out of there. I almost wound up going had a draft card & a report date then I got a letter saying they were stopping the draft, went in a few years later. Worked with quite a few Nam vets one guy was even Korea & Nam. They were all a great group of people and I feel privileged to have worked with them & learned from them. Thanks to all now serving, those who have, and those who will in the future. FLY NAVY!!!
I know the South Vietnamese count the loss of lives in the North as their casualties. This is estimated to be more than a million men and your reference to lives lost omits this count. I have also seen a documentary that placed 40% of US Soldiers lost due to jungle poison snake bits etc. If true placing soldiers in the jungle was atrocious negligence.

Oh man, just started this, I know this is going to be great! One side note, Admiral Morrison, father of Jim Morrison, lead singer for the great Rock group, The Doors, was the commanding officer of the carrier task force in the Gulf of Tonkin during this "event". Also, if you look up Jim Morrison on wikipedia you'll see a picture of a young Jim, and Admiral Morrison on the bridge of an aircraft carrier. Another side note: I've been on two aircraft carriers, and the Captain's chair on both were covered in a luxurious sheep skin. I don't know it that's standard, but one was when I was on active duty in the mid 80's, the USS Enterprise, and the second was the museum ship USS Midway in 2017 on a family vacation.
CORRECTION! At minute 1:09 you state that Johnson had financial interest in Hughs Aircraft and I believe you mean Bell Helicopter as they made the Huey of which we lost over 4,000.

My parents were refugees to Australia in the 1970s. We are Vietnamese Catholic. I was always taught to be suspicious of Communists. This left me feeling quite conflicted, as I'm sure the Vietnam War left many others feeling conflicted. After the pandemic lockdowns were lifted I started traveling to North Vietnam to learn more about it's history. Initially I was intimidated by all the red Communist Vietnamese flags and the red Hammer and Sickle flags. But I learned that the people there just want to live their lives in peace, raise their families and be on friendly terms with everyone. After learning about the Gulf of Tonkin lie and LBJ things started making more sense. I can finally be at peace. Thanks for the great work you do. The truth will set us free 😊

Went on a family heritage tour with a 2nd Cousin in Kentucky a few years back. Some oil wells in this particular area. Was told when WW2 started the Federal Government seized control of them. (Understandable!) But when the War ended, somehow the Johnson family ended up owning them!

As for war conscript was bad idea, tactically Australia army operate AO pretty well which effected some return soldiers when Australia pull out of the war. As return soldiers come home there treat like garbage which was disgusting let lone health problems that continue with lack of help from government. Positive note lessons were learned from Vietnam when Australia went to Afghanistan.

Johnson was invested in Bell Helicopter, not Hughes. Bell was a Texas company.
Hughes won the LOH competition with the OH-6 over Bell's OH4. The OH58, a derivative of the OH-4, was later procured in greater numbers because Johnson was invested in Bell.

These engines powered all of the LOH entries (hiller had an entry as well, the OH-5). It was widely known around the Model 250 product line that Johnson used his corrupt influence to mostly squeeze Hughes out of that business and redirect it to Bell even though they lost the LOH competition. Do a little more research and you will find that to be true. He was not a fan of Howard Hughes and Texas was home to Bell Helicopter in Arlington plus, he was invested in Bell and owed them political favors. Johnson was from Texas. I have actually been in the Bell plant at Arlington as a result of my work on the Model 250 program. I have also been to Bell's facility in Mirabel, Quebec, Canada several times. I was heavily involved in the design and development of the derivative Model 250-C40B (powered the Bell 430), the 250-C47B (powered the Bell 407), the 250-C30R/3 (powered the uprated Bell OH-58D Kiowa Warrior), the 250-C47M (powered the McDonnell Douglas -- formerly Hughes -- MD600), among others. As a result, I learned about the history of these programs from old-timers in the department.

I still say the August 4th incident was caused by whale mating season. The NVA government could have defused this situation by open and honest dialog. They refused to do so due to their arrogance and stupidity. The NVA wanted a war and they got. The cause of of the Vietnam war was the NVA government, the Americans had very little to do with this. The Soviets had a hard time working with the NVA, and glad to have others deal with the NVA.
I would suggest another motive for Johnson expanding the war in Vietnam. At the time, it really wasn't considered a war in the US. Now with the supposed attack on US warships by apparent North Vietnamese, it effectively became a war, and Johnson became a war time president. It was an election year, and Johnson had not been elected to office at this time.

It's a sad and disgusting thing when our government sends our men and women to die or be permanently damaged merely for a politician's financial interest. WWI was another great example of that. Generations lost for buisness interests and imperialist narcissism.
Have you heard of the book "This time we win: revisiting the Tet offensive" by James S. Robbins? In it the author describes LBJ as not being interested in a winning strategy. I guess that explains the money. The longer the conflict dragged out the more money it earns.

I would say that the war spilled over to neighbouring Cambodia is a bit of understatement considering it is the most heavily bombed country in history with about ~2.8 million tons of bombs dropped. To put 2,756,941 tons into perspective, the Allies dropped just over 2 million tons of bombs during all of World War II. Please refer to the Walrus "Bombs Over Cambodia" paper for the figure that was declassified later not the - still huge - 500 million figure. Also that does not include Laos, both of which did nothing just like Vietnam.
Some years back, I watched a documentary on LBJ that was brutally honest. I wish I could remember the name of it. What stood out was it said that Johnson thought the public was stupid. He said it of his own supporters, the people who voted for him. He'd leave a campaign speech where they cheered for him, and he'd privately call them idiots to his aides. This was a regular occurrence.
A lingering question for me is why he didn't run for a second term, like every other president before him. The story we're told is that his popularity was in the tank. So, he threw in the towel. However, I heard a different story recently that it actually had to do with his wife, Lady Bird. She wanted to get out of Washington, something like that.
I pray To God Trump gets his due second term! Should get a third for all the false accusations!

To understand Vietnam, one should research back to wwii.
Ho Chi Minh and his followers worked with OSS in combating Japan. At the conclusion of the Japanese war, these pre- CIA warriors supported Ho's natioalist/Marxist faction. for governance.

However, France wanted its colony in Vietnam restored and the Vatican shared this policy. Many Vietnames were Catholics and the Church was invested in Vietnam. US policy favored the French and ultimately Civil War broke out. The Eisenhour administration through Foster Dulles were anti communist and supported France. In 1954 the French suffered a crushing defeat at Diem Bien Phu and it caused France to lose interest in the war as the country was domestically divided.
Subsequently, there was an International Conference on Vietnam, which called for elections to decide Vietnam's future. The elections were never held, as the US knew the communists would win the election. Frances role diminished after their crushing loss in 1954 and the US substituted for the French.
Vietnam was divided at the 17th parallel and the Viet. Cong became an increased hostile revolutionary force in the south. The US supplanted the French and became the primary provider of support for the South. A bloody Civil conflict began in the south armed by North Vietnam. US advisers began to play a dominant role in as advisers. advisers. The Catholic minority controlled the country in the South. The communist Insurrection was bloody and violent. There were also Vietnamese nationalists opposed to the govt. in the south. The conflict simmered through the early 1960s.
President Kennedy had specific plans to withdraw our people from the south. After Kennedy's assassination, Lyndon Johnson voided Kennedys national security directives.

Communist China acquired nuclear weapons in 1965. The US currently has friendly relations with Vietnam an access to its harbors. Vietnam has historically been an opponent of China. Chinese ambitions in the south China Sea are opposed by both the US and Vietnam.

It started during 1889-1954 US businesses & govt consuls in Viet Nam, empire enabled by French invasion. Thousands of consul reports in US Natl Archives are undeniable. In 1954 after France was defeated, US leaders attacked to continue the business. 1st cite: United States Consulate (1957). Despatches from United States consuls in Saigon, 1889-1906. Washington: National Archives and Records Service, General Services Administration, Reel 1.
