Timo throws me still in the sandpaper department. I definitely believe end of the season Timo is the real Timo. Playoff Timo against the Rangers showed some sandpaper.

He brings an element that NO OTHER forward does. He can be a physical bull and finish beautifully. He had one of the goals of the season last year with blowing up 2 guys, kicking the puck to his stick, and beautifully finishing with one hand. It was a thing of absolute beauty!

Memory is foggy, but there was a game last year that Jack had 4 points I think, but the highlight of the game for me was an assist by Timo. He picked up the puck in the d zone, skated up ice with pace and drove deep on the right wing (Right wing is key here... this was when he was still playing on the left side but drove to the right; where he belongs). He pulled the d down to the goal line, and the defensive wingers below the top of the circle. Left the high slot wide open where he found someone (don't recall who) who ended up burying it. At the time I said no other current forward on the Devils could make that play.

First time really watching through and you were spot on! I’m 46 and remember all the cups devils won.All had that toughness we are lacking. The crash line was such a beast of line. Loved those guys

I've mentioned this before: my favorite guy in the 90s, easily, was Claude Lemieux. I loved that everyone absolutely detested that guy. And that he actually didn't fight, which made them hate him more lmao. 95 Conn Smythe and well deserved. We're a speed and skill team now, but it is definitely good to hear Fitz talk about getting "more violent" lol. We do need some more grit and toughness. To me, it started with the Carolina playoff series. I remember Hischier taking a monster hit from Kotkaniemi and looking surprised. And Ryan Graves also took a huge hit, looked equally surprised. I'm guessing teams all saw that and that was their scouting report going into this past year. I'm hoping it's already not as big a deficiency as it was. Like you said having McDermid woke them up a little bit, and it had a bit of a domino effect as far as morale. Getting Brady would solve the problem. If not Brady then def one or two more forwards who can skate and play with some sandpaper. I don't know other teams rosters well enough to know who else might fit.
@bted Claude Lemieux is one of my favorite players as well. How could you not love that guy?!? He was a complete MENACE, and was a killer in the playoffs. He was a big piece when he came back in 2000 and won another Cup with us. The scouting report for the Devils was definitely to beat on them and make it nasty, they will wilt. There are some guys in Free Agency that I think could fill the void. Bertuzzi and Duclair are two that immediately come to mind...

I know we have to add some sandpaper guys in the top-9, and on D, but I wouldn't be against trying a Foote-Lazar-Stlllman 4th line, as long as Foote was healthy and Stillman looked like he actually belonged as a fourth line player. I think that could be a great sandpaper line.
@MrZeek1519 I like it. If that line actually was a serviceable 4th line, we should have some $ to grab a nice top 9 player or 2. Lazar is one of my favorite players on the roster. I have not heard much about Stillman. I was super pumped about him after he knocked 2 guys out of the game on the same shift in juniors! Leveled one with a devastating check....then a teammate of the guy he decked came and wanted to drop the gloves, Stillman beat the wheels off him. Both guys go down the tunnel. It was such an amazing sequence!
I’d like us to go for Reinhart, Marchessault, Stamkos, Bertuzzi Tyson Barrie, Jack Roslovic, Tyler Johnson, Tyler Myers, Brady Skeji, Zadorov, Matt Dumba. Fitz should go for 3/4 guys on this list if we’re making 5 big moves and have already made 1, these are guys that would help New Jersey come Playoff time.

Snipers, grit, are needed on every line. I would be fine trading Jonas Siegenthaler. There are many blue liners out in free agency with grit, shot blocking. We really need to reinvent our defensive pairings. We have too many John Marinos on the blue line.
Agree that a successful teams needs a balance of skill and grit. But I agree with the building approach taken so far. It's harder to find skill so in general I agree with locking them up long term which have been done. Grit is easier to find/replace and therefore there are held on smaller contracts. And when the team has success, we don't necessarily give them pay raises and let them go because there's always options. ..... Speaking of violence..... Imagine Trouba as a devil, jk 😅
I’ve got faith that Fitzy will get it done this summer. He’s stepped up to acquire Keefe and Markstrom, I can’t see him talking a big game to the media and not following it up. I think players around the league are seeing NJ are poised to be a heavy contender in the coming seasons and will want to be a part of that. My summer wish list is Bertuzzi, Tanev and Zadorov which can all be acquired through free agency. That still leaves the number 10 pick in play also. Some combination of Number 10, Casey, Palat, Seigs, Marino or another pick or prospect to Ottawa for Brady Tkachuk. At this point if it took moving Mercer in a deal to land Tkachuk I’d say pull the trigger assuming we add some of the above mentioned free agents. It’s going to be an exciting coming month for the franchise and let’s see what Fitz can pull off.

The real failure of analytics is that it never factors the dreaded "grit" into its equations. Momentum and toughness can not be quantified in a formula. Players like Claude Lemuiex weren't goons, but they brought physicality necessary for high levels of competition.
