  • Hi all!
A little bit of a different video today - wanted to explore the sounds of the two basses that I play regularly and review a few pedals that were kindly sent to me by Monk Custom (www.monkcustom.com/). I have literally NEVER used pedals before so this is a new first for me....so don't hold back if you you have suggestions for me and/or want to tell me I'm doing it all wrong!
Also let me know about your thoughts on a giveaway of one of these pedals, may sneak one in if I ever hit 100k subs as a gesture of appreciation for your support and a thank you to you all!
A bit more detail regarding my thoughts on the basses and pedals:
Sterling by Music Man Ray 34 - this bass comes with a bite. You can hear it in all of the clips in this video i.e. the signature Ernie Ball sound. The default action of the strings is very low, and even after adjustment (made it slightly higher) sometimes there's still a little of that fret buzz going on but at the same time...it makes this bass a dream to play. It's by far my favourite bass to slap and pop on. I'd say it's got a great mid frequency sound quality to it and is good for general funky songs/covers but may not work as favourably when recording mellow stuff.
Fender Flea Signature Active Jazz Bass - my favourite bass to play live becomes it has a sound that just BOOMS across the floor. It's got a really bassy sound but maintains punchiness with a good mix of treble. I love the sound quality and its perfect for when I want to play super tight groovy vulfpecky kind of stuff imo. Only down side is it's harder to slap and pop on compared to my sterling and the action is slightly higher - but it's because of this that every note seems to stand on its own and its great for fast punchy riffs.
Melvin Lee Davis Bass Preamp and DI - the pedal gave me a chance to finally kind of understand/play around with EQ settings instead of taking the default settings of garage band. I can see how it can be useful in situations where you're playing different types of songs during the same gig and want a different sound quality to your bass!
Komp Core Deluxe compressor - easy to use, and it does the job as a compressor! Useful I can imagine if I'm playing a song mixed with slap/pop and finger style.
Masamune booster and kompressor pedal - more versatile than the above compressor because of the boost, which is...good for...bass solos? (LOL). But regardless, it's nice to have options when live!
