I traded a KIA Soul which was a decent run about for a 2020 VW Tiguan. The difference was drastic. Having a vehicle that doesn’t whine or doesn’t feel unsafe at speeds of 45 was refreshing. The handling on road trips from Pensacola Fl to San Diego Ca were smooth and comfortable. Winter driving from Seattle to eastern Pennsylvania in snow and ice across I-80 felt confident and sure footed the entire time even when “driving by braille” when the snow was falling heavier and faster than it could be cleared (just to get to a safe sit-out-the-weather spot). For what my Tiguan’s price I’m impressed with the handling and versatility. I know that I do not have a European performance tourer. I do have braking that has proven more that adequate when in a variety of near hard braking events. Out of conditioning as a commercial driver I still avoid passing unless it can be done with economy in mind, partly due to having an insurance linked driving recorder, how I drive the acceleration is again adequate for my needs. As far as reliability my Tiguan has not given me one problem during my road trips in the lower 48 states (there’s 4 that I haven’t explored yet) from +110f desert no pavement driving to really bad idea -25f blizzard driving I haven’t found an environment that “he” couldn’t best while seemingly eager for more. I have changed my oil and oil filter every 6,500km, breather filter every month and use mid-grade fuel from fuel chains that I trust and I’ve had tires replaced 5 times now. So far no crazy unexpected costs. I would recommend the Tiguan for people who like to feel safe and also might get a wild hair and take a road trip or just around town where cargo and passengers are handily swallowed up. Those seeking spirited sport driving or the need for flashy will find the Tiguan woefully disappointing though.
I test drove the CRV and the RAV4. Tiguan definitely has a better smoother ride and quieter cabin than both. I ended up getting a 2019 Tiguan which comes with the long warranty, the 2020 doesn’t.
A RUclips Channel with no name how? That always depends on the model, your needs and so on and so forth. Honda better suited my needs and toyota is better for others. Reliability is about the same.
In the cargo area VW gives you a light, a 12 volt power source and a little fold out hook great for holding your grocery bags. And that model has a cargo cover that’s stored under the floor and removable to install to cover your cargo.
We have a 2019 SEL Premium R-Line w/4motion and a 2018 Audi Premium Plus A4. We find ourselves choosing the Tiguan for our weekend driving. Excellent riding vehicle.
I had a Honda CRV 5 speed auto diesel for 5 years and it was a brilliant car and other than normal servicing it never went wrong, it had 115,000 miles on it and still drove like new. I have just bought a 190bhp Tiguan diesel auto with a 7 speed DSG gearbox and it is far quicker than the Honda, but I don't get the feel of the quality that the Honda had and wonder if it will still be as good after 100,000 miles.
The 3rd seat is vest reserved for children but I’d like to add that the second seat slides forward 8” and that helps tremendously. I use mine a lot on my 2019. I like that the second row has a 40/20/40 split on all models.
My problem with the Tiguan is that they updated the trim levels with 2020 and that removed the sel premium without the r line package. Now you can get the sel for about the same price that the sel premium was hovering around with dealer incentives with less features. I was going to get this but after they did that and lowered the value for the price, it took this car out the running. (correct me if I'm wrong about any of this, I just noticed that when I went to look at the 2020 models on the VW website)
Their marketing is pathetic, but I promise you that the R-line is well-worth the price, especially in pure white paint. Only if you care about the exterior, of course.
My 2019 atlas seats are horrible. This plus fuel economy are the reasons I’m going to rate it in. Prevented me from buying the Tiguan as well because of the horrible seats.
I have the 2018 4 motions se with cloth seats. I would only recommend buying this vehicle if you get the premium interior. The cloth seats stain easily and the interior feels cheap and plain. Definitely consider other competitors at the price point.
Wireless charging is not standard in Canada. I won’t ever use it anyways but it would cost more for that and I got the 2020 high line which is the highest trim line
As this car ages, simple maintenance becomes quite expensive. You'd think you're nurturing an uber luxury car. I love the conservative design, ride and performance but future maintenance scares me.
The new Tiguan is much more reliable than older models, we have MK2 Tiguan since 2016 in Europe and they are doing well. VW fixed most of their older issues.
Great Review!!! Here are my gripes: cheap looking headlamps, sunroof cover doesn’t fully block sun when closed, rear end does not have separate amber turn signals...JMHO
I owned a 2019 Tiguan for 3 months and the space inside doesn’t compare to a CR-V. The Tiguan feels cramped in the middle row. It should have never had a 3rd row as its useless and takes up valuable cargo space. I replaced it with a 19 CR-V and haven’t looked back at the VW
And in addition, Mason, I’m glad you’re adding some honesty to your review about the rear seat comfort. Is that a CD player or the mapping for the navigation in the glove box?
Not sure if these brothers mentioned that VW is including 5 years of no cost VW Car Net which has some really useful benefits. I believe remote start is one of them.

Lucien L not true at all. The new RAV4 comes standard with LEDs and the CRV at least comes standard with projector halogens. This is absolutely pathetic looking.
I own one and the headlights aren’t an issue for every long. They melt the snow fast! Work great! And the Tiguan is excellent! No regrets on my 2019!! I highly recommend
Lucien L wrong wrong wrong. You must be 16 years old. What kind of light do you thing vehicles have used for the last 30 years? LED is really new because most cars haven’t adopted them yet unless they are luxury cars. Halogen where all there was in mainstream cars. The Xenons and others were on higher end but the fact that halogens are still used by most manufacturers in 2020 tells you the lights are proven and worked for longer than you’ve been alive. We have better technology now but it’s taking years for LED to be ubiquitous in automobiles.
Being built to ever tighter budgets huh? The 2019 R looks much better. The Golf R wagon is the go these says. If only the DSG had better software and they had a proper high performance variant.
And I purchased two GTI's over the last decade. The first, the last of the MK6 generation was flawless for 80,000 miles, 40K of which were after a stage I tune. The second, a MK7.5 model I've owned for two years and 25k miles without a single issue. Not one. The fact is that the vast majority of new car buyers of any brand can expect to experience few issues of any kind and no major issues over a 100K miles or more.

Gus Morales it’s a nice looking vehicle, but it is painfully slow. Pretty sure cloth staining is 100% due to user error
The fact that they lowered their warranty mileage sounds like they think their car is not reliable and they want to cash in on repairs.
And cash in on the separate warranty they sell
