At first, I was concerned that the birds would disappear. But apparently Resolve knows the difference between small objects like that and the real sky. Good job Davinci!
Thanks for covering this so quickly. I just woke up and noticed your video here, having gone to bed still waiting for the update to download. It does look like a very well thought out feature. I would assume the magic mask would be the best option for cloudy skies with no colour.
im commenting even before watching this... i was so eager to find any video of new sky replacement FX and I was so totally wishing if it was from your channel ... Bammm ... here it is already.... happiest day... Thanks again Darren😄
This has been a life saver (almost) for my drone footage. Problem I have Darren is some of my foreground subjects are pretty much identical in luminance to the sky and I end up with artefacts of the sky in those places, I tried a power window and tracked it but I am flying through a metal tunnel with the sky at the end. I hope there is a work around this will be really help my footage going forward.
Fantastic display of this new tool's capabilities, def helped me get started! Especially appreciate the different node types and key adjustment options you laid out!
Great video. Using first option. I can see the sky, I adjust it, then track foreground, but then when I play the clip back the sky disappears after a frame or two. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?
It’s interesting that I just went through your video on sky replacement two weeks ago and it worked perfect but to do it with having to find a picture is amazing. Thank you for the demo.
Really cool feature! Maybe comping the foreground on top with a layer mixer is better because then you can add some grain and light wrap to it aswell to make it fit the footage better. Amazing that it has various trackers built in!
@@DarrenMostyn that's true aswell, but I was actually talking about mixing a blurred image of the sky on top of only the foreground (aka light wrap or glow) to blend in more realisticly. also adding grain to only the sky to match the footage.
Best of ....." that's not really going to come into my sky too much" 😂🤣🤣🤣 Darren I love your tutorials and humour this one it will be supper handy soon, BTW the most used shortcut for me is SHIFT F Laptop Mode Thanks for share 💯
Excellent instruction video but I tried this sky replacement and it seems to be only suitable for specific settings, such as the example in the video. I wanted to replace a white grey sky (mostly burned out of information) with a white grey sky and a hint of blue with clouds to make it more interesting. But the end result looked very artificial and pretty much impossible to match it to the landscape.
I have subscribed for newsletters but I still can't find the link where I can download the same video shot to learn along with you. Can you please navigate me Darren ? Really great job I love your videos !
This looks great. At what point as a colourist do these sort of things get sent to a retouch artist? Just when you start to feel a bit out of your depth?
I shall give it a go 😀 However, I have just discovered the joy of Dehaze and what it can do to my sunset skies. It's like performing magic on my projects. May I pick your brains about something that was mentioned in a separate discussion on another channel about Middle Grey or 18% grey. Do you try your best to increase or decrease exposure to get close to this number on the waveform and grade with this target in mind? In my personal voyage of grading, I have been trying to keep skin tones in the same ballpark on the waveform when adjusting exposure. Simply because it's the only constant that I can visually recognise. Is this the same sort of principle/idea as preserving middle grey?
Have you run into any issues with colour management when using this? I find if I'm working in DWG then a CST downstream of the FX going from DWG to Rec709 will ruin the sky. As the sky is coming in through an effect rather than the timeline there is no way to colour manage it properly. Need to completely rethink my colour management workflow to make this work. Cheers
Yeah, this is where the AI could have been used. tracking to a foreground object doesn't seem to make sense except for a static shot, but what if not enough texture in Sky to track
18.1 has a lot of bugs in it right now. I can't render any of my projects. But I look forward to using this when I can get it up and running again! Make sure everyone backs up your database.
I'm not sure if it's possible, but being able to use the gyro data to track the sky would seem to be very useful - basically give it 360 plate, mapped to the inside of a sphere. I'm thinking more of scenes with fast motion - you've already got the rotation data (on certain cameras at least) and the sky is far enough away for position not to be a factor?
Darren How can you use track foreground when using a drone flypath than moves forward and panning. Seems that the sky replacement is cut and part of the sky is showing black. Any thoughts?
I tried exporting an alpha matte from DR to use as a track matte in after effects, but neither Premiere or After effects could read the exported clip. I tried all of the alpha-supported file formats. Only Davinci Resolve Studio was able to read the file. Is this a limitation of DR or a bug? It's so much faster and easier to make a selection with the new magic mask in DR, so would be insanely time efficient to be able to use the alpha mattes from DR.
Super-impressive feature that would fix my camcorder's auto contrast feature that tends to wash out the sky until it adjusts. I think it may be time to upgrade to the Studio version to get Magic Mask to make this a lot easier. Thanks Darren for the easy to follow tutorial.
Depends how important is this to you. I think this tool is pretty much amateru-hour tool, it doesn't edge wrap, it doesn't do edge light bleed, cloud generation is faux as hell. The best bet is to use the key generated and import it in Fusion tab, do edge wrap macro from Reactor plugin and introduce some natural sky yourself.
Can you believe this is just a mi or upgrade by DaVinci Resolve. Lucky I have a stack of skies I use for photo editing. Happy days. The sky’s the limit. Ho Ho Ho.
Very interesting feature! Is it possible to use images as sky replacement? Kinda like photoshop cloud replacement where you can get these really awesome looking cloud paterns in a few clicks
Thanks for another great tutorial. Is it possible to add some parallax effect to the sky, so it moves more slowly than the foreground, or does it have to be stuck to it?
There is a problem, when I got the update, the entire DaVinci Resolve window is zoomed in to close, and I don’t know how to zoom it out. I don’t want to go into windows Settings and Zoom my entire computer out because I just want to zoom out the DaVinci Resolve application. How do you fix this?
Cool feature. I followed your exact instructions but for some reason my sky doesn't animate or even appear beyond the frame I created it in. In other words, it doesn't stay on throughout the clip. It's just on for that one frame. Is there a trick to animating it for the whole clip?
New Resolve features, plus TWO Darren Mostyn videos (check out the audio tools vid, people), telling me how to use them. I'm looking forward to a fun weekend.
Even better than that - i provide the actual clip for FREE if you click the link in the description. Then you can analyse it perfectly in full quality outside of RUclips.
I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to use my own sky (one that I photographed) in sky replacement! I know you said you would get around to it...but yikes!
NOTE - You can also add your own SKY from images - you don't have to create the Sky.
how do you do this?
Could you go into detail on that. I would enjoy using my own time-lapse.
At first, I was concerned that the birds would disappear. But apparently Resolve knows the difference between small objects like that and the real sky. Good job Davinci!

Wow, this is a great new feature! Thanks for showing us Darren!
No problem!
This is a fantastic demonstration Darren, thank you for making this video so quickly. Very very helpful.
You are very welcome

Thats so good to hear...Thank you my friend. Thats about as good a compliment as I could ever wish for. Thanks Sagar.
Another powerful feature. Fantastic. Thank you BM team, and thank you Darren for explaining!
Thanks Darren these little snippets are great to see what is possible and added to my memory bank
its an old video now but hope it helps!!
This is briliant! They did such a great job adding this new feature. Thank you Darren to showing this🙌
woah nice to see you've leveled up your transitions and edits for youtube!

I'm so excited to use this. Nice work making this video so quickly!
Thanks Darren. Tried it out today on both images and video and it works like a charm 👍😊
Absolutely to the point! For learning purposes I've slowed down to 0.75 😂
Perfect!
So good! You are so fun to watch. When is your Master Class launching. HAHA
Excellent tutorial as always!!!
Glad you liked it!
Amazing explanation Darren like always 🙏🏻🙏🏻thank you 🙌🏾
Fantastic display of this new tool's capabilities, def helped me get started! Especially appreciate the different node types and key adjustment options you laid out!
This is brilliant - thank you for the overview Darren! The built in tracker is particularly useful on drone shots!
glad it helped

I agree. the sky is very realistic, also if you blend with original it is amazing.
When does your course come out? (I hope you have one coming)... so helpful every time. Thank you.

Thank you for this great tutorial. It worked beautifully!
Pleased to hear it Anthony.
What a great tool to add fun back into the process.
WOW! As always your videos are amazing. Thank you! 😃😃
Glad you like them! Appreciate it Marc
Excellent, this really helped me down.
Thank you for short video that's full of information
Glad it was helpful!
Amazing new feature and a great overview by you!
Thank you, appreciated

Hi Sven, absolutely. Mixing back to original a little is easy to do.

Glad you enjoy them....yes it did look a bot 'shocking' when i switched that on!! :))
The same must work with any background right?
excellent job! always wonder how difficult this would be :)
Wow this is really great, gonna test that as soon as I'm done with my current client project :D
Really cool tutorial!!!! 😎😎😎

It's going to take a while for me to be able to replicate your demo. Pretty rapid for a beginner, but concise, which I like.
Thanks Darren!

Brilliant as usual 🍷

At every point that I can as gives me more Time to grade - reality is very different...I'll fix a lot usually. Good Question, Thanks.

Yeah, this is where the AI could have been used. tracking to a foreground object doesn't seem to make sense except for a static shot, but what if not enough texture in Sky to track

Im on a second machine for 18.1. They'll fix the bugs! The team are very quick.
Is one of the new features that it constantly crashes? Loving that one
well I've been on DaVinci Resolve for 13 years. Promise you that if this new release crashes the team at BMD will fix it asap!
That’s so weird I was doing an edit on Brighton for work yesterday and saw this stock clip haha then I see this vid and you’re using it haha

Enjoy using it Andrew. Its a good
it would be nice if you could do that with some more difficult skys/foreground.
You can. Always depends on the image though so check whole scene before committing.
Good one!
Thank you! Cheers!
Very interesting feature! Is it possible to use images as sky replacement? Kinda like photoshop cloud replacement where you can get these really awesome looking cloud paterns in a few clicks
yes it is.
sir can i use this technique with different sky in color management environment?
yes.
Thanks for another great tutorial. Is it possible to add some parallax effect to the sky, so it moves more slowly than the foreground, or does it have to be stuck to it?
Not with this tool however you could add keyframes.
Haven't tried yet but you can use the original paralax from the tracked original sky or you could add keyframes for the position
Ooooo, now that's a fun new toy.... feature, I mean feature.
Fun toy indeed!
Very Nice
Is there a way to simulate an ND filter effect in Resolve?
How do you add the FXnode?
nice job

Hey! I'm having this exact issue, did you ever find a solution?
@DarrenMostyn.. That's so sweet of you.
@@willraee its not me - its a scam
I don’t have this result at all. When i turn the sky opacity up, it turns like rainbow colors. Footage is from Alexa mini LF, prores
I am surprised this is the first time that I see a Sky replacement tool that is used, nobody would have shown it
nice vdo
Why does my qualifer doesn’t change anything on the screen?
Great video but you didn't tell us how to bring in our own sky to use for replacement?
No This was short one as 18.1 new feature - I'l elaborate in due course or watch the BMD offical they show you how.
New Resolve features, plus TWO Darren Mostyn videos (check out the audio tools vid, people), telling me how to use them. I'm looking forward to a fun weekend.
Not really related, but with 18.0 i had 3 screens at the Bottom Just like yours, with 18.1 only 2, really annoying. Anyone knows how to adapt this?
OMG that's huuuuuuuuuge
Im in davinci 18 studio and i can’t find the sky replacement tab in the FX
You have to update to 18.1!
I want to replace a sky during sunset in Venice beach. There are simply no videos on how to do this.
Can anyone do it?
Venice Beach specifically ? Usually stunning sky - what are you changing it to?
trying to downloads the sky-replacement footage and cannot find the link!!?

You won't believe it Darren but this is also available for the FREE VERSION 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
Where do I download this update?
From Blackmagic website!
It would have been nice to play the clip to see how good it worked
Even better than that - i provide the actual clip for FREE if you click the link in the description. Then you can analyse it perfectly in full quality outside of RUclips.
Bummer I thought this new effect would automatically key the sky with the neural engine. This really doesn't help speed up much for me.
Are you using the free version or studio?
studio
@@DarrenMostyn I forgot to ask if it is only in the studio version.

Watch the Blackmagic 18.1 release Sky section...they do it in there. Hope that helps. Not easy to explain in comments.
I was expecting you to toggle that Sky Replacement slider on and off at the end to show the before and after... Good tutorial though.
download the clip for free if you sign up to my email list in the decsription.
Now if only they’d bring the remix feature to easily lengthen shorten your background music tracks like Premiere Pro does it 😭
strong feature admittedly! And the voice transcribe.
oh
my
god
Hey dude the sky is doing his best 😟
Fair point!!
Seems to me that super-imposing a sky layer below is actually way less work than this
The point of this is what to do if you dont have a replacement sky.
It’s because the all the shades of orange & purple etc. I can’t make
It look
Real….
I need more RAM!! lol
Always need more!!
I love your tutorial except it sounds like you are talking to your self more audience, why? you tutorial is very fast!
Sorry for that - please advise what to do?
confused. you did not spend enough time on the most importatn part..selecting the sky..telling the effin program to pick the sky
its basic keying principles.
terribly fast speaking. dont swallow your tongue.
Thats how I speak - use the speed function in youtube to slow me down - don't make me change how I speak!
