Summer Tanager Singing Softly

  • When this video was captured (4/3/23), male Summer Tanagers had arrived from migration within just the last few days. Females will begin to arrive a bit later. Some of those I observed that morning were likely just passing through on their way to their preferred breeding grounds.
    But every year several pairs nest on SRWMD's Owens Spring Tract in Lafayette County, FL. This bird was calling and singing rather softly. Another was nearby, you'll hear it in the background, and I suspect the birds were in fact counter-singing.
    Also in the background you will hear American Crow and Bachman's Sparrow (a bird with seriously declining populations - we're fortunate they breed on this site!)
