A Brief History of Coups in Thailand

  • Will Thailand ever break free of the coup cycle and become a real democracy?
As protestors in Bangkok have yet again taken to the streets to demand political reform, and neighboring Myanmar is suffering through the violent aftermath of its recent coup, we thought it would be worthwhile to look back at Thailand's history of political upheaval to understand how we got here.
Unsurprisingly, reports of many of the events depicted in the video are conflicting. Historians have their political agendas, and there are the usual inconsistencies you'd expect between Thai and English-language sources. But we did our best to sift through the records to bring you a (mostly) objective recounting of the facts.
What can the Thai people, and government, do to avoid what we're currently seeing in Myanmar and what has been seen here too many times in the past? Let us know what you think in the comments ↓ ↓ ↓ (But, make sure to keep it legal.)
At BKK Edition, we explore Bangkok beneath the surface with insights into Thai culture from an irreverent angle. Visit bkkedition.com to learn more.

The first few coups took place because of the seizure of power among the members of Khana Ratsadon (People's party). The last two coups took place to stop the civil war in the country. Actually, Thai people owe the military for the mess they made. The problem with the Thai political system is that since Khana Ratsadon seized the power from the king, they wrote the constitution to prevent the king to balance their power. This makes the politicians nowadays do not fear to be punished and feel they were at the apex of the country. That's why most Thai politicians never hersiate to corrupt their country because people cannot get rid of them easily. The lack of the balance from the king power (like in UK and other European countries) is the missing link, thus, the military coup has been created for power balancing.

Thailand with so many coup is still better economically than Indonesia, who only has 2 coups in 100yrs. We need more coup in Indonesia..
Testimony that chg & conflict can go hand in hand..
Compare to our coup, Thai's are relative bloodless. Our coup in 60s 300k to 3million may hv died. The last coup in 98, 1500 killed & 500 were burnt to death..

But Indonesia is less than 100 years old
And why would you need more coup in Indonesia?
You already say Thai have relatively bloodless coup than Indonesia
Just think if we have many coup like Thailand, how much do you think that will die? How heartless of you
