Just a tip Coming from someone who has welded a lot of socket weld hydraulic pipe. Grind your stop and start on the first weld ; that way you grind out any porosity or slag from the original start and the weld bonds good where it overlaps.

You started out in a shop environment (enclosed) with doing a socket weld. Why did you choose to stick the socket? then you came outside in to the elements and then chose to weld tig? Always do a 2 pass minimum on socket welds. Make it a routine. Stay with it. 👍🏻
Always, always root pass a pressure containment weld! Always!
On the sides on 2 in socket. You should be able to measure back of flange to socket on each side for square instead of eye balling square on it

I have an opportunity to go work in a ship yard. The test is an restricted 6" from the ceiling, 6" from the wall in 6g. Pipe is copper nickel to stainless 1/2 sch 10. Never heard of this. Are you familiar with this one? I would think real low purge, no bevel no gap and about 45 amps. Any tips?

I knew I misunderstood him. He was also talking about 1/2 socket weld test. The restricted test is 2" sch 10 pipe. Copper nickel to carbon and also a stainless both 6g. But the people that are telling me about the test aren't welders.

South coast, supreme and Tulsa if you’re in Houston.
Mainliners welding academy is where it’s at they have 2 shops one in La Porte and one in Texas city. Y’all should go check them out
