      As far as I know, IMAX also has distribution rights for the IMAX footage that the studios make and that's why they didn't have it anywhere else before this. (Not a 100% sure, I read this on Reddit.)

      Reddit can have some good info…and some bad info.
      IMAX does not hold the rights to the footage. Marvel does (and subsequently Disney). IMAX is but a tool in all of this. It’s only their equipment, they’re not creating anything.

    Some updates or clarifications:
    1) The DTS:X mix is not available YET on Disney+. However, DTS and Disney plan to have DTS:X available to stream within the next 6 months.
    2) I misspoke in the video when I said Infinity War and Endgame were the only two movies shot entirely in IMAX digital. Shang Chi and The Suicide Squad were also shot entirely in IMAX digital.
    3) If you stream from an Apple TV device you will not be getting the DTS audio mix regardless. Apple does not pay for the license fee for DTS. Behind the scenes, many of the audio technicians and engineers at Apple previously worked at Dolby Labs and of course they don't want their former competition streaming from their device if it can be helped.

    It's too bad we aren't getting the IMAX Enhanced audio over Disney+ even on devices like the Nvidia Shield which can pass through DTS. Yes, as you know, Apple TV does not support DTS (unfortunately). I asked Brian why (the interviewee from this video). He said Apple just doesn't want to pay the licensing fee. DTS wants Apple, but Apple doesn't want DTS. It's a pain for me to because I love my Apple TV device.
      I got my facts mixed up, but there's no way to edit the video after it's gone up. DTS:X mixes for these movies have already been done (according to my source), BUT they are not just yet available on Disney+. However, Disney does plan on putting the DTS:X mixes on Disney+ in the near future. So even when the DTS mix is available on Disney+ you still won't be able to hear it on Apple.

      @@MovieUniversity Hey thanks for the info! I think it will be a good thing when the sound part gets to Disney+.
      I wonder which devices other than the Shield will support DTS-X on Disney Plus.
      On the Daily Hifi Podcast, we recently talked a bit about the need for BEQ (bass EQ) on many movies mixed for home viewing as they remove a lot of the low-frequency bass. IMAX Enhanced should fix that issue.

    • @MovieUniversity
      @MovieUniversity  2 года назад +2

      One of my sources tells me DTS:X will roll out on Disney+ within the next 6 months. Behind the scenes there was a desire by Marvel to rush out the expanded aspect ratio since Marvel and IMAX have had a close relationship for years now. However, for the sound parts of things it actually apparently is a lot more labor intensive to roll that out onto a big streaming service like Disney+.

    What about bitrate? We watched the IMAX Enhanced version of "Doctor Strange" on Disney+ this past weekend, and I swear the picture seemed to have a bit more detail than the standard Widescreen version, which I chalked up to maybe having less compression or higher bitrate. So I was surprised to not hear that come up in this video. Maybe placebo effect?

    • @MovieUniversity
      @MovieUniversity  2 года назад +7

      Definitely the placebo effect. This is not uncommon. A lot of people will also say the DTS-MA sound track will sound better than the Dolby True HD mix but they're both lossless sound tracks and the file sizes is the same, it's just the prestige of DTS makes people think it sounds better in that instance.
      Bitrates are the same for both formats on Disney+. A reddit user took screenshots of this recently. www.reddit.com/r/DisneyPlus/comments/qry03u/bitrate_of_imax_enhanced_movies/
      What might have happened is the internet connection where you live. Depending on where you live and the time you're streaming something there might have been less bandwidth for the regular version to buffer. Happens a lot to people living in apartments or in the suburbs.

      It is superior because it is a unique master, with Imax colour grading.
      The visual differences from the mass-theatrical versions aren't *just* the aspect ratio.
      It's really obvious in Civil War, where the detail in the airport scene is incredibly pronounced, compared to the footage in the rest of the film.

  • @armpauloferreira
    @armpauloferreira 2 года назад +7

    For me it has other perspective. Movies are really awesome in cinema with an 2,35:1 aspect ratio and when something is made just 16:9 it looks not very cinematic. Nowadays we live in a streaming era, which is something even more serious than just watch tv channels. So in a streaming service a movie made in pure 16:9 aspect ratio does not look so cinematic but 2,35:1 is starting to feel too much wide for all rigid 16:9 home screens. If TV has to evolve 18:9 would be a way (and not so far wide from everything) In my opinion, for streaming 2,0:1 would have been the best of both worlds but then it does not come as a standard branded like the prestige of IMAX.
    For me IMAX enhanced is just a clever new way to standardize a proper aspect ratio for streaming services which is 1,9:1 (one that still looks cinematic and fills much more a home screen) and clearly supported by cinemas too.
    I hope that Disney + and more streaming services bring this aspect ratio to their offer. Looks great!

    Basically, It's all a marketing scheme where IMAX reserves exclusive rights to the fullest content that can fit in standard 16:9 format that studios distribute in order to inflate costs for consumers for a more exclusive experience.

    • @MovieUniversity
      @MovieUniversity  2 года назад

      Marketing, yes. Nefarious scheme? No. It’s about the camera sensor size in imax cameras. Watch the video I made on how aspect ratios work in the description.

    • @AsadNazif
      @AsadNazif 2 года назад +1

      Yeap. Sensor size is one.
      But another thing is you have to remember, IMAX design their screens to sit nearer to the screen to fill your peripheral vision. So the story is still meant (in IMAX’s perspective) to be told in anamorphic, but the extra screen real estate fills your peripheral vision as if there’s no end to your eyes and feels larger. The extra real estate wasn’t exactly use for story telling (although some filmmakers have taken advantage of that).
      From the years after filmmakers have used the the extra real estate for more than just peripheral vision, IMAX enhanced on consumer level is just giving ppl whatever fully was shot.
      But I do agree that it’s not meant to be the way normal IMAX is and my own opinion, IMAX is reducing is quality of name by doing it with Disney although it helps bring the brand more known.

      @MovieUniversity  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for asking!
      Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos not showing up is an in app issue with Disney+. Even though you may not see the tags on screen once you play something you know is in Vision or Atmos your equipment should switch over to those modes.

    I don’t know about others. But I really like the taller aspect ratio of the IMAX version. I’m so tired of the black bars. I want to be able to enjoy every inch of the screen space on my TV I paid for. If I want the wide aspect ratio, I’d just go to a theater.

      The full imax film ratio of 1.9:1 is larger that the 16:9 one. While it’s shrunk on screen to fit in the image the sensor that’s capturing the image inside the camera is actually larger therefore showing more.

    • @MovieUniversity
      @MovieUniversity  Год назад

      That’s a good idea.
      It might be lossy because of bandwidth limitations. While steaming is improving, it’s still not on par with physical.

    • @MovieUniversity
      @MovieUniversity  Год назад +1

      DTS responded, but they passed the buck over to Disney to answer it without giving me any info. "While we are eager to talk about expansion for DTS - we want to be respectful and careful with our partner relationships (Disney) and cannot speak for them. It may be best for you to reach out to Disney directly about DTS:X on Disney+."
      BUT, another guy I'm friendly with in the industry who was at DTS until recently told me it would absolutely have to be lossy for the simple fact that the bandwidth just doesn't exist yet to stream good surround sound. Which made sense to me after he said that. I got a video on this channel talking about why physical is still better than streaming that covers this topic if you want to check it out sometime.
