We can all agree that the captain made the right decision to abandon the departure and dock to ensure safety. The cloud seen in this video is a shelf cloud, as pointed out by another Boat Friend in this comment section. The wind gusts were moving directly over the canal, which could have pushed the ship into the wall. Chuck, this is one of those rare videos where I don’t even talk because the weather did all the talking. I just happened to go down there to watch a ship and this all started taking place. One of the Boat friends mentioned that that’s a shelf cloud in the video, I can’t believe that I actually recorded that with the wind and a rainbow simultaneously. Wild action that day.
Whoa! The Gales of November is a great leaf blower! Lol! Beautiful rainbow also! I caught myself narrating like you do lol! The anchor, the 27ft draft, the Super structure with the radar going, the salute, boom, the backwash and the Capt thanking the well wishers! Awesome Mike. Thank you again.😊
That’s exactly right! That would be the ultimate leaf blower. One of the Boat friends mentioned that the cloud that we see in this video is a shelf cloud, very interesting without a doubt and powerful.
Absolutely, the Captain is very seasoned and made a great decision. Always thinking about safety first those people at American steamship company. With that said, I have never recorded a storm with a rainbow and shelf cloud at the same time.
Hey Mike, and all the Global Boat Friend Nation, from an icy Bismarck but calm. Wow, you know how to pick em lately, as the Witch was really letting it all hang out there for awhile!! That Lake looked dangerous at the start, but got better as time went on. The ASC Century was riding low with a full load of coal, and the waves did not seem to hinder her movement. Still, we want to wish the good ship and crew a safe voyage as this weather can change in a hurry as we all know. What a bonus to see a Rainbow which seemed to let us know that the worst of the squall has passed into Wisconsin. Take care of yourself Mike as you sound like you catching a cold from all the weather you have taken us out in…. The Nation appreciates your effforts, but stay healthy! Later Man, and nicely done as always…..
It's a good thing the ship had a full load of coal, because that wind really made it look like it was fighting for its life! I don’t think I felt when that strong that went straight over the canal like that. It’s one thing to have a bad storm, but to have a rainbow at the same time? Wow!
Wowser! I live in Ontonagon, in the western U.P. and we get these winds often by November and during the beginning of winter, you can hear that lake smashing all night & day!!❤❤❤

Another lovely day in Duluth. The late Captain Jim Van Dongen, M/V Indiana Harbor, would use the bow thruster to keep the ship on a parallel course to the wall. Few masters are skilled enough to use technique.

The rainbow over the Bayfield tug is my favorite part of this, plus the fact that you took us outside to get a feel for that northern weather. Thank you, Mike, for another fun to watch video!🙂
It’s one thing to record a rainbow, but to have it combined with a shelf, cloud, huge wind, and waves, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to record this exact situation ever again. I’m still stunned.
I know those winds from Lake Michigan...sister lives in St Joe, Mi...we go to watch the ocean ships come in to load at Benton Harbor...to much wind and the sand feels like needles !!! Really love your podcasts...sooooo interesting !!! Thank you !
Saint Joe Michigan definitely gets a lot of wild weather. I can’t recall ever being part of a storm where at the same time I looked up and saw rainbow.
I’ve seen a lot of wind coming in or going out of the canal, but not a lot of crosswind like this and especially when a ship was going to leave, that Captain made the right move to stop and dock.
I wish that someone had filmed the American Century returning to dock. That must have been something to see - using the thrusters and keeping her bow into the wind.
Actually, what happened is the American Century departed from CN dock after loading taconite, as it rounded the corner at Rice‘s Point the storm blasted Duluth and the captain knew right away that ship would be in big trouble if it went through the canal. It did a quick dock over at the fuel dock.
Hey Mike. Thank you for bringing us the full experience. The forces of wind and waves together with the sight and sounds of these majestic beasts seemingly eager to get out and play that timeless rivalry of nature vs. man.
Rich, I’ve told other Boat friends the same thing, there’s no way I’ll ever be able to replicate this video again. A shelf cloud, tremendous wind, waves, 1000 footer that had to stop, I don’t know what to tell you, a rainbow as well. You have to be kidding me. I’ll never forget it.
Holy cow! I mean literally it’s like the scene from Twister, when the winds going so hard they see the cow.. that’s some harsh wind! Thanks for braving it! ❤
How can I ever replicate this situation? I’ve said it to others, a rainbow, a shelf, cloud, incredible wind, and 1000 foot ship that had to make a stop because of a safety situation. It was absolutely unbelievable. I think the rainbow really puts it over the top. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to record something this wild again.
Mike, how wild was that man! Can you imagine, a wild wind storm like that with a shelf cloud and a rainbow at the same time? What are the chances of getting that on video brother?
I love the weather like that as well. I was not expecting any of this to happen as I was just down there to watch one of my favorite ships. Depart without recording but all of this happened when I went down there. It was so tremendous all of this at the same time, the ship docking, the wind, the waves, the rainbow.
The lake is living up to its reputation today. The fate of the Edmund Fitzgerald is so heart breaking. As is all of the other ships that lie in its depths. 🙏 I love the song by Gordon Lightfoot “The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. I was so thrilled to come to Duluth earlier this year for the Grandmas Marathon. To see Lake Superior made the trip extra special for me. Duluth is beautiful!
That is something else! Mike there would be a lot of windage on that ship ! The canal is not that wide Real skill to sail it through Just found out the end of the rainbow is in Duluth ! Awsome video ! Have a great day !
I’ve never seen anything like it, to have a rainbow in the middle of a big windstorm like that, it’s surreal! It was going right over the canal, that wind, it was produced by a shelf cloud that you could see in the video.
Bob, the Captain was very smart to dock, as it was attempting to depart Duluth. That could’ve been very wild and scary. Again, the Captain made the right choice with that severe wind that was blasting the canal
Serious, I was standing there, looking around, asking myself, what is this! A rainbow, wind, waves, a shelf cloud, 1000 foot ship that had to stop! Everything was going on at once
Wow! Always something new with you Mike. That was some wild wind and hard choppy water. Great video! Appreciate you braving the elements. Thank you and God bless.
It definitely was something new Jeff, I don’t think I’ll be able to record something like this ever again. Too many things that were going on at one time that I don’t think can be replicated especially that rain with that bad weather.
Deb, it was kind of surreal because the wind was so unbelievably strong that it stopped that ship from moving, however, a huge, beautiful rainbow was there at the same time!
I didn’t have my wind canceling microphone so I had to go in and quickly tell you what was going on and then go out and let the storm do the talking. It sure did some talking.
I really still can’t get over the rainbow with all of the other things going on. I’ve recorded bad weather, but I was in disbelief seeing a rainbow at the same time.
I’ll bet you remember many of those storms like that, here’s a question for you though Bernie, do you ever remember seeing a shelf cloud with a rainbow and wild wind like that before in Duluth?
@ Mike, I’ve seen a shelf cloud with a rainbow in Florida….can’t remember if there was wind that day but I went through hurricane IAN with 150 mph wind…does that count?
Exactly! Gales of November! It’s that time of year. What’s interesting as what you see in the video as a shelf cloud, and then we see a rainbow, how often do I get to see something like that at the same time? Never.
That ship is a beast, 1000 feet, however, with that said, that ship could easily have been pushed into the wall with that significant wind if it kept going and didn’t choose to dock instead of departing.
I am certainly glad that the captain made the decision not to run the risk of travel on the turbulent seas generated by these high winds! I know they are used to sailing in all kinds of weather, but some conditions are obviously just too dangerous to enter into. It takes quite a gale to halt a vessel of this size and weight! This was stunning footage of the lake in the high winds, and of the interesting clouds in the sky (and there was even a rainbow thrown in for good measure!). Really, it must have been fun for you to experience this in person! (I am a bit odd in that I kind of like being out in storms, just so long as I am not in any kind of real danger…). 🙂
Janet, the captain of that ASC ship is a true professional and I know they will always make a decision that is safe. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to capture all of this going on at one time in one video ever again. On top of it a rainbow! Are you serious? I still can’t believe I recorded it.
Stephanie, thank you so much for checking out the video on a Sunday night. Can you believe that there was a rainbow on one part of the city and then there was a shelf cloud with tremendous wind on the lake on the other side of town. It’s still unbelievable that I recorded this.
I don’t think I’ll ever get a shelf cloud that we saw in the video with this wild wind and waves with a rainbow ever again in my life. This was so incredible.
That is so true, those ships even though they are large. It’s like having a big wall up in the air and that’s how all of that surface space is used, pushes it hard, I’m glad that the Captain was able to dock it safely. It was an unbelievable situation with the entire weather package, the wind, the waves the rainbow, I still can’t believe it.
Connie, can you believe that I caught a rainbow with the wind and a shelf cloud like that? There was so much going on. I think a meteorologist would love to see something like this.
How unbelievable was that! The vessel left CN and when it got over by the fuel dock, it was really obvious to the captain that it’s not going to work too well going through that canal. Did you see that rainbow up there as well? That was crazy with the storm at the same time and a shelf cloud.
Mike, I still can’t believe that there was a rainbow with a shelf cloud and everything else going on. Could I say this might be a meteorologist dream? I still can’t believe it.
The captain was very smart to stop before the ship went into the canal. The captain on the radio that it was departing, and I was watching it depart and then it immediately docked for safety at the fuel dock. You could see why, that was unbelievable. By the way, did you see my emails, the video that you sent was spectacular. Thank you so much. Unbelievable!

@vibewithmike not sure what year it was but in late November early December we were in thick ice behind a breaker when a nasty storm hit and through us windward into the ice slashing a hundred foot gash into the bulkhead but luckily we were empty and using all our pumps at full capacity limped over to Greenbay for dry dock but then got stuck in the thickest fog bank I've ever witnessed for 6 days working 24/7 watches . Couldn't see your hand in front outstretched ! Luckily we held out and dry docked calling it a season!

The gales of November. It’s no joke.
You are totally right, and what you saw in the video was a shelf cloud. It produced some serious wind less as you could see.
Wow that is impressive that the wind could do that to a thousand footer! Mother Nature is not one to be messed with!
Mike, how wild was that man! Can you imagine, a wild wind storm like that with a shelf cloud and a rainbow at the same time? What are the chances of getting that on video brother?
@ that was awesome to see glad you got it on video!!
Wow. I would be the person sitting out there. Like wild weather.

The canal is not that wide
Real skill to sail it through
Just found out the end of the rainbow is in Duluth !
Awsome video !
Have a great day !
I’ve never seen anything like it, to have a rainbow in the middle of a big windstorm like that, it’s surreal! It was going right over the canal, that wind, it was produced by a shelf cloud that you could see in the video.
The Gail's of November come calling !
The wind was going right over the canal 💨🌊
Wow that was some wind Mike. Cool shots of the Captain and the pivot. Hope you had a good weekend and a good week. ⚓👍
Bob, the Captain was very smart to dock, as it was attempting to depart Duluth. That could’ve been very wild and scary. Again, the Captain made the right choice with that severe wind that was blasting the canal
Hey Boat Friend! I always appreciate you "play by play" during you videos eve though today's was less due to the wind!
The wind did all of the talking in this one! 💨💨💨
Wicked wind thereMike. Be careful out there.
The wind was moving sideways through the canal and the American century had to make a stop to avoid an accident for sure
Flipping amazing footage Mike! Thanks for all you do! ❤
Wow!!! The water is beautiful though 😬
Deb, it was kind of surreal because the wind was so unbelievably strong that it stopped that ship from moving, however, a huge, beautiful rainbow was there at the same time!
@ The wind was sooo loud too. The rainbow was stunning. Did you tie yourself to the pier? 🫣
@Deb_L I was on the edge of needing a time myself down for sure
@@vibewithmike 😮
Thanks Mike for braving the wind & cold. Always love seeing the freighters. Stay warm.
Wow,first storm that had you inside, and look at the rainbow, thumbs up,at least the gates are closed, that wind is really whipping
I didn’t have my wind canceling microphone so I had to go in and quickly tell you what was going on and then go out and let the storm do the talking. It sure did some talking.
Wow great video capture Mike. The wind, the waves, the rainbow, the ship. I expected the green gates would be closed with that violent wind.
I really still can’t get over the rainbow with all of the other things going on. I’ve recorded bad weather, but I was in disbelief seeing a rainbow at the same time.
Good one, Mike…..that’s the Duluth I remember….cold and windy with an overcast sky.
@berniesmith6466 yes, hurricane Ian is the ultimate storm. Nothing compares.
Oh my, the lake looks angry
It was a wonderful and unique situation to capture this wild weather in Duluth. I don’t think I’ll ever see it again with a rainbow like that.
crazy winds out of the west on the Niagara peninsula for a few days now. Gales of November, eh?
Exactly! Gales of November! It’s that time of year. What’s interesting as what you see in the video as a shelf cloud, and then we see a rainbow, how often do I get to see something like that at the same time? Never.
Wow. That massive ship seemed to go on forever! I can just imagine how huge it is in person.
@
Yes, that was amazing….made it absolutely worth your while to be out there at that time! 🙂 🚢
The witch of November comes stealing! .
The wind came out out of nowhere, and a rainbow at the same time, that really is something I’ve never seen before and I’m so happy I could record it
Fantastic video Mike!! Thanks!!😊
Stephanie, thank you so much for checking out the video on a Sunday night. Can you believe that there was a rainbow on one part of the city and then there was a shelf cloud with tremendous wind on the lake on the other side of town. It’s still unbelievable that I recorded this.
That was some gnarly and miserable looking wave and wind conditions!
I don’t think I’ll ever get a shelf cloud that we saw in the video with this wild wind and waves with a rainbow ever again in my life. This was so incredible.
You sure have a windy day today. Safe travels captin and crew. It's amazing how the wind can push around a ship of that size and weight.
Those are some angry waves 🌊. Love the rainbow 🌈.
Connie, can you believe that I caught a rainbow with the wind and a shelf cloud like that? There was so much going on. I think a meteorologist would love to see something like this.
It was funny watching it try to get out the first time. I work in the port and seen it all.
How unbelievable was that! The vessel left CN and when it got over by the fuel dock, it was really obvious to the captain that it’s not going to work too well going through that canal. Did you see that rainbow up there as well? That was crazy with the storm at the same time and a shelf cloud.
WOW! That is some serious wind
Mike, I still can’t believe that there was a rainbow with a shelf cloud and everything else going on. Could I say this might be a meteorologist dream? I still can’t believe it.
I thought you were going to have to connect a safety line to one of the anchor displays to keep from going in the canal. Wicked Winds!
Unbelievable!
wow @Vibe With Mike that was so scary and beautiful at same time with rainbow! Stay safe out there as you never know what Mother Nature will do next!
Mother nature brought everything out in this video, the beautiful rainbow, the wild shelf cloud with the wind and waves. It was fun.
The gales of November
Exactly! However, I never heard of a rainbow being part of that equation? 😂👋
Ummmmmm I can hear one of your Boat Friends yelling! 😅😅 Thanks for not editing me out! Happy Thanksgiving week friend! Give wife and all well wishes from me!
Yes, we can hear a person that make sure that the sailors feel welcome! A wonderful Boat friend, you! I’ve told you many times before your enthusiasm and excitement is really contagious. It was really interesting. Seeing that weather develop with the rainbow and that wild wind. I don’t think I’ll ever forget it, Lauren. I hope you’re doing great. Say hello to David as well.
@vibewithmike David says hello and he enjoyed the video also!
@laurenolson8492 I still think it’s so cool that he was able to see some of that wild weather in Duluth.
All good uncle mike
Hey! Can you believe how wild that wind was? And then, if that wasn’t cool enough, there was a huge rainbow at the same time as the ship had to stop because of the conditions.
Oh my, goodness! Stay safe!!!
Luckily, I didn’t have an umbrella because I would’ve flown away like Mary Poppins, it was so cool to see a rainbow in this big shelf cloud in the sky, it was so cool
That rainbow was beautiful to witness. Thanks for braving that weather to film for us!
@maryannpost8146 the rainbow was the gateway to the calmer weather behind I believe
Phenomenal Phenomenal video!
It was amazing getting all of those weather elements in one video, rainbow, wind, shelf, cloud, etc.
Hey Mike, yeah that is crazy
You’re not kidding, Randy, look at all of those things going on at one time in the video. A rainbow and a shelf cloud at the same time? That’s wild.
" The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound .................... T'was the witch of November come stealin' '" Bon voyage, mon Capitaine!

Great video ! Many thanks !❤️
Roy, that weather was so unbelievable, I still can’t believe I captured all of that going on with a huge rainbow at the same time
@ hi Mike, yes that looked very ominous and could possibly some destruction. Thanks for your great videos.
@royschmidt675 hey, thank you so much for taking time out of your night to watch the video into leave a comment. Happy Thanksgiving if we don’t talk by then.
@ you’re very welcome and wish you and your loved ones a great thanksgiving as well ! Take care
@royschmidt675 👋👋👋👋👋👍👍👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️
Mike : Nice shot starting at 4:12
It was so wild to catch us on video, a rainbow, a shelf cloud, and all of that wildness on the water. It was really cool to be able to get this for you and all of our friends.
Wild..thanks Mike
The most amazing thing to me is capturing the storm with the rainbow simultaneously. I still can’t believe it.
@Vibe with Mike, WOW!! What day was that?
Thanks for running out to grab this!
This was around noon time if I recall correctly. Just a few days ago. I still cannot believe that I caught a rainbow with a shelf cloud and all of the other weather going on. It’s definitely a one time experience for me to catch on video. That was so incredible.
Love your channel ❤️❤️🙏🙏
Thank you so much, friend! How can I go wrong with hitting record when I saw all of this going on? Honestly, I wasn’t even planning on recording a video until I saw everything happening at the same time. I’m sure glad I did hit record.
Great video,-moody lake that dsy@
You are so right, that lake had a mood of its own that day, but it also gave us a surprise rainbow at the same time
Yipes!! Safety first
Janet, that’s exactly right, safety first. There is so many situations that I’ve seen in Duluth, but I’ve never caught all of this going on at the same time with a rainbow.
Breezy!❤
Absolutely, extremely breezy, I still can’t believe that I caught a rainbow in the middle of all of this with a shelf cloud. It was really incredible to be out there.
Witch of November
Exactly, witch of November! 🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊💨💨💨💨
Little windy ! 😂
Greg, can you believe that your buddy Mike was just standing watching a ship and all of a sudden that wind hit, the wave started flying and then a rainbow appears with a shelf cloud. I don’t know how I could replicate this video ever.
Where does that ship sail to?
Great question, I believe that that ship was leaving from Minnesota to go to Michigan
Right. She just delivered a load of coal to the power plant in St Clair, Mi. And as I type this note, she is already heading back to the Twin Ports. She is fueling right now in Sarnia, Canada.@@vibewithmike
Pretty windy
Hey friend, I see that you have our new flag as your profile photo! Very cool. That weather was so incredible. There’s no way I think I can replicate all of those things going on at once ever again.
How did i watch these videos for 2 years before seeing the orange safety ladders?
Hey, that’s what it’s all about, there’s always something new that we learn each day. There have been many things that I have walked past 1000 times and finally noticed. That’s the fun of watching videos and seeing new things.
Has any ship ever crashed into the canal?
Yes, Kathy, take a look at this, this was not due to wind or waves, but it still happened. The ship crashed right into the wall. ruclips.net/video/SQwHN8rShhU/видео.html
Gosh. Just checked that Presque Isle video out. Yowza! Talk about a sideswipe. 😮
Is that American Flag replaced weekly!
I know what you mean, they have to replace those flags quite a bit from what I’ve seen. That wind can get really wild and violent. I still can’t believe I caught a rainbow in the middle of that storm.
Good evening Mike The rainbow at Duluth Say to me peace at the world Stop killing the innocent People whole world Take care My frıend Your turkısh seaman frıend Happy thanksgiving you and family a nd everybody celebration at Turkey day Take care my frıend
My friend from Turkey, I will always side with world peace. The rainbow was so beautiful. I have never caught that with a storm at the same time.

@ozcanucal7062 my friend in Turkey, it’s always a pleasure hearing from you. Someday, I hope we get to meet. 🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷
This part 1:35
Yes, it was definitely wild out there
Hi boat friends and Mike no
How are you doing, my friend! I don’t think I’ll ever catch a shelf cloud with a rainbow and a storm at the same time ever again in Duluth. This might’ve been a one time situation.
🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 I'd be sick
It was really wild out there. So many things going on with the weather it was hard to keep the camera focused.
Not looking to good for the captain
The captain made the right move to wait it out
Nice Rainbow 🌈! Aloha Mike ' I so remember Cold November days and their storms forever etched in my soul! COLD GAILS 🥶! WORSE WAS COMING OUT OF STE SAULT MARIE! HUGE WAVES !
Aloha, right back to you, my friend! I hope you’re doing great! I still can’t believe that huge rainbow was right there in the middle of that wind storm
That's pretty identical of one of my favorite ships I worked on ' the Saint Clair !
I think that’s so cool that you were able to work on the ship ships. What are some other stories I recall. Is there anything similar to this that you can remember? It seemed like a beautiful day with a rainbow with the wild wind like that, it was surreal.
@LiveAlohaOhana see, this is the kind of cool stuff that all of us dream about being able to sit down across from someone like you and pick your brain and hear stories like this. It’s just simply amazing. I’m so honored and thrilled that you are in this comment section and part of this channel. Anytime you feel like dropping some knowledge on all of us regarding situations or things that you’ve experienced, please do. It’s so enjoyable for all of us.
Better safe than sorry common sense
Extremely smart move by the Captain
