I test drove the 2024 TRD OffRoad manual, and owned a manual Taco (3rd Gen). The rear end gear ratio on BOTH trucks is insanely high (4.30:1). That hurts the MPG on the manual. The RPMs are way too high at highway speed, and that's exactly why highway MPG isn't the greatest on the manual. Keeping it at 65MPH on the highway probably would have helped, too...70-75MPH kills the MPG. The 8 speed auto version of this truck does much better at highway speeds (about 1600 RPM @ 65MPH). Those who own the auto are reporting MPG as high as 25-26 mpg on the highway. Great video....thank you!
You bet BMunster! While I totally agree 60-65 would drastically improve the MPG, to me that doesn’t seem real world. The majority of traffic flows at speeds faster than that so I wanted to provide that stat line. I guess another way to look at it is “well the WORST it can do is 20 on the highway” (before you become a felon because of high speeds of course). While the automatic’s added gears certainly aids in its efficiency, the manual’s classic touch combined with the ‘24s modern feel is a match made in heaven for me. Thanks for tuning in, more to come.
The 2023 TRD Sport 4×4 SBed 4×4 rates 23mpg on highway & it is fairly accurate if not a tab better at 60mph on i95.. IIRC the 2024 Tacoma is a tad heavier & with a 2.4T it is working harder to push it down the road. We wont talk about if a trailer is hooked to it. I like the 2024 Tacoma's in some area's. The 2.4L has been around for awhile & is a good motor. Not sure about the Turbo & time will tell. Drive it with ease & it should be reliable IMO. I would be wery on hauling a heavy trailer tho. Great MPG review. Be safe
Ridgeline averages 21.5 highway only, 17 city and I sit somewhere around 19 combined. Ridgeline drive train is old and out dated and still supporting the v6. Not going to lie I hoped the new Taco would do 23+ highway only... Maybe the hybrid drivetrain from 4runner/Landcruiser could do better? Granted the taco does "truck" things better lol. Love the in depth reviews man! Cant wait to see more TACO vids
If you drive at lower speeds, or the automatic, 23+ is feasible for sure in the Tacoma. In the 75+ world and a manual however you’re a little bit more constrained hence the 20 number.
Great video. I can’t wait for mine to come in. Can you do a video on the towing system? I’m so curious how to put the towing mode on in the manual. The automatics have a tow/haul button and the manuals don’t.
Thanks for the review love manual trucks. But I must admit I’m disappointed in the mpg. I have a 22 Frontier 4x4 with the 3.8 and 9 speed auto. I average between 24 to 26 on long trips with intelligent cruise set at 73. So my question to Toyota would be why did go to a turbo 4 cylinder? It’s not for gas mileage by those figures.
You bet! To be frank the gearing has a big role to play in a truck’s highway MPG number, as a result it’s tough to compare a 6-Speed manual with a 9-Speed auto. That said those numbers you’re seeing so closely mimic what automatic Tacoma drivers are seeing! One of the big reasons for Toyota going with the 2.4T over keeping the naturally aspirated 6 is the rest of their lineup. This engine is used in the Tacoma/4Runner/Land Cruiser/Highlander/LexusRX/LexusTX/etc etc etc etc, as a result it’s easier to adjust it to another vehicle instead of revamp a naturally aspirated unit that would only continue to live in this truck. Cost savings and it works well here. Full review coming soon, thanks for watching!
I get much better mileage with 23 pro , is this a joke? My v6 in similar conditions makes about 22~24mpg , Toyota sells you i4 for the price of v6 with mpg of v8 :)
@nikotal.4282 a tiny turbo four cylinder is going to rev higher than the V6 non turbo, also it doesn't help with E10/E15 fuels, usually see a drop in fuel economy with the blending of ethanol, my guess is Toyota probably used recreational gasoline to help get that 23 mpg figure.
comment on no 2. No real truck , even hybrid or even EV is making great advancement so far in term in MPG efficiency! It is what it is and stop dissing ICE because it is old tech!
20.4 mpg at 75 mph is not bad. But the highest speed limit in my state is 70. Most of my freeway driving is at no more than 65 mph (with a 60 limit), where I bet the Tacoma can get closer to that 23 mpg number.
You might do slightly better over the course of a longer trip. I did way better driving to Wyoming and back to NJ at 75mph than I generally do back and forth from work at the same speed. I imagine that was due to more consistent speed over the course of 3,800+ highway miles. Not much “city” driving aside from getting to a gas station.
2019 frontier V6 4.0 L. Six speed manual transmission on a long trip. I will get 23 on the freeway doing approximately 70. Most efficient speed is going to be 40 mph up to an including 60. After 65 however, your MPG will go down significantly.
Thanks again!! You gave us the RPM's at 75 MPG.
You bet Gino! That is what I am here for.

@@MoneyShift I hear ya. They're def fun to drive around town...just not on the highway! LOL....good stuff! Keep it up!
Great vid. Can’t wait for my manual off road to come in
Thanks M85! Full review coming next week! Hope it helps

It's kinda wild that my 2020 F150 with a 5.0 V8 got roughly the same highway fuel economy as this new Tacoma.
You would get better mpg at 65 mph. Try your test at 55mph and 65 mph..pain it takes longer to get there. Try driving at 55 mph tedious 😂
Just did a video at 65 haha. I don’t know if I’ll do another one at 55, that seems to slow to me 😂
So the automatic transmission is definitely more efficient on the highway than the manual is the lesson?? 6spd vs 8spd (makes sense 🤔).
For sure!
Is Trip A a 999 mile trip meter or a 9,999 mile trip meter?

The Ridgeline has a lot better engine and the all-wheel-drive system is unbeatable
That screen in this truck is like a pimple on a ass

You bet! I’ll start working on logistics.
Thanks for the kind words

Well my 2001 2.4L engine also gets 23mpg and it's old. My 2022 V6 taco gets 13-14 but I lifted it 3in and have a pop up camper.
Realistic driving, that’s pretty good

Two things to know:
1. Turbo engines don't do much better on mpg
2. ICE power plant efficiency is not making great advancement anymore.

The number can only go up from here! (Short of you driving like a felon 😂)
Agreed, at 65, 23 is the likely result. Thanks for tuning in Dave!
Great video - wish it was done at 65 mph though.
@@KTB3007 doing that one this week! So many have asked for it, so going to do it. See you Sunday!

Tough to do 3,800 miles in one video, but I will be sure to log the mileage over the course of my ownership as best I can! Thanks for watching.
I'm still tripping that Toyota offered a manual with some of the new Tacoma trims.
Right? Such a treat
My 21 Trd off-road manual gets 20.5 mpg hiway 70-75. 🤷♂️
Cool!
My limited, I really do not go over 65, gets 27.
ya, 27 for just going 55 in a highway flat or descending. just a bit ascending road plus of traffic here and there will drop it to 20.
My overall after 1k is 24. That is highway, city, and waiting in gate traffic getting into a Naval Base.

Ya I can see the Tacoma getting about that at 70MPH as well.
I average 14mpg in my 6 speed manual Frontier lol.
I get 19 to 21 miles a gallon on my 23 a/c Tacoma m/t it depends on how you drive the vehicle is the biggest factor. Just saying.
Without a doubt! I’m just a data point
Should get better mileage when you brake it in!
I’ll retest for sure!
Not good MPG , i can't imagine mpg on the street
that is garbage for a 4cyl turbo lol
😅
I will keep my 2023... to much electronic junk for me, my 2023 is my last toyota, in canada this thing cost near 60k, not worth it
And a fine truck that is Danny. I hope you enjoy it in good health!
