  • I think I finally kept up with Sam in agate spotting. We both agreed that I found the best one in four days of hunting. Of course we also found lots of other great rocks too.

    Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

Today my granddaughter and I stopped at Marquette, what beautiful colored rocks, and the water is so clear, we did pick up some unusually colored green rocks, plus 8 pieces of beach glass, so many to pick from, Monday we will be in Grand maria, plus we found the most beautiful green rocks, I can't wait to move along the coast to see what we can find, lake superior rocks are so bright 😅, these rocks are so different from lake Huron rocks, but we spent a lot of time there on the way up to the U P, nothing has disapointed us to far, wish me luck, that is my ambitious just one agate, thank for another great video 😊

    Thanks as always for sharing your adventure and your finds! I’m curious if you tumble all of you agate finds, and if you keep the “m-agates” or leave behind? Also do you and Sam have a favorite region to hunt - Western UP, Eastern UP, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, etc?

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  11 месяцев назад +1

      I don't tumble any of my agates. I take some magates home, but not all of them. I'd say I tend to take them home though. As time goes on, I have been taking fewer and fewer home. If they are smoothish and look like they'll tumble, I bring them home. If they're agatey, but kind of ugly or rough, I leave them on the beach. One of these days, I need to go through all of my previous agate finds and pull out all the magates and tumble them.
      Sam and I have always gone to the eastern U.P. This year I asked if he wanted to go to the Keweenaw instead, but he wanted to go back to the same places we always go. He has never hunted rocks in the Keweenaw. Maybe next year, I'll insist that we go somewhere else. Sam and I live in Alpena, so Sam also hunts Lake Huron, but he and his girlfriend usually go without me.

    As a west-coaster, it is kind of sad to see fire damage even in your area, and so close to the lake at that. I guess we don't think about the fact that there might be lightning there, and careless campers can do damage almost anyplace. Hopefully Michigan won't see the kind of fires we have in CA, OR, WA, and B.C. Thanks for the video - looks a soup & hot coffee day!

    19:00 - that's definitely an agate and a very nice one as far as our standards go in the UK! lol there was a few there you mentioned you weren't sure but not all Agate is banded you should take a flashlight and as long as light passes through and it's made of Chalcedony it would be classed as Agate! 😊 great finds! i envy the States when it comes to Rockhounding 😂

      There are a lot of people who say that agates have to have bands. I'm not really in that camp since I think moss agates are still agates. But in the case of Lake Superior agates, I tend to think that they need to have bands.

    Rob, another great video and rock hunt. You mentioned that you don’t tumble any of your agates. Do you polish them on your cab, or just leave them as is? I would imagine some of the small ones are tough to handle but above a certain size, may work fine. I bought some rough agates from Kingsley N and tumbled a couple to test and I think I would rather try to polish them on my cab if they are not too small. Thanks as always for the great video!

    • @MichiganRocks
