I'll take him in a heartbeat if he could get to me! I have had 4 or 5 Great Danes in my life & know they are great big couch potatoes and velcro dogs! If I wasn't disabled, I would come and get him but can't and my disability money income each month doesn't allow money for shipping him to me! I absolutely love these Gentle Giants and would spoil him with so much love and care-- feeding several small meals a day on an elevated bowl to reduce the chance of bloat or twisted stomach! His heart would probably need to be monitored because his bad condition now! Standing b g by ready-to-wear love and care for him!

I can understand a parent(s) making the decision to find another satisfactory home for that pet because the kid(s) aren't fulfilling their responsibility of care for the animal. But for an adult to let an animal in their care starve is unacceptable.

I rescued 2 Great Danes last year. Both weigh around 140-145 pounds each. They each get 8 cups of food per day plus I make them chicken bone broth and give them carrots, apples, bananas, celery, flax seeds, pumpkin seeds, and other assorted fruits and veggies. They love peanut butter, plain yogurt, coconut oil, milk bones, and other treats. I do try to mix it up with their food and they both have shiny coats

This reminds me of the backstory for the dog my mom got after she retired. She was even slightly more emaciated than poor Scooby here. Original persons got her as a puppy, and then after a couple years had a baby of their own and apparently couldn't afford to take care of both. Except instead of immediately surrendering her, they just let her starve and starve. She was about 30lbs when we got her, when she should have been about 70lbs. She was honestly a GREAT dog too, it was really upsetting to hear that she'd gone through that. We were privileged to give her 6 years of happiness before cancer got her.
If you can't afford to take care of the animal, that's fine, but don't hang onto the animal and hurt them. Rehome them or surrender them to a Rescue who can help them. I wish Scooby's original people would face criminal charges.

Former vet tech here. Since Great Danes are deep-chested, you want to feed them smaller meals more frequently rather than 1-2 large meals a day. Danes can be prone to GDV (Gastro dilatation volvulus), aka bloat. This is a life-threatening and medical emergency situation. Raised feeder bowls are helpful and for fast eaters, slow feeding bowls are also beneficial. Hope this helps. Love your channel! Wished you weren’t on the other side of the country from me, or I would be adopting dogs immediately!❤

Adults need to stop buying pets for their kids. When you bring a pet into your home YOU, the adult, are the one who will be taking care of it. My Mom gave me a birds when I was a kid. Those birds died a few months later because I didn’t know what I was doing. And it was tragic and I never got over it. I felt so guilty about it for decades. Now, as an adult, I realize that my Mom should not have allowed a little kid, who wasn’t even responsible enough to feed myself or shower myself properly, to be in complete charge of other beings lives. It’s cruel and irresponsible. I feel terrible for any animal that’s bought as a pet for a child.

There is nothing earthly I wouldn't give to feed her one more time. My heart broke knowing people didn't care if Scooby EVER got fed. That level of starvation occurred over a long and suffering path. I wish I was emotionally ready for another dog right now, but my son and I aren't. Scooby we will find your furever home. ❤

It is so easy to hurt when an animal is not fed properly, but it is not always as easy to feed animals as it seems. Like Rocky said - its not just about dropping kibbles into the bowl. Scooby may have anxiety and/or ptsd from his initial visit, he might be an anxious eater (will take a treat, but not eat reliably), hormonal balances, or have ibs or just have noisy dogs in the neighbourhood. There are so many situations. For example, my family has a beautiful ragdoll who had been abused by the breeders (forced into breeding multiple times, no successful pregnancy), and my family memeber spends every single day 1.5 hour handfeeding the cat, I spend a fortune on the cat's food (high shelf, 70% pure meat wet food + most expensive and species appropriate kibble), but sometimes the cat refuses to eat for weeks. Not everybody can afford time, not everybody understands animals so well, not everybody is able to put the animal above their feeling of attachment. Please, try to not be angry

Bath layer due to stress avoidance, and bloat again. Because he's young he does need to get up to weight healthy. 25% or less protien. He's great dane for sure, not a mix. Just very young very skinny. He's a great adoptable dog. Good luck! Here for you!

My lunkhead sister-in-law adopted a dog for her 8 year old son. About a year later he wanted a video game and she told him, you can have either the dog or the video game but you can’t have both. Guess what the little spoiled brat chose! The video game, so right back to the shelter the dog went. Kids these days are just ridiculous and they think they are so entitled to everything. Even worse are the parents who let their kids run all over them because it’s the innocent ones like this dog that are the ones to have to pay the price. The shelter she returned him to is a kill shelter so I hope the dog found a new home.

When my son wanted a dog for years and we finally decided we could properly provide for a dog and not worry about vet bills or food or having to move with a dog, we got one. I taught my kids to feed and walk and bathe him of course, and would put dog duty on their chore list, but ultimately when I got the dog I knew that we as adults would be the ones responsible for him, to make sure the kids were properly caring for him or to do it ourselves. And I had that dog for 15 years till his dying day even when the kids grew up (died of old age; still miss him)!!! Parents who get pets for their kids just to shut the kids up then give pets away like they're objects that simply aren't wanted anymore---- arrrgh!!!!!

Here is my experience from owning great danes
    - They think they are small dogs, and do not know their size; they will want to sit in your lap!
    - Great with kids and other animals (My Danes were submissive to my cats!)
    - They do not need a lot of exercise ( but that does not mean you do not need to walk them!)
    - Require raised water and food bowls (they can get twisted stomachs easy so be careful)
    - Surprisingly they do not eat that much (once grown), my German shepherds ate more.
    - Bark will scare off anyone (and possibly annoy the neighbours because its loud, deep and travels far!)
    -Are truly gentle giants
I was always a cat person, until I owned Great Danes! short life span is the hardest part

They will have chores revolving around them that I'll supervise to make sure they get done but I know the majority of care for the animals will be on me. I'll also never get rid of an animal simply because my kids stop caring for it, that animal will just become mine and whatever kid refuses to care for it will lose privileges to that animal.

@@katie85705 Please know that parrots don't really thrive on their own.
They need company, and in nature they're natural flock birds.
Also they can out live us by many years.
Then there's the issue of keeping a parrot in a cage. I know people do it, but it doesn't mean it's right.
I volunteered in rescue, and the number of parrots we got was horrifying. Screaming, plucked birds, sad and frustrated from years as single birds in cages. Aggressive towards either the man or the woman in the household.
A friend of mine had huge outdoor aviaries for the different types of parrots, and he gave them good lives, where they actually got their feathers back, became jolly, happy birds in their small flocks, flying, climbing, eating and socializing, just as their lives should be - except for freedom, as they could not survive in the wild in cold, Northern Europe.
Wishing you the best of luck🙂

So maybe that's why you see greyhound? But he's for sure all dane. They're so sweet and such gentle dogs. I've owed danes for 20+ years. They're my life, I'll never own another breed. This breed is so attached to their people and just loyal as can be. So gentle with small children and elders...it's weird...like they just know. They're so intune with their people, very intuitive. Best food would be a raw diet or premium kibble mixed with organ meat and whole foods...Slow and steady and hell gain weight. Danes are so forgiving and loving. Bless his heart❤

Adopting a dog as an adult and expecting kids to be held accountable for the care is insane. I wonder how the parent treat the kids knowing they allowed the dog to suffer. Scooby Doo is precious, a responsible person will give him love he was meant to get. I have great Danes and be careful not to over feed on treats, as they can have sensitive stomachs. A great food for dames is Victor, as it helps with balancing their systems. My current Dane has a sensitive stomach, so we are careful with feeding. You all need to be careful with what you feed him, how much / how fast you increase his food intake, as he can get the food in, but can Throw it up just as fast. Slow and steady feeding is the best way, but maybe 3/4 times a day. Thank you for being so kind!

I think people do the best they can. Unfortunately, sometimes the best you can do is not that great. :-( It's great that there are so many wonderful people who are willing to help out. You aren't just helping the dogs. Sometimes, you are providing more help than you realize to *people* in need. As someone who had to re-home a dog they loved very, very much I'm eternally grateful to the person who helped me. In the event, I think I was just fostering that dog until she found her forever home with the person she is with now.

I just googled Black Mouth Cur Great Dane mix and several of the pictures looked like Scooby's twins. It is just heartbreaking that he was allowed to get into the shape that he is in. There is not a valid excuse for that "stomach problems" or not. We just rescued a German Shepherd that was dumped in our neighborhood. He was chipped and purebred but when I spoke to his former owner they said he ran away and they didn't want him back. GSDs seem to be the newest breed that people are dumping in epidemic proportions around my town. I suspect that it is because they saw them on tv and thought they just had to have a puppy like that of their own. I wish people would stop getting puppies without considering that those puppies are going to get big and require care and commitment.

I can see this being a black mouth cur mix. Curs have greyhound in their ancestry so that might be why Rockie saw there--not just a starving dog but body configuration. Rhodesian Ridgebacks are supposed to be named for hair on top of the back growing in the opposite direction of the rest and I didn't see that on Scooby. Bless his heart, so happy to see he is in good hands now.
