- This interview took place in 1975 during Ms Day's book promotion tour. Her book, entitled "Her Own Story," landed at No. 1 on the New York Times Best-Seller list. Check it out - it's a great book!
What a beautiful (and classy) lady. Here she was surrounded by three males and still, she held her own. I know she really did not want to sing but Mike got her going. He also has a lovely voice! The result was amazing and simply beautiful. Thank you for this lovely memory.
Yup. Very personal questions. Probably should have been a one on one interview and some of the questions should have not been asked to begin with.
Her optimistic, positive outlook on life is what translated so well on to the screen. She was really no different in her movies than she was in real life. What a brilliant actress.
she led a miserable life with her 3 marriages, she was cheated millions by her husbands and broke her. her mother disowned her and she refused to take her son to a hospital due to her religion and died a recluse. Look it up.
@@MsMojoworks You have got it all wrong. Her mother never disowned her, in fact they were very close. She didn't refuse to take Terry to the hospital. Terry was living back in Beverly Hills with his wife. And she didn't die a recluse. I saw her a number of times up in Carmel, and many more of her friends often came to visit. Where on earth did you get all that fake information?
@@meenyminymoe from the person who was very close to her at the end of her life: Rex Reed at a tribute to her at Jazz at Liincoln Center, NYC. 10/14/23. If you want a debate, contact him not me.
She will always remain my favourite actress and singer
She is a legend not spoken of enough
Amazing lady Doris Day, she brought so many smiles to so many faces and hearts.
Great post! Always loved her singing, her effervescent smile and attitude, plus her TV Show. Didn't know much about her home life and disappointments, so this was quite revealing. Learned alot--a GREAT POST, Howard Gee!
I love how she just went into her groove when she began to sing. And sound flawless!
She was one of a kind. Need more of her kind,
Some people make the world a better place just being there.
That's Doris, allright!
Take that sentinel journey home Doris. Knowing God loves you and has blessed you. We will miss your beautiful spirit here on earth. RIP
Miss Doris Day is the most generous, kind and selfless person. Shes incredible intelligent, sensitive, and forgiving. Her physical talent, such as her amazing voice, wonderful and versatile acting are the best entertainment Hollywood ever produced. But only a shadow compared to her class and character.
Miss Doris Day is still the sexiest woman on the planet.
She's timeless! Love her fashion sense. It never goes out of style.
She just shines a beutiful and classy lady. You will be missed R.I.P. Doris Day.
I loved hearing her sing "Sentimental Journey" again, very moving...Happy 100th Birthday in Heaven, Doris. We love & miss you....
I just love this woman!!!! My favorite female vocalist of 'that' era!!!
Pepper Williams I've always admired her. She's a classy lady.
I' m wild(^) again, beguiled again, a simpering, wimpering child again, bewitched bothered and bewildered - that was a favourite Doris song during my teens. - I kept winding up my old gramophnone to hear it again.
Beautiful heart 😍 and soul ♥ and very trusting and Forgivening
Wow. Larger-than-life, beautiful entertainment legend right there. So glad Steve pointed out Doris's underrated comedy and dramatic actress prowess. I think trying to describe and to answer her legendary "Girl Next-Door" image was more difficult still then, because in hindsight with more time's passage we can see her filmography and characters in those films and how she was cast to be the perfect young lady who may have been sexy but always strived to uphold her image's respect. I just wish the panel would've added how successfully Doris literally reinvented her image through her film career, transitioning from classic color musicals to serious film biographies and dramas to her more lightweight yet hilarious late 1950s and early '60s domestic comedies, and then even her late '60s-early '70s TV sitcom work. She had and did it all, and so well. :)
AMEN!
Classy lady with a lot of talent, common sense, and wisdom...
And this is why I love this woman. She is classy and bright. It was never about money, but about your health and happiness. I think her active life benefited her being healthy in her golden years. RIP Doris! No one will ever replace you.
Sexy, talented, resilient, kind, and independent. That's a real woman.
Doris Day is my favorite female singer, because of her beautiful velvety smooth singing voice that she had. ❤😊
AND......
Dean Martin was my favorite male singing voice, because of his velvety smooth singing voice. ❤😊
And my dogs loved both of their singing voices too. ❤😊😊❤❤❤❤
She is a wonderful, beautiful and talented lady! Rest in peace.
Wow, what a beautiful woman. Such talent. The actors and actresses of yesteryear made Hollywood. Those were the golden days. Wish we go back in time. Doris, you will always be remembered and missed
at 3:25 Mike asks her about things you wouldn't even ask in private, let alone on national TV.
Mike asked Doris about things that she already made public in her book. Doris pulled no punches in her book. Doris wrote about all the sordid private details of her life. The book shocked so many people as people could not reconcile the sunshine personality that they saw on screen with the sordid details that she wrote about in her book. I read the book and came away admiring Doris even more for her ability to overcome bad experiences.
what a lovely person she was
💖 Brilliant
Man that ending was priceless!
Yes, it was. Doris was so hesitant to sing "live," but after singing in this clip, doesn't she look like she's proud that she did it?
she sounded beautiful singing...
Doris is 55 in this interview and I found her to be more attractive in her 40's and 50's than she was in her 20's and 30's and can't say that about any other actress. Don't know what it is about her that made her more attractive and sexy to me as got into her 40's and 50's.
That woman is beautiful.
She really didn't want to, but the effort was endearing. Probably a perfectionist who only wanted to do something that wast totally rehearsed...but the audience loves that kind of thing.
OJ Simpson and Doris Day in almost the same sentence...
How times have changed :)
Love her responses … all depends so much on your attitude and every person will experience it in their own way.
The way she lives life is the reason she always looked beautiful.TRUE QUICK STORY.WHEN I WAS A CHILD LIVING IN PUERTO RICO IN THE 1960'S MY NEPHEW GILBERT WAS A STORE DELIVERY BOY IN HIS TEENS.ONE OF THE AREA HAD WEALTHY PEOPLE .HE ALWAYS DELIVERED FOOD TO THIS SPECIAL LADY,DORIS DAY.SHE LIVED IN PUERTO RICO ONCE.HE ALWAYS SAID THAT SHE WAS A BEAUTIFUL DECENT LADY.HE WOULD ALWAYS TELL HIS MOM AND MY MOM.
How long did Doris Day live in Puerto Rico? She was so busy making movies in the 1960's it seems that the only place for Doris to live would be Los Angeles, the place where she made most of her films. Unless Doris made a film in Puerto Rico which I don't believe she ever did.
❤️ Love Doris Day, one of my favorite movies of hers is Midnight Lace which I never see at video stores.you can hear the 45rpm record "Mary Lou by The Creative Force " on utube. I also loved her in Young At Heart ❤️
Pure class.
Beautiful woman and total class. Even at 5:04 when Steve Allen shows no class and answers "4 beats" after Mike asks "How long did the beatings last." It was obvious she didn't appreciate the lame joke, but her class took over.
She was only 53 years old here! ☮️💟☮️💟
Looking fabulous!
Loved Doris Day
I love her voice.
For some reason, Interviewers always want to give Doris Day a Hard Time, when Interviewing her. Barbara Watters did the same thing.
I love Doris, but Doris is a lot like Ann Margret, very reserved and so private,it makes one ask,why do an interview or even go on any show at all?
The interview started off almost creepy but ended up heartwarming and sweet, weird lol
Still adorable
Didn't miss it, but the book ensured that she got the much needed money to live.
So when Mike couldn't get a definitive answer about the girl next door, he quickly changes his question to...can we talk about your 3 husbands? Uh!...NO Mike, can we ask you about your sex life instead? Talk about none of your business mindless questions...
I have adored Miss Day for a very longtime and her songs were so sugary sweet! The "Girl next Door" possibly started from the Hayes Code era meaning"Decent, bashful and VIRGIN" until married. Don;t make me laugh...You would be surprised what people say and do behind closed doors. Past, present and at this very moment..
Gigi Du Hermoine Have you heard of the 'space' key? Sheesh.
Doris Day was my childhood idol. (63 years ago) she is still an inspiration, even after death which was devastating. My grief is into the second year. I love her to pieces. Rest In Peace sweet lady. 💖💖💖💖
I know exactly how you feel, Jan. Doris Kappelhoff Day, we salute and thank you for ever, forever and ever! 💙❤️💕🌸☀️🌲💕💗🙏🏼☮️🐕🐶💚
Doris Day was pure class. There is no one in 2023 who even remotely comes close.
Absolutely!
I'm so happy that Mike made her sing. That was amazing that it actually made me cry. I miss her.
Me too!
@@rickhatch1
And me three! ❤❤
And she delivered in style!
Oh my God, I love this woman!!!! Hollywood will never be like this again!
You are totally correct.
There are no real stars left!
I came here from a 1974 Carson Show interview. She told Johnny she did not want to sing and he respected wish and told her he would not put her in that position, considering the audience was obviously up for it. To have Mike Douglas, who she knew as a singer in the business, find a gentle way to encourage her to sing, after answering painful questions about her life, was priceless. I don't know how many appearances on her book tour she had already made talking about those painful periods in her life, but she seemed to be making a Herculean effort to hold it together and respond to the questions. Thank you Steve Allen for the occasional joke and light momentary change of pace during her interview. Job well done. Rest in peace gentlemen and rest in peace Miss Day. You got this old dude in tears and you have given me closure, hearing you singing, here, Sentimental Journey. May your Journey be a blessed one.
Even only talking her voice is sublime. What a classy lady!
Doris is so gorgeous and wonderful! I'm still smiling after the end of the interview. Loved the "Sentimental Journey" duet with Mike Douglas!
Doris Day was the real deal. Style, personality and great talent will be missed.
She outlived them all. Her faith sustained her. Love you Doris.
What she says at 6:10 is so smart. She was so cool. She had her own life to live and enjoy and she didn't need the spotlight anymore.
I am 23 years old and I greatly appreciate Doris Day as an awesome singer and a divine actress. Boy! I wish I was around at the time Doris was touring as a singer.
One classy lady. She will be truly missed. May she rip.
I get the feeling dear Doris Day was irritated by the crass Hollywood machine. Her wonderful film with Cagney, Love Me Or Leave Me, seemed closer to the truth, about showbusiness reality...
My father must enjoy her company he's also passed away.
When Doris started singing.........it is like magic, everything illuminates around her, what a wonderful talented & nice person she is...
She was so encouraging. What a beauty in form and spirit!
Her fashion sense was timeless beautiful woman
What a lovely woman. I knew she was an amazing singer, talented actress, and gifted film comedienne. I didn't know she was such a lovely lovely woman.
What a beautiful lady!
Such a gorgeous soul with a beautiful energy...not to mention a truly amazing voice!
I remember Che Sera Sera as a child...Our mom would sing it around the house all the time.
We love you Doris! Thank you...
We enjoyed “The Doris Day TV Show” and your many movies!
You will be missed and there will never be another one like you!
You were a legend!
“Gonna take a sentimental journey” ... one of her best - wow!
RIP Doris.
I love Doris. She's one of my favorite performers and her voice is wonderful.
Miss Doris Day seems like Joan of Arc in this interview but fully capable of standing up for herself.
The men are interrogating her!
Miss Day was a pillar of strength to endure. She made pu/yof them
Steve Hinnenkamp z
You mean "is"
Unfortunately, "was" is now correct
As long as I can remember I have ALWAYS wanted to be Doris Day, I'm almost 70. I didn't know until yesterday how much we have in common, my first husband was an abuser and I had my son he started abusing him, God gave me the strength to knee him where it hurts, two of my brothers came for me and he left and I was a freed victim. My son and I are best buddies. We survived. But I adore her and still want to be like her. God bless you sweet Doris I am so sad. Thanks for the memories😟💕👏 I'll love you forever and always
Thank you, Howard! She was SPECIAL beyond words!
Doris is very spiritual and I never knew this. In that extreme competitive arena, her attitude is so refreshing and probably helped her through those hard times. Thanks for posting this. She's had many ups and downs but keeps optimistic! Norm "it's good to have a round bottom" that's a classic!!!
Dancingkay is my
I just love her! She's so awesome! Mike should have been the only one to interview. The guy on the end cut mike off when he was asking her a question. She is so sweet and loves life. I love that mike got her to sing with him! That was extra special in the interview💜💙💜
Boy Mike Douglas really didn't have any tact here - cringey. Love Doris so much.
Yes, it is cringey.......but the truth is that she was on the show to plug her book which was full of sadness and tragedy, and all kinds of tough stuff. So poor Mike was in a rough spot......to help her sell her book and still treat her kindly. I'm glad I didn't have to do it.
@GENERAL DISARRAY'S BOSS 83 I'm very sorry if I offended you in some way. Please forgive me. I love Doris Day and respect her. Classy, strong, brave, good lady. AND so wonderful in speaking for and doing work for better lives for animals. Again......I'm sorry if I upset you or offended you.
@GENERAL DISARRAY'S BOSS 83 Very sweet of you to reply. Best wishes to you!!
@@ginnylorenz5265 Yes, except that her book didn't get plugged. I felt like she was ambushed and I was genuinely embarrassed for her. 'Sentimental Journey' over her protests - it seemed that it was so that Mike could hear his own voice. Fortunately Steve was there to smooth things over a bit.
They gave Doris a lot of sad questions to answer in this interview, were they trying to make her cry?
If life is a chore the questions must fit the life. Sad life, sad questions. Day had a mix of both. If they just did happy questions, the interview would be very short. 3-22-2022
She was a comforting presence in her films and I loved the way she got indignant with Rock Hudson in films.
what a great interview...Saw aspects of Doris' character and personality I' d not seen before
The Osmonds, Joan Rivers, and Debbie Reynolds were also wiped out financially and had to begin all over again. Loved watching Mike Douglas before Merv Griffin and Phil Donahue. He was great to see after school!
She seems to be getting very irritated by Mike's questions, and I don't blame her.
Sometimes people should not be interviewers. Or maybe before the cameras were rolling she gave him a knuckle sandwich.
she is an American Treasure !...how many boys in WW2 listened to her and got by with what they had to do ? I admire her for her talent, humility and faith ! God Bless
My Dad was in World War 2. He said so many homesick guys were lifted up by her song of Sentimental Journey.
Awe this woman was lovely through and through, the epitome of femininity, graceful and divine, grounded and humble. They just don't make 'em like that anymore!
What a tense, awkward interview...Kudos to Doris for holding her own among these 3 male interviewers...
It seems Mike Douglas was not a good interviewer.. at least not in this episode, the interview with Doris seems rather like a cross examination than a casual interview, and the guest (Day) feels not at ease, critical for a good casual TV interview; Not to mention the other two co host which makes it look like a trial.
This was a terrible way to interview someone, feels like an interrogation
You have to interrogate some celebrities in order to get any information out of them!
Yes and no.
@@jackanthony976 True.
A classy lady deserves a classy interviewer.
Another fabulous outfit!
God... I just love her fashion sense 👍
Can anyone resist loving this ever so lovely lady?!
eoselan7 no, I’d love to have met her....😢
She was certainly humble, very gracious, & a very forgiving person, who happened to be very talented!
Rjoette Squire and she could dress She's the reason why I love yellow pant suits
Get a life will ya?
what a great women she was,you don't quite see actresses like that anymore.
you see Merryl Streep whose so full of herself Auugh! Doris trusted the Lord. She always gave good vibe.
I love Doris Day AND Meryl Streep. You don't have to put one down to lift up the other.
I used to like Meryl Streep but she has become really full of herself and way too political. Hollywood people don’t speak for me!! Unless it’s Clint Eastwood, a friend of Doris’s.
@@rhondablack8079 how does being political lessen her acting capabilities??
She has always been one of my hero's [Shee-ro's?]. She's such a treasure! If I'd known where she lived in Carmel, when I lived in the area, I'd have serenaded her on her Birthdays, too.
Most gals do _NOT_ "make edgy choices"; gals too often get conned into relationships they don't recognize as dangerous; girls are taught to trust and keep trying...even still, even when they are being badly abused or taken advantage of.
That 'taking advantage of', is _not_ restricted to the rich and famous.
Media keeps promoting "the girl next door" image of innocence; any average "girl next door", has brimming-platefuls of their own troubles, which they dutifully strive to keep quiet.
Doris worked very hard to make her life work well, as so many do, despite their troubles.
That is _GRACE under-fire_.
She's a wonderful role model. Grew up with her singing on the radio; her singing helped my Mom survive.
I was so in love with Doris Day...She's beautiful inside and out. Steve Allen? well this is what happens when you have two talk show hosts on one show.
Doris Day is one of my all - time fav' female personalities . Loved her from the first time i heard her , and still do . From a U.K. fan . God bless Doris Day .
I have found most people find her style passe today ...I hate the word classy ,but here it applies ..But she is all and more of what we all aspire to be in our best selves . What a great lady. I adore her attitude , he voice , and more than that she is such a funny actress .Just the most adorable and most natural comedian ( aka Strait Girl). She makes you feel she dose not know about life when she's acting .It's so believable . I think that's why no no took her acting seriously ( She's that good at acting ) ..but in life no one knows how much she really knows . We are very lucky to have had her in our time . I will always cherish her humor , taste , movies and singing . Bravo Doris !!!
Fortunately I'm old enough to remember her in her prime. When I was in my 20's I thought she was wonderful and at 85 I still do! A real lady not like some of the so called 'stars' of today. She always conducted herself with such class- a real lady! Passe or not I'd take any of her songs or pictures over any of the rubbish thats churned out today, I totaly agree with you about her acting, so understated and believable.
Love her outfit and it is 2019, how classy she was
There is this definitive version of Day's Sentamental Journey on RUclips, undoubtedly from either her 1971 or 1975 television special. Its sultry, minimalist - with a Peggy Lee quality to it. There is also of version of the Streisand classic Memories which Day delivers with photographs of her favorite leading men playing behind. That woman truly was one of the greats of the 50's 60's and 70's.
she is the epitome of HEALTHY!!! look at her here in her 50's!!! AMAZING!!!
She has always been my favorite actress.
R. I. P. Doris Day❤️
When I watch this , and she answers, I feel like I have known her for years. I feel part of her world. isnt that silly ? I havent even met her in person or had the chance to write to her .Now I have the internet I can watch these lovely interviews and smile with warmth that she gives out in the millions .
God! I love Doris Day!
She is a true Icon! A true legend!
I still tear up knowing that she is not with us.But I still watch her movies and The Doris Day Show and anything she has done.
RIP Doris! 🙏❤
Me too !!!!
I think this is my fav DD interview - especially as she sings at the end - RIP angel. x
One of the big stars of all time. A wonderful singer. A first rate comedienne and a very good dramatic actress as well. She brought happiness to millions and will be doing that forever.
She was the best!
She only very recently passed away. Such a lovely voice and person.
Mike made this interview very uncomfortable for her.
Yeah, and I think Steve did too.
I never did care for Steve Allen...he's too silly...
more of an interrogation than an interview no wonder she didn't do interviews often. A lovely sweet lady.
Wow he got Doris Day to sing. That was a real accomplishment because she would never do that again.
They could have sung a duet! Mike Douglas could sing.
It's Doris' attitude that has pulled her through. What a lovely, talented lady!
I think Doris Day was a classy lady and beautiful. I loved her outfits on her show..A loving person. I will miss her
