I know im dropping comments on some real old videos here, but i just want to say thank you Derek, for the crazy effort you've put into all these videos, not only fixing up and driving these old rigs all across the country, but taking the time to show us all the cool things along the way like this car museum. Youre my favorite fella on youtube Derek still to this day. I hope some day to win an old rig specifically that Duster from you, even though im in Canada. My uncle had a 74 before he passed and i really want to find one someday to honor him and what he did for the car community in my province back in the day. I love everything you do Derek, thank you again. Huge motivator.
Overheating on the highway usually means radiator is clogged. Ram air cools engine at speed, fan cools at idle/low speeds. Place your hand on the cooling fins down low and see if it’s cool, while the top area is hot. Pump blades may be rusted off, causing lack of flow. Seeing the freeze plugs missing, makes me wonder about the condition of the pump blades.
Gotta love it when someone starts to pass you then drops back for a better look before continuing on. I get where you're coming from on procrastinating--sometimes, when you care about the car, you don't want to start figuring out what's wrong because you just don't want to see it like that.
A fella wishes he found this channel a whole lot sooner I would love to see how it all started and what fella was thinking thank you so much for the videos and content and may god bless you and the family Derek

You can hear the frustration in your voice in many parts of the video. The reason is because that car is very special to you and there is a respect you have. It’s your memories of the past with your dad and you are keeping it alive. That car is beautiful.
I had a 1953 chevy bel air that was the same yellow and white as your buick was originally. It also had a vapor lock problem. An old mechanic gave me this trick. Clip several wooden spring clothespins to the fuel line right there where you were pointing. I don't know why this worked.. but it did. I never had another problem with vapor lock.
Thats I am doing always in good old Europe. Driving around Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, Austria, Italia, France, Bohemia and other places with an Classic Mercedes W124. Its a lot of fun.
Brother, we stumbled onto your channel about a month ago and we are hooked. You are such a joy to watch. If Johnny Carson was alive and saw your channel - he would have had you on the tonight show. You are that hilarious. I have learned a lot of good mechanic tips from you and you keep me laughing with the descriptions of tools, auto parts, and procedures. Thank you.
I can see why you love Buicks so much, the childhood thing. That's really great man.Its touching to see the humanness in you. I love Buicks too I have owned two different. Ones ,A 1970 Skylark and a 83 Buick regal which I adored. I'm on the lookout for another one.
My Dad had a 56 Buick Special. 2 tone green. He used a 180° summer thermostat & a 195° winter thermostat. He never had overheating issues. We even pulled an old homemade holiday trailer that was very heavy. He drove about 50-60 mph on the hiways. Maybe slow down & enjoy the scenery. Vapor lock was a bit of an issue too. An electric fuel pump will help that a lot. He used to get about 22-24mpg hiway. About 15mpg around town. The old cars were designed to go about 60mph on the hiways. Nice road trip I'd like to make some time.
Perfect music choice for the road sequence after sundown! The difficulties just add spice to the trip. Man of your talents will make it home. Not sure how long it will take, but I know you will make it. Good stuff and you never disappoint. I make the same face when I hear certain four bangers revving. No hate towards the four cylinder bunch, just there is a difference between cool and annoying.
Well, if there's something I've learned from watching Derek is to go get a classic car and go drive through the backroads. There's too many awesome things out there to see.
Doesn’t even have to be a classic car. I plan on doing a trip from NC to Las Vegas, including historical Route 66, in a 2003 Camry. All backroads if I can help it. IDC how long it takes. 👍🏻

Man this is the best story ever... Thank you for posting it. I traded the 70 Chevelle (4-door) that my Dad bought for me from his best friends family after his BF died for my Mom's kid hauler van that my Dad also bought just before he died 17 years ago. I lost the Chevelle after my Mom traded it to a guy for work on her home but I still have the van and my Dad's 94 Toyota pickup. That Chenille only had 60k miles on it. Broke my heart to trade because that was the car My Dad bought for us to restore together. Now I'm trying to keep his other vehicles going....Thanks for telling this story.
I couldn’t find it, my assumption is time just ran out and he had to fly home and either come back for the car or had it shipped home. He said it was near thanksgiving and Derek is a family man so it makes sense to me that he prioritized on that
Had experience with the split race ball bearings om the front end of my 55 Chevy years ago. They require frequent maintenance intervals, and need to be kept properly adjusted. In my case the simple fix was swapping on a pair of mid-60s tapered roller bearing hubs. I do not know if there is anything like that available for the Buick or not. The tapered roller bearings are just about bullet proof compared to the old ball design. These old cars will run at modern traffic speeds, but maybe you shouldn't, they are over 60 years old after all. Kudos on the trip!

Oh man!! I have been looking forward to this part 2!!
Precision Transmissions here on RUclips can rebuild the dynaflow ....
I bet Richard would do a great job on it.
Hopefully Derek sees this
Yes!! Richard is a fucking wizard. Seriously a master
@@deeplyclosetedindividual
That would be nice, it could be rebuilt while he waits and video records it. Now that would be interesting...
Only problem is that’s a little far, they’re up in amarillo, awesome guys though
Gotta love it when someone starts to pass you then drops back for a better look before continuing on. I get where you're coming from on procrastinating--sometimes, when you care about the car, you don't want to start figuring out what's wrong because you just don't want to see it like that.
If you're ever in upstate ny, check out the Northeast Classic Car Musium in Norwich. Definitely a hidden gem.
A fella wishes he found this channel a whole lot sooner I would love to see how it all started and what fella was thinking thank you so much for the videos and content and may god bless you and the family Derek
It's feelings are hurt, Derek. You'll work out your differences.
I appreciate the good content and all the work that goes into making a smart guy sound slow. Much luv to VGG.
Was 2 1/2 hrs into a 4 hour dig for a starter on a BMW E46 today, and thinking... "A guy could lose his mind doing this stuff." :) Enjoying your work. Gets me thru the day!
"YOU JUST EXPLORE THE COUNTRY IN A CLASSIC CAR." Man i haven't laughed that hard in awhile. Love the channel and the genius work you do!
Thank you.
Welcome aboard! Thanks for the kind words
@@ViceGripGarage If you had a t-shirt that states : "Vice Grip Garage Terminology" - I would buy one. XXL please !
@@ViceGripGaragecan’t seem to find part 3 just found the channel n lovin it 😊
The road trips with the music make it all worth it, because we know it all hangs by a thread and can come to a halt at any time.
Thank you kind lady. Glad Oklahoma showed you some love. Go Pokes!
Man I do love these adventures one of the better channels on RUclips!!
That music is sad. R. I. P to loved ones lost this year
Love the music you're playing on this adventure kind of music I really like to drive to
I can see why you love Buicks so much, the childhood thing.
Really like these videos.. Was a part 3 ever made that gets Derek and this car home? If there was, I can't find it.
Same. He may have a pay section (members only) with part 3. I couldn't find it either...
Thanks Bill
I agree with music choice. All of his videos have excellent music.
My Wife and I have been watching this program for a while now. one of the best video programs ever. we like the finger displays and sometimes do it ourselves. We watched recently that you moved to Tenn. We travel to fla in the winter and one year went to tenn. great state, we ended up in severville, during a car meet there. We also like the idea of your wife helping you bleed the brakes, We do the same I'll say down then up, then after a while she will say "I'm getting a pedal" keep up the good work
Man this is the best story ever...
I am loving these episodes. You should do road trips more often,
Maybe! Just really time consuming
Where is part 3?
I couldn’t find it, my assumption is time just ran out and he had to fly home and either come back for the car or had it shipped home. He said it was near thanksgiving and Derek is a family man so it makes sense to me that he prioritized on that
Must be hard to find but I did just watch part 3
It's called "Will this old Chevy truck pull my classic Buick 650 miles home?"
Love all of your families shows. Brings cheer .🇦🇺👍🇺🇸
Lord Help; All us Folks that Love to See U Tackle a Problem Saw You Go"Down to the Mat" with the Buick in Part 2.
