- The history of D&D from war and dark rituals to self-destruction and pop culture icon. Learn about the history of Dungeons and Dragons and why it has become so popular over the last 50 years. From its origins to its cultural impact, discover why DND has captured the hearts of so many fans!
During the pandemic, Dungeons & Dragons saw a meteoric rise in popularity. Join me, a seasoned Dungeon Master and industry insider, as we explore the incredible journey of D&D, from its origins in historical war games to becoming a beloved pop culture phenomenon.
How did Dungeons and Dragons prevail against all odds to become something we consider pop culture? In this video we take a deep dive into its historical roots that were inspired by the battles of old times. We see how Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson revolutionized gaming and shaped the modern tabletop role-playing experience. But we will also realise that the path of DND wasn't without struggles and especially in the 80s the perseption of the game was way more than just controversial. We also dive into the 2023 OGL controversy and how the D&D community's response shaped the future of the game.
I'll also share one of my personal adventures as a Dungeon Master and offer insights on how to explain D&D to newcomers. Whether you're a veteran player or new to the world of tabletop RPGs, this deep dive into D&D's history and cultural impact is for you!

Ah, it's just great to talk about passion. 😄 What was your first or best experience with D&D? 🎲
Great video! I really like how you added a lot of nuance to it, and not just saying "DnD is popular now because of Stranger Things and Hasbro tried to take back the OGL because of money" like so many creators do these days.
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it!
Ultimately, it is something that was created from a hobby and it still is just that - a hobby that many of us love to indulge in. And D&D wouldn't be where it is now were it not for all those that came before us, the current pioneers and even us that made it what it is today.
Absolutely brilliant video! Sad that your channel being new will mean it's reach is limited...for now. Here's to the next one, and the one after that!
Thank you so much for your kind words! Well, it surely won't be the last! Videos like this just take some time. 😊 See you in the next one!
Well made Video.
You will blow up soon.
Thank you very much! Feels good to be discovered and that you liked the video!
Very well put together! Looking forward to seeing more from you!
Thanks a lot! Don't worry, next is in the making and plans for many many more were made. 😄
While none of the information here was new to me (I've been playing D&D almost since the beginning, making my first character in1982), it was well presented and entertaining to watch. Good job on your first video!
Thank you very much! Glad you've still enjoyed it although the story was familiar. 😊
I'm curious, what did you enjoy the most about the older editions and what was that first character if I might ask?
@@cyriliantales Honestly? I was 7 and I don't remember much beyond "This is so cool!" 🤣 My first character was a Halfling Thief who really wanted a magic sword and a ring of invisibility. I had just read "The Hobbit" and it made a pretty big impression on young me.
@@scatterbug Oh wow, that was quite the early introduction to D&D then! Props to whoever introduced you to it!
Well, if I'd come from reading one of Tolkien's books I'd probably have ended up playing a character of that universe as well. Hope you found that ring and could celebrate your 111th birthday! 🤣
