John Deere 420 Classic Garden Tractor Snow Plowing 12 17 2020

  • This is a quick video of me plowing my 1500' long and steep gravel driveway with my classic John Deere Model 420 Garden Tractor. It works well except it's weak point is traction. Even with chains it struggles a bit in this steep environment. And the front tires skid out with only a little side force from an angled plow and a heavy snow load. If you like this video, be sure to check out my Honda Pioneer 700 snow plowing video to get the current status of my JD420 tractor. It's not pretty.
    Steve.

    At the start of winter, before the ground is frozen, I add a PVC pipe (split lengthwise) and inserted into the bottom of my snow plow.
    This way, the gravel has less tendency to mix with the snow and remains more on the ground.
    Once the bottom layer is frozen, I remove the pipe for the rest of winter.
    This avoids finding kilos of gravel in the ditch the following spring.

      great tip....bet it also makes for an extremely smooth drive way...looks wise it's probably fantastic, traction wise, you probably want to run tire tread pattern all over it and spray it with hot water hmmm? well if anything it will be level!

    you need the front wheel 25#cast weights and the heavier 75# each or double plate up the rear wheel #50 plate weights or throw on a rear 3 point weight hitch or rear rock box. your other problem is your tire tread pattern, the original tires were great traction wise, the turf savers are designed to allow more slip to stop grass from being torn out, the next tread pattern below that is the garden dirt tread, and the next below that is the smooth ribbed tires. you want to install the new gator/4 wheeler tires or at the least the turf master tires with more tread biting edges. but really you just need about 100# more weight over the front wheels with turf savers and #200 more over the rears. upgrading to a more aggressive tread pattern decreases the amount of weight required by 50%. another thing i noticed is that my 445 AWS has F 6x7.5x8 & R 23x10.5" wide tires vs the front wheel steer only being 26" which is closer to your 24". the newer X series is alot heavier, but the AWS require narrower tires to be able to use that AWS action more contact with the ground equals greater stopping power but with out enough weight you float ontop of water&snow with out getting direct wheel contact with the ground thus greatly reduced traction, so more weight is the only answer until you compact the snow and water out of the way due to greater gravitational pressure due to weight forcing contact.
    another option would be to dual rear wheel hub your machine. that's how they do it at tractor pulls.
    tires matter, the turf savers will not hang a hill worse than your driveway that i mow, and put them on a stand up zero turn they don't hang any kind of slope, and lose traction trying to go up slight rises in a lawn even with a ton of weight on them. those are the economy tires made specifically for the cheap tin can tractor mowers or trailer/wagons and i see a turf saver on your front right, and you wonder why you can steer when you start immediately cranked hard all the way.
    i have a H3 140 and i love the left and right brakes as i can turn almost on a dime on iced up ground. i am talking a full 180 turn in about 1/5th the time it takes you just to turn your wheels hard right. that's what these brakes were designed for in snow and in dirt row cropping.
    your plowing technique needs work also. you know you're getting a ton of snow. we have been spoiled by the st helens eruption and it takes weather patterns 50 years just to get back to normal after an eruption according to geology for the last 4.5 billion years of earths history. the Hawaiian volcano also helped cause the drought, as evidenced this year in the midwest once again constant flow eruption changes jet streams as 4,500º molten rock heats up more of the air and earths surface faster than all of man kind combined for our entire history past and a good ways into our future.
    i suggest you start using the angle on the blade and start on the inside of your hill and push it out towards the drop, the faster you can go, the faster the snow will fly off the blade, i know you're trying to conserve gravel, but if that's your concern you should lift the blade up a finger width on the way down, and then you can push what remains against the uphill side with the blade down. it will also be easier to push that slight half inch remaining towards the hill with your traction issue.
    also stop getting class 5, next spring peel all that class 5 back high up onto the hill and get the rail road sized rock 1/2 fister stones, roller pack them, with a vibrator if you can and throw your class 5 back down on top and save more gravel with better traction. more snow will be allowed to penetrate deeper and refreeze thus locking your material together. this is how i built the power line roads from maine to niagra and from niagra to NYC thru the mountains for my dads company when they were creating the u.s. power line grid for the niagra mohawk sections.
    trenton falls new york, foot hills of the adirondaks over utica 1/3 of a mile long drive way over 3 creeks bridges around one pond and up hill grade about the same as your middle but at the top of my drive for the last 400 yards or so with that 140 H3 and the snow blower. 16"-2 feet 2-3x a week thanks to lake erie and ontario. so much frostbite i can get my hand chopped up or smashed and it doesn't hurt much.

    I used to run a tractor without a cab I was running an 80" blower on that unit and finally one year I had enough and put a cab on it and would never even consider running without a cab and heat! The last two week here we have gotten 25 plus" of snow along with 40 mph winds and temps at night down to -31 and some days highs of -12 and I blow my warehouse, my house and shop and my lake house I will be in the tractor anywhere from 60 to 70 hours each winter. I would die on you plow!

      I have a 420 and a 430 and they are both amazing machines. You're gonna love that 420 when it comes to snow removal. I've wanted a 318 ever since I got my first 140. The 400 series are such big tractors that I think the 318 would be a nice addition to the herd. I have 4 of the 140s in various levels of disrepair at the moment and I plan to put them up for sale one of these days. The 140 is by far the best looking garden tractor they ever put out IMHO and wow what a machine that is too! But once I tasted that hydraulic power steering of the 420, there was no turning back - lol! So yeah, time to let someone else enjoy them. I think the 420 and 430 are all the tractor I'm gonna need with what time I have left - lol. You should be getting some use out of that 420 by now. I'll be heading out to plow in an hour or so myself. Enjoy and stay warm.

      Hi Tee Jay. They are great machines. Unfortunately, this fall the rodent population got into my 420 and built a nest underneath the air cleaner right into the point and breakers. I cleaned it out as best I could but my baby just wont start. I'm thinking of sending it out for professional repair. I have too many other tasks to deal with it right now. I'm glad that I have the SXS to get me through the winter.
      Take care, Happy Holidays!

    Beautiful place. Love it. I had a lot of experience blowing and moving snow before moving to warmer climates. Doing either, blading or blowing up a hill is futile with these things. Did you have the diff locked when you pulled out of the barn? I've never seen the front wheels skid that bad. But if the diff lock is in the lock position, it won't want to go straight in snow. Or even wet grass. An issue with plows is if enough snowfalls over the season, you soon run out of space to put the stuff. Your driveway keeps getting narrower with each snowfall.

    • @stevenbarnesvermontfishing520
      @stevenbarnesvermontfishing520  2 года назад +1

      Hi Joe. Thanks for the comments. My rear diff is open until I press a button on the right side floor pan. The front tires do slide easily, perhaps because I have 300 lbs of extra rear weight that provides rear wheel traction but unweights the front end. So it's a good thing that I can apply the rear brakes individually. That's a feature that I wish my Honda Pioneer SXS had. That one is locked full time and it will tear up my lawn.
      Enjoy life, Steve.

    Nice video. Looks like you have no traction issues with the tractor. Is that dirt drive way or asphalt? Do you think diff lock is necessary for snow blowing with jd tractor (like 200-300 series one). TIA!

    • @stevenbarnesvermontfishing520
      @stevenbarnesvermontfishing520  2 года назад +1

      It is a gravel driveway. The need for a diff lock depends on some factors, like how level and smooth the area is that you want to plow, and the consistency of the snow/ice. I will tell you this, there would have been several times when I would not have made it up my driveway without diff lock. When it gets real icy you need both wheels driving, and chains of course.

    • @kokyaw
      @kokyaw 2 года назад

      @@stevenbarnesvermontfishing520 thanks. Really helpful. Sound like diff lock is useful. My asphalt driveway was recently repaved, so it is quite smooth. I do plan to get the chain, wheel weights or ballast or both, and also suitcase weights. We do get a good amount of snow here in southern MA (but nothing like up there in VT). In your opinion, I should get the diff lock?

    • @jaceb7136

      @Kyaw Zeyar Myint with chains and weights on a flat driveway you should've have an issue honestly. No need for the locker unless you are on a muddy/gravel driveway or if you are plowing up hill or pushing really heavy and tall snow. Best of luck

    I've always wanted to try this; make a loop of chain just slightly smaller then the circumference of the front tire. Deflate the tire, and roll the chain on from the side. Re-inflate the tire. Surely that would help it from sliding sideways.

    • @wannabejeeper
      @wannabejeeper 2 года назад

      Normal link chain I'd say. Size is up to you. Use an add-a-link. Tighten the heck out of it. Got a link as to where this has been done?

    • @jaceb7136

      That's how we usually do it on our rigs, and yes it does prevent it from sliding side to side but I still recommend the bungee cords on each side of the rims on the drive wheels
