I just wanted to share this with you:
I quit doing Resolutions many years ago and The Drummer and I adopted a different plan which has been awesome for us. Instead of making resolutions, we choose subjects to study and new skills to learn! For one year.
I usually pick a country or world area to study, for sure. Because I was really stupid in this area. Once I did the Middle East; once it was the Scandinavian countries, etc. This year I picked Russia. There is so much online: movies, documentaries, lectures from the best universities and of course, the library. All free! I’ll study history, civics, food, art, government, fashion, music, culture, holidays, EVERYTHING about the country. Sometimes fiction books are a wealth of information. And there is a lot of great Russian literature. Maybe this will be the year I finally read Dostoyevsky!!! 😬Currently I know nothing at all about Russia except it’s communist, cold, and has the best caviar. 😂 Check back with me in a year! L O L.
I am always working on languages - Learning foreign languages is one of the very best things you can do for your brain, did you know that? Then I also learn a new skill. Some of them have been very wacky! Some of them have been very difficult. Last year I studied herbs and then followed the use of herbs in ancient times as medicine (that’s all there was!) all the way through to the first patented medicines and how our pharmaceutical companies became such tyrants. It was the most interesting one yet. And I grew a huge herb garden!
This year I am studying fermentation, and I’m going to learn how to ferment everything and become a master of sauerkraut and sourdough! (I also have been noticing a lot of videos about “slow stitching.“ I just love it and I’m definitely going to tackle that too.)
The last thing I do is to choose how many books I’m going to read in 2024 and post it on Goodreads. I try to rotate my reading through the genres because I have noticed so many people get stuck in one genre, like thrillers, or romances, etc. and so I deliberately rotate through history, fantasy, biographies, natural science, current popular fiction, the classics, etc. so I don’t get trapped in a box. I have discovered so many things I really like that I never would’ve known about. I actually really like reading natural science books! Last year I read a book about crows that blew my mind. (The Drummer read all the biographies/autobiographies last year about the women musicians: Stevie Nicks, Carly Simon, Patti Smith, Linda Ronstadt, etc. and he read Patti Boyd’s books, too. He likes pop biographies. And mafia stories lol.)
Together, The Drummer and I are going to be reviewing jazz! This is our very first joint study! He is a blues/funk/jazz guy and has been playing the drums for 40 years. He’s one of those who was just born gifted, while I studied music in college but I’m competent, not special, and I don’t perform. But he’s never attacked a music genre academically since college. So we got some great books on the history of jazz that we’re looking forward to doing together. And we’ll do lots of listening to the jazz and musicians we’re studying over dinners (cooking is a joint hobby.) Hopefully we will get to some great jazz shows this year and it will spark him to stretch himself a little on his instruments.
Sorry for that epistle. I hope it’s not boring. But besides music and fashion, I was wondering if you and Andrew have other hobbies together and if there’s anything you kind of wanted to learn about. It worked really well for me to pick a topic for the year. Some years I work really hard on the topic and some years I don’t. And next year… all new topics! Think how smart I’m gonna be when I die! LoL
