Not many people realize this but Phil is one of Neil Peart's favorite drummers 👍💕
even Peart admired Gould, for the simplicity that is far from simple
Who haven't heard for level 42 and Mark King?:)....yeah,Phis is phenomenal player!
I still use his hi hat pattern from Hot Water to this day. Phil Gould was a massive influence in my early 20s. Now 54.
Its the ghost notes he plays on that pattern. Check out hot water and the chorus on lessons in love. Watch his left hand. It’s outrageous! Love the channel, bro!
Phil Gould is top notch. He was definitely the guy I watched for that phenomenal groove.
Phil was one of my very first favorites. He and Jeff Porcaro. I always thought Phil or Vinnie would have been a great one to carry Jeff's torch.
First time I heard this groove was on Level 42s "Lessons In Love" in 1984. Simply the best.
I thought that was in 88?
Many years since I first came across what I used to call the Phil Gould reverse hi hat groove (1986). Really good that you have broken this down for me as never knew how to approach it. Also great to know people like yourself the other side of the pond having got into the Phil Gould/ Level 42 sound. All the best, Paul H (UK).
Level 42 is one of my favorite groups
Loved Phil’s drumming with Level 42. When people were rattling on about “the bass player in that band” I was the one pointing out just how steady and funky the drumming was. Was very lucky to meet Phil at a master class a couple of years ago and he is such a nice guy. Never meet your hero’s ? So glad I did
Thanks for turning me onto Level 42 🤘🏻🥁
Phil Gould absolutely One of the Best...
This Solo, his playing 1985 (1987), such Original and Great !
Phil Gould was so cool, man, I used to always dig his drumming when Level 42 used to be cruising on the charts. Somewhere in my storage space, among my stack of old MD magazines, I still have that issue with him on the cover. LOL!
"That is Why I Can't Walk You Home..."
Phil's such a badass!
THAT tune 😩🔥🔥🔥🔥
@@RobBeatdownBrown Now that I think about it, doesn't "Good Man In A Storm" use this groove at a slower tempo on the verses? Or is he doing the two instead of three on the hi-hat with that one?
Yess!!!!!!!!!!! a Very important Groove Element. It wakes up a Groove. Cheers.
used on hot water, lessons in love and you can't blame louis!
Phil Gould is an awesome drummer and so is the current drummer Pete Ray Biggen. Thanks for breaking this down. I have always wondered how Phil had such a nice groove to his playing.
Holy moly, that groove sounds good. I also love the fills in the intro
This groove makes made think of Phil's part on The Sleepwalkers, which I hadn't thought of in years! Thanks for that! Such a great track.
I knew you were the MAIN MAN. Loved Phil. Love his vibe, his swing, His delivery. What a guy.
"It could get you out of a traffic ticket" 😂😂😂
back in the late 80's i dug the shit out of their album world machine and was wayyyyyy impressed by the ability Phil had of holding the groove without doin crazy articulated fills and his highhat ghost notes
Phil's drumming in Level 42 was just brilliant! Thanks for bringing some attention to his awesomeness! ;-)
Agree 💯. Phil is my greatest funk groove type influence. Brit funk's finest.
Phil's triplet grooves are some of my favorites... Thanks Rob :)
YES! You are the first person that I have heard talk about Phil Gould. I loved Level42 when I was in Highschool. Their song Something About You has been a favorite of mine from the time I heard it. Gret video Rob and a most useful groove.
Love them PAISTES.. Great sound all around the kit!
Level 42 one of fav band of all time. Phil Gould one of fav drummers of all time. Great watch Rob. Thank you. 1 of my faves songs is Tracie. Phil's groove is awesome.
I think that song was actually Gary Husband on drums. From the album after Phil and Boon left the band.
@@craiglerwill8809 Gary Husband, another great drummer. The song "Man" would be a great breakdown.
Rob,love your passion for Mr Gould,I've watched your channel for years ( maximum thumperfacation ). Grew up here in the UK, listening to him n the band,I'm now 48,but,man you NEEEED TO meet him,do a session with him, cause he is amazing human being, please someone, get this to happen 🤞🤞🤞🤞,cheers Rob🙏
Level 42 are a great band. Phil Gould is a great drummer. Thanks for sharing this. Great information. Cheers, Rob! ✌️🥁
Rob, this is brilliant. Not sure if you recall but as a fellow Phil Gould fan, I asked you about this in your drummers hang in October '21! Just found one of my comments (referring to his use of it in Hot Water on the live album) when we talked about it at the time:
"It's on the physical presence album. But it's a very Phil Gould thing where he opens his hats mid groove in the sort of way you would play the hihat pedal on 2and4 when playing the ride"
Phil belongs in the Groove Masters Club with Purdie, Porcaro, and "JR"!!
You got that right!!!
Nice instructions. Ill give it a try. Nice kicks too!
Nice work, I haven't played in over 30 years. But still love watching Your videos. Thank You for what You do.
Belgium is here, Phil Gould doesn’t live too far away!
Love your videos. You’re the man. At 73 it’s more than I can do. But it’s something to work on. Thanks.
Man...this is a great upload...! Phil was an absolute beast 👏🏾..! Great he's being recognised as a top drummer.
That snare man!... 🔥
Level 42 also had the best bass player of the day. Note to self I have got to get myself some heavier stick. I keep forgetting.
Thanks for sharing. Happy Drumming!
Oooh Phil Gould grooves are the grooviest, and so are you! Now lead it with your left hand!
gettin' me out some traffic ticket...thanx Rob.
Thank you a lot Rob! Pure dope, as always. This is not a simple groove, but a musical vocabulary to add to our playing. Music oriented. Keep the great work Rob!!!
YES, YES & YES!!!!!
Love your channel Rob, I met Pastor Mike in Norman, OK. Know he's a big fan and has invited you to the area, c'mon down man...great video!
Snare is cracking! Love it! Best wishes from Croatia 🙏🏻🌈
Rob every time I watch you I always slam my left foot on the hi-hat ‘like’ button. And I mean I smash it hard. Thanks.
I've wanted to learn drums forever and I'm turning the keys over to Beatdown
Nice vid. However, I think Phil's left foot was playing 8th notes on the hi-hat. He played this pattern with triplets on Lessons In Love, Children Say, Fashion Fever, Hot Water and a few others. If you look on the Lessons In Love official video you can see his left foot 'bouncing', creating 8th notes during the chorus.
The boom crack thanks bro
Agree Rob,he was at his best on "live at Wembley" gig.
Great combination of a groove with a feet-lifting stomp along with the hi-hat swinging the arms in a “forward motion”. Level 42, four funketeers, relied on Phil and Boon being in the pocket with Mark and Mike; a great period of the band’s musical history and one which I also admire both live and on disc.
Aye!! Here we go! I love watching your videos. The style you implement is very inspiring!
-Indiana Love 💯🥁
Thank you Rob, a little hint with a great impact....and also nice to re-discover Level 42.
Love it!! Level 42 are OG's
I love your “play through the snare” technique. Do you have a video on this? Thomas Lang does this as well where he buries the stick rather than let it bounce.
Wednesday afternoon drum lesson from Rob. Thanks dude
Really cool. Sort of an inversion of the Blue Wind/Jeff Beck intro.
My first drum hero. Phil Gould. Unique!
Great breakdown, Rob ✌🏼
I'm really going to bear down on this because the last thing I need is another traffic ticket :O
That’s an excellent breakdown, great work and thank you 👍
Thanks man.
Thanks Rob … loved this one mate .. 🎶 🥁🇦🇺
Awesome groove
Thanks for reminding me of Level 42
Man I get the hi hat formula. But the fill in that pattern was tight!
Love it!
When I hear this groove, I thought of the chorus in "Lessons In Love"
Thanks!
Great video Rob. Being from the Isle of Wight I managed to purchase Phil’s old piano. Keep up the good work.
Nice little groove🤘🏻🥁
Ohhhhh you can vibe with this in a wedding
That grove kind of reminds me of the one you were playing at the beginning of your video - Can You Learn 'Pocket'?! 🤔 - 5 Tips For Better Groovin'
My band just recently started playing ,"Something About you" Level 42 drummer was tasty.
Yo check out jaki Liebezeit, all drummers need to know this dude, personally my favourite drummer of all time, and one of the least heard of, cheers Rob, love your channel, god bless ya
That snare
🙏🙏🙏🙏as always thank you
Cool groove man. I'm gonna have some fun with this one.
Thanks
I've made some progress after only at it for less than a month I dig this channel
Awesome grooving Rob
5:56 🔥👊🧡👍🔥 Sweet!
Nuggets of gold amigo
Como siempre
Fatale weap-on !! 🤩
I find it funny when you talk about as in counting. Phil's been playing triplets for years. (not having a dig btw). I asked him ages ago on facebook before I got hacked why he alternated between right and left hand playing. He said he'd play open handed when a song didn't have ghost notes (IIRC)
I'm not sure what drum track your playing of his on this. Is this his new album?
Lovely. A touch of Motown there ("pea-soup"). There's a lot to like about the simplicity, and it grooves because the hi-hat sort of anticipates the next downbeat giving the whole thing momentum. When are the signature shoes coming out?
Merci beaucoup
Christophe from France
I am sure you know Mark Craney with Gino Vanelli too. He was a master.
Woe Woe Woe - did you just say " or with the right foot if you're a left handed drummer"? Bro - thank you for saying that. As a left handed drummer I wish drum teachers would refer to the Bass drum or the High Hat rather than left or right foot in lessons.
Nice one. ✌️
My left foot is ALWAYS moving when drumming. Even if its not on the hi hat pedal. It just helps keep time.
When you play double kick drums do you lead with the left foot?
Me too so I have to move it on to the floor just to stop it being too repetitive
@@thomasdecorail8825 sometimes !
Are you leaving your stick on the snare head after every beat? Phil G is great by the way!
2 cymbal crashes on the a of 4 and the one. 💥
Play open handed, matched grip and buy a REMOTE HiHAT. Then play Phil's (or Rob's) beat here. SEE the greater difference immediately.
Phil Gould, ...one number comes to mind ..."43"! If you haven't heard that one, check it out! (Not you Rob, I know you've heard it) !
Yep.
Hell yeah, awesome track, fast paced song but implementing this groove so so well. Grew up with these guys from age of 12 now 48!! Seen all their drummer's on various tours .Much respect 😉
good
True Believers
Yes indeed.
Also Good Man in a Storm. Pretty much this groove.
Gary may be incredible, but he never really paid homage to Phil when it came to this particular pattern. Whereas Pete embraced it and took it to the next level
Rob questo l,ho visto fare anche a Pete Ray Biggin
Does the paint chip off those sticks?
