    Nice machine John. That tool staging area is nuts. On that large radial nest at the end, you should add a small relief to the center contact area. Maybe 30 degrees worth at .01 deep. if the stock is slightly smaller, you'll only have linear tangent contact. the relief forces 2 lines of contact at all times.

    Have you considered marking out the different areas in the tool changer with colored tape or paint to mark out the areas for the different types of bits?

    bottoming out tools is not good for the tool runout because when clamping the tool might get pulled in slightly and it will effect the runout :)

    Pro tip. At the 16:00 minute mark, you talked about stepping down, then over with 0.005” on the wall. This is a problem because as the tab gets thin, you’ll get a lousy surface finish. I suggest just stepping down in Z and no wall finish passes. You’ll be surprised how nice it turns out.

    You dont have to spot drill if you drill with carbide, because it breaks the edges off the carbide drill. But if you drill with HSS it's a must because the drill will wiggle and the position off the hole is shity.✌

    Just wondering why your not using carbide Drills? In most cases you wouldn't need to use reamers anymore and they just work so much better... and unless you smash them they're actually cheaper to run

    With some carbide drill designs there is really no need to spot with a separate tool. Sometimes for deep drilling it is good to come in and drill 1-3xD with a stub length and then bring out your longer drill, but not everything requires spotting.

    Scheduling: Do an evaluation about how long you think jobs will take. Put them in a spreadsheet. Put the actual completed time in another column. Calculate % error. You can plot distribution of error and jobs or, at least do an average of errors.
    Finally you can do an estimate and add in your average error and you'll have a better estimate of time. If you have really bad estimate, like it took 3 times, toss those data because it was a complete wrong estimate.
    I've seen a lot of people not include downtime. Machines don't run forever. Try to track downtime per job so you can add it to your job estimate.

    From what I understand, the ring on the inside of the collet nut is so that the collet can easily be extracted when you want to take it out. If that ring wasn't there it would be a nightmare to get the collet out of the mating taper, similar to why you need a tapered wedge to knock a Morse taper out of a drill press spindle.

    I’d have to disagree with Cat being the gold standard, I’ve worked in machine shops since finishing my apprenticeship, and I’ve never once come across a matchine using a Cat tool holder, they’ve all been HSK due to their superior holding ability at high speed taking big cuts.

    Altough I still to this day really really don’t get why you went with a Kern type of machine since it got ao many limitations for what you’re doing.... Hahaha. I would really invest and think about getting short holders. You really don’t need that long of a holder all the time, it obvious it gives a lot of total gage lenght issues for you atm. Loving the almost daily content dude. Slowlie but surely we will this machine make knives after knives after knives.

    Agree with whomever you were talking too. Ive never spotted a hole and I don't even use drill bits. Only interpolated endmill holes. Drills are for deep stock if you're making knife scales drilling isnt necessary. I use 3 sizes of ball mill and 3 sizes of normal endmills to make everything ive ever made and sold.

    ‘Gorilla Fab’ and ‘Moria’ should combine their CAT40 mounting tools into one tool! Use the Gorilla Fab tool as the base plate for the Moria tool and you have two ways to mount the CAT40 in one tool.

    I used a KanBan system for tool and work offsets. I have little laminated cards that are red on one side and green on the other, and they say "Tool Offsets Set/Not set" and "Work Offsets Set / Not Set" respectively. That way if I am interrupted mid-setup, I come back to visual indicators as to the machine status. I just stick them in pockets next to the cycle start button.

    John when milling on the Kern instead of flooding the part with coolant can you use a misting spray for cooling the process being worked on or is the speed the Kern operates at to fast and generates to much heat for a mist coolant?
    One of the reasons I asked is to see the machine working would be easier to film and for you to observe the program working especially with a new part you are manufacturing.

    Hey man as far as forgetting to touch off tools. I always set all empty tool lengths to 99.999 so if anything the tool is just way in the air. And as far as spot drilling goes if its a hss 118 degree its best to spot drill. If its 135 degree there is no need to spot. I always spot after to chamfer with 135 degree and it saves tool life of spot because your not machining with the point.

    On the topic of deadlines. Maybe setting goal dates would work better for you. The advantage of not having the stress in the shop, of deadlines. Is rather big IMO. You guys have what seems like a wonderfully low stress environment. Which is rare in many work places. So by setting dates you want to have goals achieved by, your not adding stress. If after 2-3 weeks of review or missing a goal then you can sit down and re-evaluate things. To go is this a viable, is it a pie in the sky dream, are we just pushing it off cause we dont have enough time or personnel.
    I suggest this, cause you see, very goal oriented by like you said, you know that a deadline in these situations is fake. Hope you find something that works for you :)

  • @xavtek

    Deadlines are just another challenge : you don’t know how to do something, you figure it out, and complete the challenge. Having a deadline is another dimension added to the challenge as now you have to make the problem solving fit in a time frame. You are very good at problem solving, taking on deadlines as another challenge should help !

    HSK IS has always more rigidity because it has side and Face contact and the (CAT) SK has only contact on the taper so the only real advantage of an (CAT) SK is that it is relatively cheap.

    • @dariuscastor2331
      @dariuscastor2331 4 года назад +1

      Yeah, but that’s only compared to equivalent size. Hsk 40e isn’t the same scale as cat40, so cat 40 is more rigid. Plus, the “e” type doesn’t have drive dogs, so it isn’t as suitable for stuff like boring bars and theoretically handles less torque.

    • @DeschampsPutters

      Big Plus has taper and face contact.

    • @PlinkingLePew
      @PlinkingLePew 4 года назад +3

      Biggest benefit to any hsk is its ability to handle much higher rpm. However hsk63 is much more rigid then standard cat40, and hsk100 is much more rigid then standard cat50. Cat40 bigplus evens the rigidity gap but the clamping mechanism still cant support the rpm ramge that hsk can.
