I took me 2 weeks to get a sound out of the clarinet but you are already out here playing full passages and some impressive notes
Emily Offner i had been playing before hand i was taking lessons and being more serious about it at that point
LMAOOOO it took me 1 minute to get out a full scale of notes my band director was like "what the heck"
omg same LOL
@@sseabass8469 same with sax
Not that impressive, sorry
I've been playing the clarinet for almost 8 years now and I must say that that's a lot of progress for only 2 years, especially your tone is better. Still there is much to do in order to get better at playing... I'd recommend to play some easier things and practicing some études they help a lot. But as I said, you are good for only playing for 2 years. I'd love to see another progress Video in the future. Nice one!
im 12 and ive been playin clarinet since elementry school
@@karmaccg8752 ok and?
@@Kyle-cr7ho wdym “ok and?” All they did was give a piece of information 😂
Shameful youve been playing for 8 n u couldnt notice the miniscule change in tone, PUFFING OF CHEEKS, and weak tounging and airsupport.
I hate everyone that comments about your cheeks and don’t give any advice to try to fix it.
Hold your cheeks with one hand and the mouthpiece and barrel with the other. Do articulation exercises with just MP and barrel, start with whole note then half, quarter, eighth. Let me know if it helps!
Btw, I’m so happy for you for sticking to the clarinet!!! Not a lot of ppl can stay true to something for as long as you did.
thank you so much lol. some people think its easy to just stop puffing your cheeks. Also these videos are pretty old and ive improved a lot since then
@@rileykeegan2005 I just started playing and I do not puff my cheeks ..The first video I watched on how to play said to kinda smile with the edges of your lips turned up . I think if you do that your cheeks don't puff ? Louis Armstrong puffed his cheeks so who says you are not supposed to ;-) haha..Anyhow you play really well good for you !
@@lindamorgan2678 i think it varies from person to person, i never puffed my cheeks and it took me less than 6 months to get as perfect of embouchure as you could expect, I struggled more with my note articulation than I did my tone, I ended up getting an award my first year for most improved and was dominating first chair by the end of the year.
@@lindamorgan2678 I think part of it is just the shape of someone’s mouth, some people have to work harder than others though it’s not impossible. I had a tendency to be too tight on the mouth piece, you definitely don’t want that. It’s been over 15 years since then, and I gave my clarinet to my nephew but I’m getting a new one soon.
@@lindamorgan2678 but you definitely shouldn’t be puffing your cheeks, the only time that might be acceptable is if you are holding air in your cheeks to play longer than you normally would but that’s advanced stuff. You wanna be loose, but not that loose you have to have your mouth in a good position. You want all your air being directed through the clarinet.
Also you’re better than literally most of the people in my grade who have been playing for as long as me which is like 3-4 years
bruh moment
What grade is he ?
practice i bet
do ppl in ur band puff their cheeks as well when playing
That’s nice bro! But I’m a bit disappointed for the air in your cheeks
same
same
@@mozeay8415 what do you mean?
@@mozeay8415 😬 you wouldn’t like me playing then
Air in the cheeks isn’t that the basics lol it was da first thing I learned
!
thats high key a W, i've been playing clarinet for like 7 years now and stopped getting tutoring after like 3 years and basically barely improving which each year passing by. Today, I dont regret anything, although not improving, playing the clarinet doesn't feel like a chore (unless its for band stuff and band rehearsals, that shit got me tired af), its cool to see someone make sm progress in such a short amount of time
did I hear correctly!!!! You are playing over the break notes after you FIRST MONTH... boy oh boy are you AWESOME!!!!!
I didn't start playing over the break notes until I was almost 2 and a half years in!!!!!! GREAT WORK
They are not that hard you just gotta push yourself to do it.
Thank you for sharing your journey! As a lockdown/retirement mini project at age 67 I bought a clarinet for $40 off eBay. I thought I’d have fun getting to work. But it works perfectly fine and with the encouragement of a video like this, books and video clips, I’m very happy with the sound I get. There will be lessons. I liked your progress and was just so pleased at the Mozart piece which I aspire to. You have good tone and you’ve won the battle with the higher register! Well done and good luck for the future.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💪
Ok he did not play that high at one month like wtf
That's exactly what I'm thinking.
i played those in two weeks
That’s awesome!!!! 🥳🥳
hey let me ask something why do everyone thinks playing the high notes are difficult i played them at my first week
I've been playing like 4 years or something like that and once you get the hang of it, stuff like Mozart and Czardas become so much fun.
Not Clarinet, but I've been going at the violin for about two years now and seeing any sort of of musical instrument journey like this is inspiring. I hope you're keeping on keeping on! And thanks for sharing
Yes!! As a clarinet player of 6 years I think your doing great kudos to you! The only thing I would recommend you “fix” is not necessarily your embouchure, but the air inside of your cheeks. Other than that keep going!!
Pop off, I’ve been playing clarinet since sophomore year (used to play bari sax) and I remember my first class I didnt make a single sound out of it, but I’ve been able to improve so much from then. It’s nice to see people improving on something they’re passionate about and I can definitely relate to you about the clarinet. Awesome
Thank you for sharing your progress! I also studied music Ed and majored in clarinet at my university, so I totally relate to this! Coming from the perspective of having taught students who went from clarinet to bass then back to clarinet, I see a lot of similarities, including how you sounded (it’s normal from my experience to struggle to find a centred sound since clarinet requires a much narrower airstream). Your tone definitely improved a lot, as did your playing overall which was super satisfying to watch! Keep up the great work!
Gosh you are getting there . I really loved that video of yours
Nice! Definitely glad you pointed out you had been playing already and playing bass as well because that would be crazy impressive for your first week. I hope you are enjoying college and learning lots about the clarinet and music!
why are you better at 8 months than some of the kids in my band who've been playing for 6 years!!!!
did you watch the beginning of the video?
Practice.
Generally really good improvement! Just wanted to share some tips I’ve gotten from my professor
1. Engaging your core can help a lot with air support in the throat tones upper registers, to get this under your grasp try thinking of the noise you make when you lift something heavy like hooump that way you engage your core but don’t constrict your lungs
2. Make sure that when your rounding you’re not stop your air and that your just interrupting the stream so that way your aren’t puffing and getting a honky sound at the beginning of each articulated note.
3. Try not to let your throat open up so much this leads to being flat and getting honky uncontrolled tone by not puffing your neck out it will help with your air control and tone
4. Keeping your tongue high up in the back of your throat so that way you are able to get the correct voicing for the higher notes, when trying to work on this you can get the placement right by hissing like a cat or saying the letter E
Dude it legit took me eight-ten months to play above the break and u did it in a week? That’s crazy and amazing!!!
very good for 2 years. Im currently at 7 years. I must admit when I heard mozards clarinet concerto, I did cringe when I heard a bunch of missed notes, but the fact that you can play it to where I can recognize it after not even 2 years of playing.... thats impressive.
i like the fact that we can see by your face the evolution
So happy that young people are passionate about this instrument!!
Gotta say, tackling Hindemith at 10 months is pretty gutsy. Most college-level players I know wouldn’t touch that stuff with a 10-foot pole
Nice to watch your progression thanks for posting you have come a long way ! BTW I did not know there was even a A clarinet so thanks for writing that in on the clip. Take Care
its awesome that we share the same major and instrument! I got accepted into UofL but will be auditioning for the school of music some time after December! The solos I'm taking are actually from the same piece you played at 10 months, I'll be playing movement 1 and 4 :))
Okay, as an 8th clarinetist, I am a little disappointed. You aren’t supposed to have air in your cheeks. It will help with your tone, and it makes your embouchure more firm. Other than that, it’s pretty good. Good job on the high notes, articulations, dynamics, and over all the time you spent on learning this instrument. Continue working on everything. You got this. Remember this.
T.A.R.T.S.
T=tone
A=articulations
R=Rich sound
T=Technique
S= Sound quality
Continue this on! You got this dude.
*tort*
Tone is prolly the hardest thing to master but if you master tone then most of what you play sounds good
YUM good tip thx
Now I can do well
*He also moves around quite a bit, when playing & taking a breath in, he's good just he needs to try to be a bit more quiet taking a breath & more still. Better to sit in a chair than stand actually.*
@@simp3864 it depends!! lots of professional clarinetists will move a lot while playing. as long as you can keep a good tone!
I played clarinet for 3 years in middle school and now because of covid I didn’t get to go to school and join a music class to play it. I miss it so much!!!
OMG! U r doing so well. I have played the clarinet for 2+ years in school and I can't even go over the break. OvO;
The fact you are playing over the break at 1 week is impressive to me, I've been playing clarinet for 4 years now and just last year I've started playing over the break.
lol ikr
3 years until years until you played over the break? That's not good.
Seriously?
I need updates on this!! take more videos so I can see your progress because I think you have so much talent. I couldn't play notes in the high register for many months, so it's an achievement that you advanced so quickly. I've been playing for six years, and I'll say that once you develop the muscle memory in your mouth to have the correct embouchure, progress really skyrockets from there
Nice progress for 2 years! Keep it up
Long live us clarinetists
a lot of improvements every months! I have been playing the clarinet for 2 years + 4 months
Great video! The progress you’ve made in 2 years is really impressive. Just from the choice of music you’re playing, I can tell you put a lot of time and practice into improving. Keep working hard, it takes more and more work the further you go but in the end it’s really worth it!
Wow👏🏼
Impressive
Keep on the good work
We are on the same path bro.
You have a brilliant channel-
Hi Riley, thanks for sharing your progression it was really interesting to hear the changes. I am just about to embark on teaching myself the clarinet from scratch. I already know I am able to produce a noise so that's encouraging. I had a look through your and others comments (thanks everyone for the cheek shaming, going to have that stuck in my head now!) but couldn't see you mention on average how often or also for how long your practise sessions were to achieve these results. Are you able to advise about how often and for how long each time you would recommend to make good progress? Thanks for any tips you can share. You have also inspired me to consider creating a video diary of my progress too but not sure if I would post mine.
Jenna Rocks! Haha! I suscribed. Love from Budapest
Squidward been real quiet since this came out
Epic progress. I hope you've kept it up, you could make a lot of yourself as a clarinettist!
Good job, keep practicing!
Really good job on the high notes iv only done band for one year and I play flute but I know clarinet high notes are hard so kudos to u
Hello fellow woodwind, I'm a student in MWIS (Maui Waena Intermediate School) I'm a band member for our school and play the Tenor Saxophone, one thing you can do to make your tone sound better is to not puff your checks. My band teacher taught this to us and it really works! So I recommend you to try it out.
I'm hoping I can make this good of progress before college. I've been playing for about 6 years now, but this year recently someone's actually told me things I can work on and fix (because I was taught wrong for 5 years). I'm not that bad of a player (I hope) I think one of my biggest problems is anchor tonguing that really holds me back. I suppose playing on a crappy 50 year old broken clarinet also doesn't help but eh. I loved the progress bro, I hope you keep going with it
Whoa that's long sorry
Was wondering if during the time. What if any items did you change? Mouthpiece/ligature/reed brand, strength/or clarinet.
Nice video Bro, you play very good. I played clarinet when I was 16 years old, but unfortunately I needed to stop. Today I am 35 years old and I want to play clarinet again =D
Good Job!
Hi Chopin
I played for 6 years then I quit 😂 well done bro. This is great.
I've been playing for 13 years and I haven't played an A clarinet yet (what normal plp do).
Yo the air in you cheeks at five was like bro u gotta let air pass through ur clarinet and tighten your cheeks gut it was fixed a few clips later really nice progress
I've been here before this gets famous :DD
This is really upsetting for me as I have been playing for 3 months and cant go over the break from A to B easily still.
bro you get what you gat and you dont throw a fit
the quote is “you get what you get and you dont get upset”
I have got trouble same as you. My right cheek puffs, but left stays. I use my diaphragm and nothing is repaired. How you changed it or anyone who know answer how to fix that?
pretty nice
Trombone reigns supreme
How different is bass clarinet to standard clarinet. Is it similar to the difference between bass guitar and guitar.
do not puff the cheeks!
i pllay clarinet 4 years now (since 5th grade im in 9th now) and your better then me in a few months than i was in 2 years. well i didnt really start out with the high notes. i worked on my grip and on the low ones first. just sayin man youre good
As someone who’s going into middle school and going to be in band and playing clarinet, this is a huge inspiration to me!
Any tips for when I start out?
I saw a comment trying to help with your puffy cheek problem, and if it isn't fixed already my first band teacher told us to tighten the corners of our lips as tight as we could. it's fine if u already do that/fixed the problem tho
This is nice! I’ve been playing for 4 years and your pretty good lol. I’m playing college pieces now but I don’t think I’m good I haven’t even started high school lol. At 1 year I was absolutely terrible because I didn’t start playing seriously until grade 7
but you’re playing college pieces? you must be advanced. i’m sure you great maybe your can ask your music/band teacher, lesson teacher, or a more advanced player than you to hear you play and let you know how you did and give you suggestions! God bless you :)
candace Luke well I have. And I asked my private lesson teacher who got a bachelor]s in clarinet he says I’m good and is making me even better!
Just keep at it....
I love play my clarinet for 2 years
I might start… advice?
Good effort!
my director: DONT PUFF YOUR CHEEKS OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
you can see the progression
Seeing czardas at one year 👀
My brothers been playing clarinet since 5th grade I’m in 5th he’s in 12th I have been playing for 6 months
It took me about half a day to make a sound
I used to play flute but didn’t like it so I quit
Now I am going in to higher notes
I have gone up to a high g and high c
That was good
Nice contents 👍
is he talking bout the hairline or flute progression?
What’s the song called on 1 year and 7 months?
3:47 i got a bit tense at this point thinking the lick is approaching
What is the piece at 5:43?
this was under the piano section on my youtube page for some reason
I’m in band, and damn we learn quick. Did you learn by yourself? And my biggest struggle is the lower notes. What about you?
I struggle with really low notes too its almost like its a little harder to blow and i just end up squeaking lol but I'm working on it
Hi! I can’t find the etude you played in 1 year 1 month :/ Do you by any chance have a recording? It sounds so cool!
ruclips.net/video/JJUZp4a1Nww/видео.html
has he ever tried the hell of the song "Knights of the roundtable" IT IS SO HARD
I have been playing the tuba since the 4th grade
Dude serious respect, sticking with an instrument is a talent. I must say for 2 years of progress this is great, however I would like to see that air in your cheeks gone and your embouchure to be tighter. Another thing that you did wonderful was hitting those notes above high C however I did notice in general that you were quite shy about it (now that I think about it this applies to your general playing as well), don’t be afraid to play outwards more, project yourself but make sure to not spread your tone (go flat or sharp = spreading tone) while doing it. Overall this is amazing progress and you are a wonderful player with serious talent. Keep up the good work!
estoy sufriendo, obras complicadas y meses de práctica :(((((
Nice job for two years! But I have to say, you're playing higher notes than I usually play, and I've been playing for six years now. I wouldn't focus so much on high notes at this point, and just try to get a good tone first. As you get more comfortable on the instrument, the high notes will come. Like, you have better tone in the high notes than me, it's apparent that you've practiced them a lot, but there's no point being able to squeeze out a nice high f if you can't cleanly slur over the break or keep the throut tones in tune.
why would u play such advanced music, instead of simple pentatonic / major scale songs. ive been playing woodwinds for 10 years+ and still only play simple major scale songs and trying to master that before going to advanced music like ur playing on day one.
benn playing for 5 years why are you better than me in 1 week ;-;
did you get a yamaha??
This guy at 1 week was better than me at 2 years lol
This year I turn 7 as a clarinetist
Good progression, but i think you mean buffet festival?
Squidio 38 no i meant selmer recital
Me Before the playing: there is going to be a lot of squeaking.
Me hearing week one: already better than me. 😂
OMG THE 1 YEAR SONG YOU PLAYED WAS ONE MY BAND PLAYED OEDJHCCJKVNJVKBV I think it was charzard or chardis? I can’t remember if you know the name please let me know lol
Aight lemme go play Carnival of Venice rnrn
Again ur crazy good for only playing for a little under two years but like the other comments have said just make sure to not puff your cheeks out and to keep the air blowing through ur clarinet (if that makes sense)
Wait so are you playing Bb clarinet or A clarinet
like it
im a flute player but i noticed a HUGE improvement in your tone! keep up the great work!
I'm just learning Clarinet and Bassoon
You entered this journey as Squidward and came out as Squilliam
Squidward is very impressed
i‘ve been playing for 2-3 years and i‘m as good as you were at 8 months lmao
