The next Masterclass from AMPD Studios by Old Mutual proudly presents iconic South African rapper and songwriter, Kwesta.Born in 1988 and raised in Katlehong, Kwesta first gained industry attention as a member of a group called The Ghetto Fellas, which later became known as the Juvenylz.
After the group broke up, he fought to keep his dream alive by entering in
competitions and taking part in events, winning YFM’s Rap Activity Jam MC and ETV’s Shiz Niz Freestyle Kings Special, among others.At the same time, he refused to accept anything less than the superstardom he believed he was destined for and continued to hustle and record his own music.
Finally, his big break came in 2010 when he was selected as a Brand SA
Ambassador for the World Cup which put him in the company of international stars Kelly Rowlands and 2Baba as they collaborated for MTN’s anthemic track, Everywhere You Go.
After ten years at the top, Kwesta is now perfectly positioned to share valuable
insights into how to build a sustainable career and the role that responsible spending plays in setting you up for success in the music business.

My 2 cents to writers inspired by the white boy's question.
1. if you hit a block leave it you'll come back to it whenever coz if it's not natural it's gonna sound forced - don't rush the creativity - the song that's my latest single took 2 years to complete I just kept revisiting it puzzle by puzzle creating itself through me till the last piece of the puzzle .
2. Travel; speak to a lot of people; watch more than just typical tv watch doccies; look at art; be curious and observe; learn the dynamics of different relationships and get out of yourself and you'll never run out of inspiration
3. use your phone recorder and note pad coz inspiration or a an idea for a song is seldom gonna come at convenient times, and if you don't jot it down or record that melody right there and then it'll be gone and will probably not gonna come back again
4. Don't overwrite; most times a song doesn't need so much words - if the message is across that's it, focus on making it a song not speech.
5. Last but not least; learn to play an instrument (piano or acoustic guitar preferably so you can play around with chords; melodies and progressions)coz it'll broaden your skill all that much and you can put a melody to what your wrote yourself- coz the marriage between lyric and melody is cruicial; the melody brings the emotion; mood and soul of whatever you wrote and it's preferable when they both come from one creative mind most times.
6. Believe in your uniqueness; don't try to sound or write like anyone - take advice and lessons ofcoz but don't compromise yourself for anyone even those you look up to - also especially producers; it's important to get a producer who's gonna work with you on your art instead of working over you and overwriting everything till the finish product is no longer your initial concept - and know that some wants to add or alter melodies and lyrics so they can also get a to claim something on royalties - work with producers that will respect your concept and the music more than getting paid
