A real force in music here in North Carolina, growing up in Greensboro, and tapping in to a unique heritage of Black string band music (called old-time) in these parts in the area around Mebane and Haw River. The Carolina Chocolate Drops music is a real treasure of that musical heritage. "Cornbread and Butterbeans" is a wonderful example of that music. Here she plays a fretless open-back banjo in the clawhammer style popular in old-time string band music.

I'm so glad you are finally spotlighting this remarkable performer and I see you've done your due diligence. Multi-instrumentalist, ethnomusicologtst, trained singer, Rhiannon can range effortlessly from intense introspection to full rockin' out. Investigate more please Beth.

She was a standout in the concert "Another Day, Another Time: Celebrating the Music of Inside Llewyn Davis." She performed (and yes, I had to google this) S'iomadh Rid (The Dhith Om / Ciamar A Ni Mi) and it was amazing!! 🙂❤

She begins plucking one string at a time while singing. She could pluck one string the entire song and sound so pure and beautiful. (And thanks for the multimedia education. Beth.) Your album is still on top of my stack. I appreciate your incredible and haunting voice at least ten times a day

I have to mention my Rhiannon Giddens story, it was and always will be a musical highlight for me.
The first I became aware of her was when the Carolina Chocolate Drops played the Calgary Folk Festival. At the end of the night volunteers and performers would gather at the host hotel for dancing in one room with chilling and acoustic music in another room.
I had planned myself in the quietest corner of the quiet room. While suiting there, a few of the performers pulled up chairs right near me.
When the instruments came out I was listening to Rhiannon on the banjo, Tim OBrien on the mandolin, a top tier banjo and guitar player from my neck of the woods Craig Korth, and the accordion player from Eliza Carthy’s band.
Over 90 minutes of pure bliss I will never forget.

She is just phenomenal in so many artistic ways. It's like she took bits and pieces inherited from her varied genetics and created a superior musician with the best of each part. So spiritual.

If space aliens came to earth wanting to know about the human soul, we should just have Rhiannon Giddens perform for them. Beyond the off-the-charts talent and commitment to her craft, she's just such a genuine human being, no matter if she's speaking, playing, or singing. For those who liked this performance, please check out her performances of "Angel City" and Birmingham Sunday". I won't waste words trying to describe them, you need to hear them. BTW, Brandi Carlisle is another artist who makes me feel like there's hope for us humans. Beth recently reacted to "The Joke". Great performance and reaction.

She was on the TV show Nashville for a bit. When I heard her sing there, I had to follow up. She's so good. Ruby...bluegrass song with a touch of opera. Pretty Little Girl withr the Blue Dress on...bluegrass with a little scatting. At the Purchasers Option, she wrote. Fantastic.
    Thanks.

Remember that early American Folk Music was a hodge-podge of the music of Africa, Ireland, Spain and many other places that this nation of immigrants brought with them and then combined.

Nicely done Beth ... Its a very restrained number. She's played with the Dubliners and curated the Cambridge folk festival as well as performed there and throughout the British isles. Shes played with several folk/rock super groups and written her share of protest songs.
The Album the Basement tapes ... heavily draws on her tallents along with other Musical superstars..
Including down the River and Spanish Mary a must to see the original animated video. Who's lost basement tapes were they ?
A funny guy with a whiny voice and who dared to pick up an electric guitar at a folk gig.. Robert Zimmerman..
Bob Dylan ... So anyone who has the clout to finish his works is going to be beyond the usual curve.
Its through a very grainy recording of this lady playing with a North American Indian lady playing slide guitar.... The amazing PuraFe.

At last ...the ladies a force of nature and her original band the Carolina choclate drops were a masterclass in how black and poor emigray white folk musicians created Early american music..
Shes also a musical polymath and plays Claw banjo violin guitar and half a dozen other folk instruments including the skin drum.

So beautiful. Now, look at the Carolina Chocolate Drops' Cornbread and Butterbeans! That song is the meeting of Coastal Carolina and Appalachia. Rhythm and plain storytelling. So much music has been lost between the Tidelands and the mountains in the past 50 years. Never mind what the Grand Old Opry erased while hammering out what "County" music was during my grandfather's time.

Pleased that you have focused on the wonderful Rhiannon Giddens. Great song choice too. The best version of this beuatiful old hymn that I have heard, along with Natalie Merchant's haunting version.
Natalie Merchant is another American singer-songwriter with a great, soulful voice who is well worth a review. She has written so many great songs, but I would suggest either her song 'Thick as Thieves', 'Verdi Cries' (when she was in 10000 Maniacs) or one of the live ,TV solo piano performances (on RUclips) of 'Eat for Two' from around 1993, when she first went solo.
