Tuner holes & Headstock logo inlay - Building a Single Cut model Guitar (Part 6)

- In this episode I'm putting the final touches to the headstock of this guitar build.
I'll show you how I position the tuner holes and share with you a little trick to prevent tear our when drilling the tuner holes.
After the tuner holes it was time to do the headstock logo inlay.
Where I initially had planned for an engraved logo filled with epoxy resin I had to use a handcut aluminum logo instead. I'll show you how the logo was made and how I did the inlay.

Awesome headstock design
Hello, it's just funny that you drilled the holes for the tuners all way through! Most modern tuners (or all of them) need 8mm on the front & 10mm half way in from the rear! The tuners then sit a bit tighter and keep tune easier. Keep it up and stay healfy!👍😷

I used Sperzel tuners and they require a 10mm hole all the way through.
In my experience most modern style tuners made by Sperzel, Schaller, Hipshot, Gotoh, etc. require a 10mm hole. Vintage style tuners however may require the ø8,73-ø10,32mm hole like you described or even a ø8,73mm hole all the way through.

I get the small Dremel bits from my local hardware stores.
You could check Dremel.com to find a local or online dealer. I mostly use the 0.8mm bits no. 111.

BTW ik heb een behoorlijke grove fout gemaakt bij de inlay. Oh en de zaag die ik had bleek te dik waardoor het lijmen van de fretten niet fantastisch ging. Maar hé het is de eerste gitaar die ik maak. Volgende gitaar wordt gewoon een partscaster die ik zelf ga verfen.

Dat is jammer om te horen. Het is altijd erg vervelend als het niet is geworden wat je ervan verwacht had.
Een parts caster is vaak een goede manier om met gitaarbouw te beginnen. Dan kan je langzaam aan steeds meer technieken oefenen.

Ja fret werk is wel een cruciaal onderdeel van de hele gitaar.
Erg jammer, maar hopelijk wel een leermoment geweest.
Is there any good way to fix a tuner hole you messed up? I’ve had a couple necks I made where I ended up remaking because I messed up the positioning. Not by much but enough that I could see it every time I played and it drove me nuts.

I think it depends on how far off the hole is. If it's just off you could glue in a dowel made from the same wood as the headstock with matching grain direction. And the washer at the top will most likely coverup the mistake.
If the washer doesn't cover up the dowel and you have a veneer on the headstock. Remove the veneer, put in the plug and cover it up with a new veneer. The tuner on the back will most likely cover up most of the repair.
Or re-drill all the holes with a larger drill bit and plug them with a wood type in a contrasting color and call it a design feature.
There are special sets of drill bits specially made to make the holes and matching plugs.
Very nice as always! I do admire your skill to hand cut the logo and inlay it. A skill I do not have at all and the reason why I am looking at other options to do this. I have another question for you if I may

Is it possible to make a guitar as a total beginner?
The short answer is: Yes you can. All guitar builders were total beginners at one point.
The big question is how long it would take to get to your desired result?
This highly depends on your current skillset, knowledge, talent and ability to learn and pickup new abilities.
I believe, with time, anyone can learn anything if they really set their mind to it.
So yeah it is possible to make a guitar as a total beginner. Just take your time and set yourself reasonable goals and expectations. Study the topic as much as you can and start developing your skills as soon as possible.
I don't know Maderas Barber so I can't give you any feedback on them.

I’d love to get a protractor like the one you use. Do you know where I could buy one? Is yours metric?

The brand of the protractor I'm using is Incra and yes mine is metric.
I think you can find them in any good woodworking supplies store both on- and off-line.
I think even Amazon might have them in both Metric and Imperial.
I bought mine at a Dutch trade show, just google and I'm sure you can find a store or webshop that sells them in your country.

Q: Why did you do 4+2 with the tuners? Is there a tonal reason? Aesthetic? Stability?

For this guitar and headstock I'm going to use Sperzel locking tuners of which the orientation can be altered.
There are some brands that sell 4x2 sets as well. I think Graphtech has 4x2 sets.
If you're doing 3 4x2 headstocks, you could also buy 2 sets of Left 6 in-line tuners and 1 set of right side 6 in-line tuners.
