I dunno, way I see it everybody's fine, but Fire is incredibly fragile and can be outright killed by contact with Water. Like, there's some level of Fire harming the world around them, and that being their only form of interaction, but really like, out of all of these you're totally fine unless you're fire at which point you are actually going to die if you touch water and you'll probably mess up any Earth person you touch.
Still, kind of lame that they took this concept and the only message they could think of is "Segregation Bad" I was hoping for, y'know, something. Anything really.
Don't have much hope for this, but I'll wait for it to come out I suppose.

Everybody jokes that Pixar films are ''What if blank had feelings.'' and it's largely true. One of the biggest things that Pixar seems to forget is that what the characters are is integral to the story.
Toy Story can not happen if characters are anything else than toys.
Even Cars 1 and 3 have a reason to be cars. If Lightning was a human he would just need a newer car.
Everybody talked about how the Good Dinosaur is just a boy and his dog story but with a dinosaur as an owner and a human boy as a dog. The magical world of Onward is just our world with fantasy creatures and fantasy gags mixed in.
Pixar used to make human stories in fantastical worlds. Now they are turning fantastical worlds into cities and suburbs. the ''realism'' is holding them back.

    • @localscissors4036

THIS! I was thinking while watching, "Why did the elements make human cities? Why are the air elementals living on the ground just like the others? Why is it just Big CityTM but swap people with elements?" It's so boring! ATLA did it WELL by creating/using different cultures and styles for each of the elements. And most fantasy worlds (LOTR, Narnia,) have extensive histories that show how the world was shaped. But this leaves out how and why all the cities are like that. There's a bunch of "basics of worldbuilding" videos that I feel like Pixar need to rewatch?

Imagine if this movie started off with this generic plot line, but then find out it's actually dangerous for fire girl and water boy to be too close. They try to hold hands only to find fire girl loses her hand because... well... water kills fire...
And water boy loses his hand due to vaporisation... because of this they agree it's best they just stay friends... but then due to the villain seeing this interaction, he finds a way to use the mix of elements as a weapon
They would experiment unethically by mixing different elements.. wind adds life to fire. Water makes the earth grow etc. And it's how he figures which different elements are best suited to make an alience with...
By the end the characters realise that instead of using the mix of elements to attack or hurt others, they can use it to boost themselves to perform their duties better and more efficiently but in a safe manor.. fire and water could still mix so long as wind or grass is there to help spread the flame to regenerate what is lost from the fire
And water can use the moisture in the air and humidity to regenerate themselves
This story would teach children how elements work when mixed in a literal sense, there would be high stakes and danger, but how these stakes can help create a better future and allow humankind can move forward in a better light and knowledge

You know the thing about this trailer is... I saw the trailer. And I feel like I can tell you EXACTLY how this movie is going to progress... beat for beat. I can tell EXACTLY what this movie will be, we will have the third act breakup because one think. "No they are right. We can't co-exist." which leads to a revelation, and one chases down the other in a dramatic chase scene to share this revelation that now fixes everything, they find together, and the ending shot of the movie will be all four elements mixing together in this world and aiding each other.
It will probably be a very pretty movie, beautiful even, and very well crafted...I firmly believe it will have a perfect three arch structure and all of that. And it will be a technically well-put-together movie that has nothing exactly wrong with it at all. But we all know the EXACT beats of this thing, the EXACT conflicts, and we already know the ending.
It REALLY feels like that this is a movie made by people who WATCHED Pixar movies, who watched "Inside out." know what a Pixar movie is supposed to be... sort of... and then try to copy that... but they are not actually Pixar.
Because you know... They fired John Lasetter and he took his core crew, actual Pixar, with him to Skydance animation so.... All these new knuckleheads can do is watch the old movies and try to copy it which... Isn't how you do great movies.
You don't go far by desperately trying to copy others... At least what I can say for "Luca." and "turning Red." is that they DID go their own way and tried their own things. They just... Weren't particularly remarkable movies. They were fine, nothing really wrong with them... But also lacking that Pixar spark cause... OG Pixar is gone... It's a new crew so they must find a new identity if they wish to succeed.

But yeah, this sort of shitting on people who actually BUILD the goddamn companies is what I hate.
They are trying to phase out Walt Disney so he doesn't get credit, and they replaced all the legacy Disney talent. And the quality of Disney movies plummeted... big shock.
The people there now didn't build the company, they only took over what OTHER people made successful.
With no Lasetter, there would NEVER have been any pixar in the first place.
With no Walt, there would NEVER have been a Disney studio. And we keep forgetting.

    • @MoonPhantom

@@hannahpestell18 Luck was... Fine... It wasn't great. But it wasn't bad. It was just that.... Fine...
I guess we'll have to wait and see what the next couple of flicks are going to be like.
I am not saying ALL movies under Lasetter were perfect. He was still the head of Pixar when they made. "Cars 2." "The good Dinosaur." and "Brave."
Which aren't the top tier Pixar movies either... But you know. Ever since Lasetter left, you can feel that that spark has just sort of... Gone away.
"Turning red." and "Luca." are fine... There's nothing really wrong with those movies... But they really lack that special spark of the Pixar greats. That sense of... you don't really know what is going to happen here at all. And it hits you RIGHT in your heart strings.
That special Lasetter touch is just.... Gone.
"Luck." didn't have it either.... But it was the first one at a new studio so... I guess we'll see.
The sad thing about these Skydance flicks is that they are AppleTV exclusives, they are NOT getting cinema releases at all, and... Who the hell has AppleTV as a streaming service? So... It is pretty much the WORST platform to be on... I just hope Apple will actually allow Skydance some cinema releases, otherwise these movies are going to just be send out to die.

We don't need any more "What if (Insert anthro blob of colour here) had feelings?" or another generational trauma film like all the other modern Disney films. If we go back to the 2000s we had movies that asked questions and explored them. What if the monster in your closet had a reason for scaring you? What if super hero's existed but were forbidden from being hero's? What lengths would a nervous father haunted by the death of his wife go to save there only son? What if two Robots fell in love? Formulaic plots can be saved with good character arcs. Luca is formulaic, but Alberto and Luca are interesting characters. Alberto's trauma from being abandoned by his father manifesting in his jealousy over Luca and Giulia's friendship and ending with him trusting Luca enough as a friend to not abandon him, as well as learning to trust the adults in his life such as Masimo, adds a lot to the film. Basically, there needs to be an character/emotional narrative that is woven into the film that goes beyond the simple message. This film has the I don't want to just do what my parents want thing but it's so simplistic that it's uninteresting, no flavor. It's like plain rice without any curry or veggies to make it taste different. At least it looks pretty.

Luca is an interesting case because, despite being "formulaic" (especially with its shitty "villain"), it feels life a very sincere representation of childhood that comes from the director's own honest views on it. This is why the way the child characters are portrayed feels so unique, there's a lot of extremely simple and hidden raw emotion in the fine details being shown, from their childish idealism clashing with reality to how the decisions the kids (and sometimes even Luca's parents!) make leads them to achieving emotional maturity one step at a time. It's subtle but it's there, and for me it carries the whole movie. I think they shoehorned the "formulaic" aspects to give the movie more "plot", which I see as a symptom of the modern Disney & Pixar problem being horribly inflexible with their movie premises and sticking to safe stuff like their lives depend on it. Still, I love the movie for what it is. It's the last P/D movie that I felt was in some form "real".

Yeah that’s my line of thinking. In the trailer, Ember literally burns a random plant dude and nothing seems to happen. No panic, no confrontation, just an annoyed glare from the plant being who LITERALLY JUST GOT FULL BODY SCORCHED just by her bumping into him.
If it was about Fire elementals specifically being excluded, it would still be bad but then we could still feel sorry for them. Kinda like how Rogue from the X-Men franchise can’t physically touch people because she can accidentally hurt or even kill them. But none of the other elements, even the flammable plant beings, seem to care that Ember is hanging around.
She’s not made to go somewhere else, isn’t regulated to a high contained area, kicked out of enclosed spaces, etc. She’s just walking around the city like any old being.
If her family is made to be “bad” for not wanting her and Wade to get very close, then that would be the most stupid idea ever. Water extinguishes fire! He could legit accidentally hurt her by a simple bump like she did by bumping into plant dude.
I think this is a prime example of Pixar putting the theme and message over actual story coherence. Unless it ends with them wearing special gloves or something to be near each other, then I have a feeling Pixar is gonna horribly bungle the movie.

earth(plants)+air(clouds)=solid core, with something similar to dandelion fluff surrounding it, and I don't mean seeds, just something that looks similar.
fire+water=steam, similar to clouds, but more see through, with a less defined form, and more ghostlike.
fire+earth(plants)=??? I was thinking something like a plant with fire instead of leaves, or something that looks like charred wood, but I could not come up with anything satisfying.
earth(plants)+water=here I again was unable to come up with anything very satisfying to me, the only things I could think of was some sort of seaweed, that acts as the core while completely submerged in water, or some sort of coral with water going all around the body without covering the coral completely, that looks like streams or veins.

For the elements they chose each one has like at least one strength, one weakness, and one neutral.
Fire is strong against plants/earth by burning, is weak to being put out by water, and then can pollute the air (strong) while also being put out by wind (weak).
Water is strong against fire by damping it out, is weak against the air since wind controls water in a way (think like hurricanes, rain, and waves), and then can erode earth (strong) while also growing the plants (weak).
Earth/plants is strong against the air by being a wind breaker and resisting it, weak to fire via burning, and can have plant growth through water (strong) but also erode in water (weak).
Air is strong against water since wind controls water in a way (same as before), is weak against earth/plants since it can’t break through to them very easily, and then can put out fires (strong) while also being hit with pollution from the flames (weak).

Pffft. Yeah. Like was it that hard for them to come up with something that isn't THAT on the nose?
What about Kultura - or "culture" - in reference to the mixing of cultures a mixing of elements would likely result in? Or anything less boring than "element city". Or something that takes inspiration from how many cities and towns were named in the real world? Like, wow, Element City, lemme guess, it has elements in it? A city is likely to be named more after it's geography, than about what is in it in terms of humans/humanoids. Like, Inverness, Dundee, etc. are named after the rivers that are next to them, or flow through them. I'd imagine its similar for place in a lot of other countries. So you would think cities would be named after either people, other places, or geographic features. Glasgow might as well be in reference to what it was - "green glen/green hollow" as opposed to the grey concrete jungle it is now. And London might have been named after one of the kings that seized it. Frydek-Mystek is a town in Czech republic. It's original name might have been called Friedberg which come from the German for "peace mountain". It's largely geographical, or comes from the names of important people. It just doesn't make sense for a city to be called Element City. I even did some very quick digging and Las Vegas "lies at a site once occupied by marshes, freshwater springs, and grassy meadows" (according to Encyclopedia Britannica) and according to Reservationists, it's name is the spanish for "The Meadows". Which might not be what you think of when you hear "Las Vegas", but, hey, it suggests that even the Americas had towns named by geography and language nerds.

Movies like Coco and Inside Out are classics since the plot and world itself is a new experience, but the whole idea of the four elements and what community would be built with the idea of them in mind… it just feels like it’s been done so many times before. Look at Puss in Boots 2 it had many themes in its story that have been done countless times before. An exploration into the ideas of age, death, denial, fear, guilt, regrets

i kinda agree. fire and water romeo and juliet just seems very plain for what pixar, and animation in its entirety is up to lately. I think some stories are timeless, but this does feel overly basic, like it isnt daring to do anything more than the basic trope its premise is based on.

Hey, Dazz, say it louder for those in the back!
Seriously, I am a Pixar-Disney crybaby, or WAS anyway. I love my films to tug on my heartstrings, make me feel something for the characters, show what we as a species have come to know as time has progressed!! Elemental is literally not that for me. Just about the only real praise I have for it is that the art style is pretty, but then again it's Pixar, anything they make at least looks visually pleasing. Character design wise, I hate (I've used elements in more subtle ways in my own character designs than "element but it's generically human like", and I am but a student of the design), the story is lazy and generic, and the plot is predictable and safe. This is not a movie to me so far, if anything this is a generic short from the 1990s to early 2000s in terms of messaging and plot. Pixar could have chosen to make this film anything unique in the slightest, pander to certain communities with the underlying theme of forbidden love this film is setting up for, infuse the character designed with a little more zing to make them stand out as something more than a young middle schooler's OC do not steal, and most of all they could have stood up there with today's new greats, but they actively choose not to. If you are the kind of person who likes generic plotlines and lackluster themes however, while I will respect your decisions I fear for your tastes. While Dreamworks' Trolls 3 is not a film I will watch nor enjoy the existence of, I can at least understand that Dreamworks needs time to make another film as great as The Last Wish and The Bad Guys. Pixar & Disney have had five years between the two of them, and have not made me feel anything on the big screen and have actively shunned the only shows of theirs (or Disney's) that have brought me any amount of joy in the past few years since the Pandemic. Maybe I will revisit this essay once the movie airs, but until then, Elemental, please, go back to Elementary and come back when you have learned how to tell a deeper story

Just saw it. I thought it did well with the racism or cultural differences what it was actually mote parallel to like off the boat Italians who want there children to only marry other Italian even tho they moved to newyork city. And im sure everyone who know alot off off the boat anything knows that its extremely common family works that way and it can be difficult to change anyones mind. And yeah the actually cant toych each other because he could extinguish her or her vaporize him one but love finds a way and they "become a new element when they touch" i see it as love. I don't really agree that its a great movie for very young children and some of the sexual innuendos were too strong and the language was still strong at times but again most of the innuendos would go right over children who dont knows head fully enough anyway. But the ash in place of ass i dont like for instance. Children dont need to be going around fake cussing and people shouldn't alow the children to do so. Of they say "but i didn't say that word" the reply should be "it doesn't matter what word you use when you use it in that meaning its automatically cursing" and this move has a few things like that. But over all a really cute love story that made me cry alittle along with the water guy lol

There are 118 major elements… yet they chose 4 of the most basic of the basic ones. That in itself is so boring. Imagine led guy stomping around. Or a villian named Uranium who is outcasted but redeems himself once he creates electricity for everyone. Or helium, a funny guy that talks weird. But no we get some cliched love story that we’ve seen a million times before. The earth designs are hideous and and the air guys are basic clouds. It just seems so imaginatively dry.
