    I really like these types of projects. Last summer, I got to about 90% of the way to getting everything to run on Android phones by using a custom kernel and installing a Linux distro as a chroot. The last remaining hurdle to overcome was compiling and installing drivers for a virtual audio cable. Unfortunately, I had to take a step back from the project, but if it works, I should be able to get all modes with just the phone and a USB cable to the radio. If I finally have some time to finish the project, I'll post it on FB and QRZ.

      Huge amounts of work,. Respect!
      Ham radio should be at the forefront of man-portable communications. Instead, it seems we are developing on top of antiquated code, rather than grabbing hold to something new like Android and iOS devices.
      It saddens me.

    I took a leap of faith and spend a bit of change to acquired a refurbished MS Surface 2 instead of an Evolve III Maestro laptop; this was the best decision I made. Not only can I use the Surface to support my ham radio hobby for digital operations, it also supports my DJ hobby as a controller for my Hercules DJ rig, plus the Surface now replaces the old and slow Chromebook I used when I travel away from home :)

    Thanks for another well prepared and presented topic. I suspect that just as you would choose your TX-500 for a mission requiring something more rugged than an IC-705, you probably have experience and insight to share on what you might choose other than a MS Surface. I would be very interested in seeing you present on this in a future video. Thanks for keeping us inspired to get outdoors and operate!

    Hi Julian,
    Greetings from Essex County, England!
    Great video, I'm still learning thanks to you.
    I currently run my IC-705 from our small garden, I'm using a Chameleon MPAS mounted on a 2.5m tall wooden pergola, using the Cha clamp.
    Unfortunately it's made of cheese, it bends as soon as you screw it on... but Chameleon USA tell me I'm doing it wrong.
    What a joke...
    Anyway, last weekend I had my first ever voice contact on 5w, all the way to Italy (Marconi 150th Award) about 678 miles away.
    I was a very happy ham!!!
    Thanks again for all your tips, hopefully I'll invest in a solar setup soon and take all my gear on my bike...
    Take care, stay safe.

    Julian, another great video. Two comments. First, avoid the Surface Go 3. Microsoft botched that release - no new features (that matter), but much worse battery life over the Surface Go2. I managed a small fleet of them for my employer and we traded them for iPads as soon as we could. Second, it looks like Microsoft skipped any Surface Go updates or new releases for this current product cycle. However, there should be plenty of good used or NOS Go 2's still on the market. And you are right - go for the more capable processor and more system RAM.

The Pro 4 has a known issue, the display starts shaking after using heavy programs like FLDIGI, MMSSTV, Skype, etc. No fix to it, unforch, so I’m in the market for a new tablet, and an appropriate radio. I want to be able to do the popular modes in the FLDIGI software. Neat that you have your radio connected wirelessly to the Surface! Love your channel! Jeff, KF5KWO

    I just ordered a Surface Go 2 LTE. Had to get it off ebay as no stores sell them anymore. There really are no other Windows tablets that have GPS, which is surprising. Unless you go with ruggedized tablets which are at least double if not triple the weight and price. I'm planning to make an EmComm Go-Box out of a hard case with the lid on the bottom that the radio and battery and everything is mounted to, and the deep part will lift up as the lid instead. The tablet will be mounted in this deep lid, which will keep it dry and shaded, so I don't need a ruggedized tablet and hopefully the glare won't be an issue either.

    Thanks for this particular write-up!
    I'm using an alternate off-branded name Windows tablet that has three USB c ports. I bought it to get around the fact that the surface only has one USBC port.
    Unfortunately I did not know that it uses a proprietary AC to USBC power supply to charge the tablet.
    It will not recharge with a standard USBC connector, which is a huge oversight.
    I have not had a chance to check to see if the integrated GPS will work or not.
    It does have an integrated LTE modem. But it only works on one band in North America as it was originally made for the Asian market.
    I need to do more testing on my end to see if it will do everything that you could do with the surface.
    If it cannot then I will end up getting a surface. Although at the time when I bought it. It was less than half the cost of the surface. LOL
    If I have trouble trying to get it figured out. I might be contacting you to see if I could donate one to you and have you give it a go.
    The reason why I say this is the tablet is less than half the cost, and it comes with the detachable keyboard and writing pen all in one package!

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  4 месяца назад

      Hi Mark.
      Yes , some of the budget brands will use a USB-C connector, but run 12 volts through it to power a device. The price seems nice at first, but then we have to spend time adapting to the non-standard connections, voltages, ... to make it work.
      I chose a Surface because it is a standard, like an iPad. Companies make accessories like the case and country-specific keyboards, charging adapters, matte screen covers, ... We know these things will work because of the standard.
      I also chose the Surface from the channel perspective, because I know it will be there for the community if I invest the time into these blogs and videos. The most frustrating things is putting out content for a device which becomes discontinued after a few months.
      I hope you get it sorted, and please let us know how it goes.

    Something worth consideration: In my field ops with my surface go 3 I've found that the surface overheats rather easily simply from direct sunlight. Perhaps not as much of an issue in finland, but it regularly causes me problems because of cpu throttling here even in northern wisconsin.

      The OS has been upgraded to windows 11 but is barebones, i used revo uninstaller and powershell to clean most of the bloatware out.
      Microsoft store? gone. ai crap? gone. cloud services? gone. any and all preinstalled software? gone. and so on.
      The only programs installed are ham radio related:
      chirp, varahf, varachat, winlink express, btktimesync(for getting gps time off the 705 since i dont have the lte version), icom remote utility, rsba1v2, tqsl, wsjtx, wsjtz, jtdx, js8call, pathfinder, propview, antscope2(for use with rigexpert analyzer) and paranoia works.
      The only steps needed for it to start throttling are have it be sunny out and ambient temps at about 70f or higher. Once I put it into the shade all is well again.
      It was was exhibiting this behavior before I got sick of the nagging and let microsoft push the windows 11 upgrade.
      No, it's not a warranty issue, microsoft warns about this even in the user manual. Matte black and sunshine mean things get hot.
      The only thing that slows it down is opening the kickstand more to increase the air circulation around the backside.
      Turning on power saving mode also *helps* because that throttles the cpu as well.

    @OH8STN One thig I've struggled with this concept of the TX500, PA500, BAT500 combo is I've always wanted the 100W expedition version of the PA500. Do you find the extra 40W worth having? Or is having the fans a bit cumbersome and not worth the extra 40W? The expedition is quite scarce. I truly think the IC705 is a better radio in almost all respects except the durability department. That specific thing is why I am willing to go the TX500 route over all others as that's what I need is the durability. Only thing holding me up is the 100W exp model over the regular PA500. It will see some home base station use for me but not much as I mostly find HAM stuff more fun out an about. Curious on your thoughts on the two versions of the Expedition model as you are the only one I've found that has used both.

      Absolutely! The Toughbook is a fine machine, but...
      Pros and cons

      - It is power hungry
      - It is very expensive
      - Dual battery setup is awesome
      - Requires external charger
      - It is modular
      - It has a great daylight readable display
      I carried a toughbook for my work in North Africa back in the day. It was indestructible! Today I have 2 Microsoft Surface tablets for less than the price of a Toughbook or Toughpad. Must weigh the pros and cons.

    Having watched previous incarnations of your compute platform, as things stand at the moment I think this seems to be the most pragmatic solution if you want to run Winlink and VARA as well as the other apps. I'm currently running everything on a Raspberry and use a low-cost Android tablet as a teminal. I'd like to run Winlink but being realistic that will need a PC platform sadly - Personally I am not at all keen on Windows, so the Surface line does make sense. I guess the added protection is useful during the inevitable percussive maintenance events that occur with having a Windows OS!

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  4 месяца назад +1

      Honestly, I would run linux on the Surface hardware, if developers would give us decent tools for that platform. Winlink Express and Vara for Linux are a complete no-go on Linux. PAT Winlink should be ran as an app instead of a webpage, and Vara refuses to go Linux because he wants to get paid.
      I would dump Windows in a second if we could have Winlink Express functionality and Vara/VaraFM on Linux. Even better, let's have them on Android.

    You can get a usb-c to the microsoft power cable. To convert the usb c to the propitary connector, this gives you '2' usbc basicly.

      Yep, that's what I'm using as well. The surface connect connector is actually USB-C PD, albiet with a different connector.
      thanks for the tips.

    If I missed it on the video, I apologize. What is the theme you are using on the surface go. Some kind of dark theme?

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  4 месяца назад

      You're all good. I'll eventually add this to the episode notes. I use a windows theme from github called "grayeve theme". It turns off all that ridiculous Microsoft nonsense that kills your eyes. For winlink, there's settings, Set color theme. Make the text white and the background black. Do the same for lists.
      For FT8 and JS8Call, Edit the foreground background and list colors as desired.
      For FLDigi, there are no themes or settings to make it any better.

    hi thanks for all your good work it realy helps .How do you get on for battery life on the surface , can you power it from the main battery pack .The cost of replacement batterys for the surface and fitting make buying a used model a gamble unless it can be backed up with an external supply.

      5-6 hours continuous use on both Surfaces. I am thinking about trying out one of the ARM cpu surface tablets since they are supposed to have much longer battery life.

    Just found your channel and love how you emphasize energy needs for these tools! On another note i have 2 questions for you, im looking for a receiver like the Tecsun pl 660 for family who dont want to invest in hf setups. What do you recommend? Also would it be more wise and cost effective to invest in a vhf/uhf setup like your chest pack that uses digirig and a microsoft surface for data modes. Or go with a dmr handheld with its own data modes?

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  5 месяцев назад +1

      Excellent questions.
      For the d m r radio I would suggest looking at mine Retevis Ailunce HD2 videos & shorts. That radio can do analog voice/data and DMR.
      For the receiver, Check what frequencies you want to monitor and buy one which covers those frequencies, is simple to use, and can be charged grid down.
      Thanks for commenting and for the kindness. It's very much appreciated.

    Hi Julian, how do you handle the inevitable Windows Updates? Do they ever interfere with operations - off-grid, or otherwise?

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  4 месяца назад +1

      Great question.
      I used to, but learned my lesson. First, I don't connect the Surface that often if ever "directly" to the internet. Second, I disable Windows updates until I want to update. Third, I block MS at my firewall, but it still tries to find a way via one of the other machines.

    I try to use only free open source software. I mostly use fldigi and fsq per amrron guide lines.
    I have a 10 watt usdr txcvr (china clone), atu-100 tuner, 40m efhw, an old laptop, samsung tab 8 tablet (andflmsg which is very limited and no fsq, but works) and digirig mobile. I have a simple battery pack, diy 18650 packs and vehicle dc laptop power supply. Currently I have no solar panels. It works well and when on battery only 3 cables are used.

      Yes, I wish all our software packages were open-source. FLDigi has good functionality, but the user interface is hard on the eyes.
      Also wish we had a full-featured open-source Winlink client. PAT is a good start, but not on the same level as Winlink Express.

    just remember anything you do on a MS tablet or computer is recorded and sent to MS as data so anything you want to be encrypted MS will have a non encrypted version saved, to those that think I'm paranoid you should do some research on what data MS collects, read the fine print in the service agreement. all this is to say don't use MS software or hardware if anything you do may be used against you in the future. Microsoft is just not secure in anyway.

      Agreed, and good point! At home, all ports are blocked unless allowed. In the field, no wifi or LTE enabled. I hate MS spying, so I'm somewhat paranoid about it 🤣👍
