    Dirty is not a bad word to describe a boteco. We use this expression to describe such places: “pé sujo”. It literally means “dirty foot”. It makes reference to places that are so simple that people can go even if they are barefoot.

  • @phosphenevision

    If there is that much space inside for so many tables, it's not a boteco lol it's a bar/restaurant. Sitting on the sidewalk or at a counter is definitely part of the true boteco experience. If the table and chairs are made of plastic it's 👌 a true boteco. If there is always group of middle aged regulars then it's an old school certified boteco. My dad had his own personal beer cup at his regular boteco 😂

      @JetLagWarriors  2 года назад +23

      Ah ok! We didn't want to be offensive or rude.. but we wanted to describe it accurately! And honestly I really love having my cervejas in a 'pe sujo' boteco rather than a fancy one! So, we meant no harm when we said they looked sort of dirty, (or un-renovated LOL), and it's great to know you guys call it the same. They really are great places for a cerveja :D

    So, Brazil has this thing where we like to name fancy establishments using humble names, so when you see "boteco" or "botequim" something something IN THE NAME of the place, that's not actually what it claims to be, it's usually a more upscale bar instead. That happens a lot and not just with nightlife 😂
    Gosh, I miss going to real botecos! It's been at least two years since the last time I was at one like that. Enjoy the beer and the finger food!

    Remember:
    A boteco has to look a little bit dirty and/or old.
    If it's fancier, it isn't a boteco. It's a common bar (maybe imitating a boteco style, but it isn't really a boteco for me).
    And the ultimate boteco is a "pé sujo" xD At least in Rio. Or a "botequim".
    It's like the even dirtier (in this case, when someone says "botequim, they are all kinda dirty indeed), messier and older. Botecos sometimes look old and dirty, but are not really that much).
    Usually a real boteco doesn't have "boteco" on its name. I've already seen a lot of fancy bars using in the name "boteco". Even using the name "botequim". It's a gourmetization.

    Lovely fun vlog, guerreiros! Interesting and everyone enjoyed themselves.
    I'm guessing "boteco" is related to the Spanish "bodega" (as well as the French "boutique").
    I've seen pricey hipster wine bars calling themselves "bodegas". But an old English retired journalist friend living in a pueblo in northern Spain along the Camino Real, the pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela, kept his personal wine in the pueblo's common "bodega". This was a dark gloomy chamber dug out of the side of a hill and the whole village (pueblo) stored there wine there to protect it from the humidity and beastly variations in ambient temperature. Every day or two he would go to the bodega to fetch his wine for his dinners.
    Did you savour slowly the cachaça Art gave you? I've heard there are indeed some very fine quality cachaças to be appreciated gradually. Very charming of Art!

    • @JetLagWarriors
      @JetLagWarriors  2 года назад +9

      Ahh! right. Forgot to mention that boteco is related to the term 'bodega' in Spanish (blame it on the cervejas!), although I didn't know 'boutique' was in that same category too. Very interesting!
      And yes the cachaca Art gave us is really delicious. We still have half the bottle... although it might not last long :)

    The best cachaças in Brazil are from Minas Gerais and the itinerary of the historical cities in MG, such as Ouro Preto, Congonhas, Tiradentes, Diamantina, etc. are not to be missed! I would like to know if it is in your plans to travel to MG, to get to know not only the historic cities but also the capital, Belo Horizonte, which is very nice. In Belo Horizonte, you can't miss the Central Market, wonderful and without the cheats as in the market of São Paulo, besides the Pampulha Lagoon, the Pope Square among other things. Another place not to be missed is Inhotim, in the city of Brumadinho, the largest open-air museum of modern art in the world! Minas Gerais is a state of many mountains and waterfalls, a place of much ecological tourism. We have the city of Capitólio, very high waterfalls and lots of tourism, and, among many other cities (impossible to say all of them), Monte Verde, which is a European style city, very cold, beautiful, and was considered the best destination for cold (mountain) tourism in Brazil in 2009!
    Come to Minas Gerais, and drink the best cachaça in Brazil and the original pão de queijo (cheese bread), and the cheeses here, which are among the best in the world. The Serra da Canastra is considered one of the main cheese-producing cities, a paradisaical place, with fantastic natural beauty! The people of MG are also different, very receptive, and the food from Minas Gerais is considered the best in Brazil! Yes, this is no exaggeration, everything in MG is very good. Even Pelé, the best soccer player in the world, is from here! Laughs...
    Minas Gerais is located next to São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, in the southeast region, it is the third state in the economy of Brazil (but it is much bigger than both) and it stands out for its agriculture and cattle raising, tourism, and ecotourism (besides also having many industries). Cows, oxen, and horses are bedded for millions of dollars! Minas Gerais is considered the "granny state" of Brazil, but I usually compare it, for its agribusiness, to the state of Texas/USA.

    Guys you were just in front of the place called SIMBALAÊ, which the owners are a family I know, and they have THE BEST CAIPIRINHA with RAPADURA (they won prizes w it, rapadura its a super tradicional brazilian raw sugar bar) and also very northeast style finger foods and burguers. You must go there before leaving sp!

    Try these: Bar do Veloso at Vila Mariana neighborhood, you must ask coxinha and bolinho de arroz. On Padaria Ceci in Planalto Paulista neighborhood ask for a pie of ham and catupiry. Pizzaria Sala Vip at Ipiranga neighborhood.

    When you guys come to Rio you should go to Olégario avenue at barra da tijuca. It has it's own lifestyle, an avenue with lots of different bars with a lot of diversity. There you can eat, drink sitting, buy a beer and drink standing on the sidewalk (sometimes even on the streets when it closes). If you guys visit the favelas it would also be a great contrast because Barra is one of the High society neighborhoods in Rio.

    A boteco is also usually aimed at the lower classes. That's how the original botecos started in small and poor communities. The atmosphere is very laid back and simple. A fancy bar would never be considered a boteco. Although now you'll see "gourmetised" versions of botecos for the upper classes but it's basically a performance of the real thing.

    5:20 => "Camisinha", wich translates literally to "little tshirt", means this "thermal bottle holder" but also means condom (that one).
