Sallie Wakley Sculpting A Hare

  • Sallie Wakley demonstrates how she goes about making a ceramic sculpture of a Hare, which, will then be Raku-fired (see Mick Morgan video for insight into the Raku process). Although Sallie is a fast worker we would never be able to show the whole process from beginning to end, in such a short time. So we have considerably speeded up the action for your benefit.

    I reckon that I saw this video just in time. I have been struggling with the carving in wood, that I have been doing without too much success. I think that now I can make more progress with Sallie's excellent example as my guide. Thank you all.

    The paper simply burns away. The sculpture does shrink through the firing process but doesn't change shape much. This is predominantly due to Sallie using paper clay (clay with a small percentage of paper pulp mixed in) that has good strength and allows her to make tall items without fear of them drooping over during firing.

  • @fountainfineart
    @fountainfineart  13 лет назад +1

    This was filmed over a couple of days, on and off. Modelling is only the first stage though as each sculpture requires firing, glazing and then raku-firing again. the finished article can be seen on Sallie Wakley's archive pages on the Fountain Fine Art website. It's called 'Hare 11' and sold for £400, November 2010.

    Dear Sallie, great work, I enjoyed.
    One question, which tool do you use in order to sculpt the hair ?, the motion is faster for me to see it.
    Thanks

    Best,

    No wire or skewers in the ears? This is so beautiful I hope the ears do not get broken? I collect rabbits and I cannot tell you how many ceramic hare figures are missing an ear or had to be repaired Sallie Wakley is such a talented sculptor!

    I've watched this several times now and itis such a shame that it is so fast. Almost impossible to learn anything really useful. I know that all the answers I am after are in there. Thanks Sue is there a way of watching a slowed down version ? Don't mind buying it !!!

    • @fountainfineart
      @fountainfineart  6 лет назад

      Sophie Hale Thanks for your comment and good question. It is a bit quick but we decided to create this so that Sallie’s customers had a small insight into how she goes about modelling a piece of her work. We’ve obviously completely skipped the glazing and firing processes! So, in short, the video was never meant to be truly educational for sculptors. I don’t think Sallie would want to give too many of her secrets away anyhow!
