Sallie Wakley Sculpting A Hare

- Sallie Wakley demonstrates how she goes about making a ceramic sculpture of a Hare, which, will then be Raku-fired (see Mick Morgan video for insight into the Raku process). Although Sallie is a fast worker we would never be able to show the whole process from beginning to end, in such a short time. So we have considerably speeded up the action for your benefit.
What a talented artist you are. I simply love your work Sallie. ❤
It's a pain-staking job but it's all worth it! What a magnificent work of art Sally :D
that was a truly inspiring and beautiful demonstration, thank you so much! The music and everything about it moved me to tears.
Thanks Lucinda
I'm intrigued to see your Hare now!
Compliment !!!
GREAT fun to watch a Hare come to 'life". Thanks for leaving your door open ... ;o)
Thanks for sharing this - it was great to see the process. I loved your helper kitties :) Terrific hare btw!
loved watching it all come together. I got some good ideas from seeing how it all came together. I too love to see the cats make an entrance, its just like my studio.
Fantastic work! you make it look so easy!!!
I like the cat's input too lol! x
I reckon that I saw this video just in time. I have been struggling with the carving in wood, that I have been doing without too much success. I think that now I can make more progress with Sallie's excellent example as my guide. Thank you all.
I love your work...I feel so inspired ❤
Thank you for sharing the process :)
The paper simply burns away. The sculpture does shrink through the firing process but doesn't change shape much. This is predominantly due to Sallie using paper clay (clay with a small percentage of paper pulp mixed in) that has good strength and allows her to make tall items without fear of them drooping over during firing.
This was filmed over a couple of days, on and off. Modelling is only the first stage though as each sculpture requires firing, glazing and then raku-firing again. the finished article can be seen on Sallie Wakley's archive pages on the Fountain Fine Art website. It's called 'Hare 11' and sold for £400, November 2010.
Amazing to watch such skill. Thanks for sharing
Dear Sallie, great work, I enjoyed.
One question, which tool do you use in order to sculpt the hair ?, the motion is faster for me to see it.
Thanks
I love how the cats keep trying to help!
Beautiful, thanks for sharing
Очень реалистичная скульптура зайца! Браво мастеру! 👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️👍
That's totally fantastic, I'm very impressed with the realism. How long did the sculpture take all told? (I'd ask if it's for sale too but it's well out of my price range I suspect)
Fabulous! Thank you
Fantastico!!! Muchas grácias por el video
awsomeeee! how long it takes?
What happens to the paper when you fire it? does it all just burn away? does it change shape at all when fired?
I love this.
Hi, thank you for sharing your talent with us. one question I did not see you put a vent hole in that case will the fumes of the paper cause it to explode?
Best,
Elli
Sallie does put a vent hole in but this was not shown in the film
No wire or skewers in the ears? This is so beautiful I hope the ears do not get broken? I collect rabbits and I cannot tell you how many ceramic hare figures are missing an ear or had to be repaired Sallie Wakley is such a talented sculptor!
Perfect!
awesome thanks for the video, so is this wed clay and then fired after with the paper in?
Yes. That's right
You're welcome!
Can the same process be used with Raku clay?
Wow! Thanks for sharing. Why do you keep stuffing more and more paper inside?
Ah man... I wish isaw this video before I made my hare... lol Great job!
amazing
Отлично👍что за материал?
que material es con el que modela ?
QUE TRABALHO LINDOOO MEUS PARABÉNS 👏👏👏👏👏
EU AMEI ❤❤❤❤❤❤

TENHA UMA ABENÇOADA NOITE COM A PAZ DO SENHOR JESUS CRISTO
good job! that must have been hard! I'm hoping to sculp something some day!
Amazing
I so want to have a go at this myself. Is it much harder without the help of the cats?
***** I thought as much. Cats usually are.
Beautiful creation! Do you lift the board under it and put the whole thing in the kiln, board and all? I've never participated in firing.
No, just fire the Hare
Wooow amazing
So was the black kitten
I've watched this several times now and itis such a shame that it is so fast. Almost impossible to learn anything really useful. I know that all the answers I am after are in there. Thanks Sue is there a way of watching a slowed down version ? Don't mind buying it !!!
Sophie Hale Thanks for your comment and good question. It is a bit quick but we decided to create this so that Sallie’s customers had a small insight into how she goes about modelling a piece of her work. We’ve obviously completely skipped the glazing and firing processes! So, in short, the video was never meant to be truly educational for sculptors. I don’t think Sallie would want to give too many of her secrets away anyhow!
Bravo...
im taking a class in sculpting this semester (spring 2011).
When do you take the paper out?
nice
Could you slice the figure in green ware stage, to remove the newspapers, then seal up again with slip?
Might be difficult; not sure what benefit there would be.
fountainfineart just curious, you are right, in hindsight of course, probably not worth it. Thanks for replying☺️
I wish it was on higher quality so i could see the details
hi, which clay you use please?
حرفية وفن ابداع
How do you do to burn this sculpture? Do you remove the jornal inside it.
The newspaper just turns to ash during firing
Where was the vent hole placed? How many and what size? Thanks
At the bottom. Just a few mm
万分感谢
does the paper being inside work with an electric kiln? or is that a problem having paper inside while firing in an electric kiln?
Tree Lore it is bisque fired in an electric kiln, so no problem
@@fountainfineart and there is no smoke and doesn't effect other items in the kiln?
Haha, cat is so curious why so much attention lavished on the clay hare and not him/her. Beautiful work.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
رائع جدا وبسيط جدا
genius
you used news paper for the basic shape then wrapped the clay around... is this possible with cardboard...? I'm using air dry clay and wondered if this technique on your video will work the same...
Not sure. Never tried. It'd be interesting to know how you got on
fountainfineart it worked... 😀😀😀
the paper just burns out, aye? Lovely
My question too!
Hi Josh....,
Clay sculpture!!!!!!! Omg
Sup mike
😅 Just when I'd forgotten the cat, up it pops.
This is a lovely piece of art. However, you've had 8 helping paws ....
It’s eery how you slice and stuff with paper😱
