Eyes bugged out kind of WOW!!! Both to the GIGANTIC drumcarder reveal and the colors you ran through it. I need colors like that in my next spinning project ♥
I have the Big Brother too. I run the large card at max and the take up card at about 30% and it works great. Being able to just pull a pin and have the drum spin free is great when making roving right off the carder using a diz. Great features.
I really like it! My one and only complaint is that a lot of fiber build up on the licker unless I use commercially processed fiber. My Strauch has a different kinds of cloth on the licker and it doesn't build up at all.
@@FiberLoveDiary It won't build up if you don't pull back on the fiber as it goes in. Also, if your fiber is not well picked, it will build up and put a lot of wear and tear on your carder. I pulled the trigger and bought the triple picker (swing picker) from brother, and man, the fiber (now a cloud!) goes into the carder beautifully and no build up, pulls or the large drum like a dream. Worth every penny. So how the fiber is washed and picked makes a world of difference.
I have the Patrick Green and love it! I just got it from a friend and it works amazing! I also like that there are 2 different drums for finer wool or coarser wool.
It was honestly a little hard to decide, but I don't regret going with Sherry's recommendation. Maybe someday I will have both. The true dream for me is his cottage mill size carder. I'll never have space, and it'll never happen, but dreaming is fun.
How appropriate - a red hot batt for your first project on a red hot drum carder! Thanks for doing the demo and sharing some of your experiences with the Brother customer support. I’ve actually had my eye on them for a couple of years now as my preferred go-to drum carder company. I’m probably a little biased toward them, though, because I live in Washington, and they’re based in Oregon! I’m pleased to hear that your experience with them was so good! Makes me feel good about my instinct (LOL). I hope you get many hours of enjoyment from your drum carder, Trish, and I’m sure we all look forward to seeing what you produce with it! Take care!
This was my first Brother carder. I've never even used one at a spinning function before, so i did buy it a little bit on faith and the recommendation. I've been so happy!
Great review!!! The paper nerd in me was drooling more over the brown paper packing...love getting stuff in the mail just so I can have the brown paper for my granddaughters to draw on lol! But seriously, thanks for all your great videos!!
That's a really nice carder! Would love to have one myself! I have to get A spinning wheel first do far I've only got a drop spindel, I'm working on the spinning wheel! Lol. Have A Blessed Day All!
How exciting!! Ive been looking into getting a drum carder, but i dont really know where to start. Thanks for your review! Looking forward to your upcoming videos😁
Deciding where to start seems really daunting, i think. Even back when I got my first one in 2008, there was a lot to learn, but there is quite a bit more to choose from now. It is a fun tool to have though.
I want a carder. I've been thinking about getting a mini carder because of space in my house. Part of me is thinking the medium one to start with. But right now I am just thinking.(and drooling over everyone elses drum carder.)
I think space is a pretty big consideration, because they aren't simple to just bundle away in a cupboard somewhere sometimes. I only had carder dreams for a pretty good long time too, so I completely understand.
Thank you so much! I do think about it night and day and I have a pretty big list of things I want to try if I ever have time! There is still so much to learn! 😂
Still on my wish list. I didn't know Sherry will put drum carders on layaway. I will have to check that out. I am in her group, but I don't remember seeing her mention it. Thanks for sharing.
Yep, she says she doesn't really advertise because they sell themselves, but the layaway option was just so wonderful. I did have to make a certain deposit, but then I made smaller payments so it wasn't that bad.
@HegenerHomestead there's a lot of controversy that's happened with sherry since this video. So I assume that the link was removed just to cover bases. :)
Thank you for this amazing video -- a friend of my just got it and we were trying it out. She is not happy how much of her premium merino (18/19 micron) and premium angora (about 4" staple length) sticks to the intake drum. I noticed yours also had a "lot" of fibre stuck on there. Is this normal? Or have you figured out how to eliminate that much waste?
That's a gorgeous batt! This is a dream machine! I have a Louët 72tpi, and I'm not able to get the smoothness I'd like with 19 micron merino. So much information here (thank you!). I'd love an electric carder.... Hmmm. 90 tpi. So to process a finer fiber on 72 tpi, I should crank slowly? I'm so impatient! Lol. Thanks for the video.
Ok, so I had an Ashford that was 72 TPI, and if I wanted finer wools to be smooth, I had to go SO SLOW and feed the tiniest bit in at a time. I have really ended up liking this carder!
Thanks for sharing. I’ve just started spinning and now I think I need a carder. I’m wondering if I should start with a mini or spend a few hundred more and get the standard size. By the way. I LOVE the batt you made. Never spun a role lag. Hope to try that soon. .
My first one was an Ashford standard. It was really great up until I sold you, and honestly all I needed for quite a while. I Really need to get on spinning that batt. I bought some sequined yarn to play with it, and I'm itching to get going now. Thank you! 💜
Huge! Love it. I have a hand turned carder, my favorite fiber toy! Now I want a blending board. Do you have one? I have a couple “liked” on Etsy. I finally decided it will be too much trouble to make one. Lol
I know this is a couple of years later, but thank you for the review. I had no idea it was possible to put a drum carder on layaway! I've wanted one for over 10 years now. Unfortunately, it appears that Sherry's group is no longer accepting members, unless you are invited or wait until May 2022. Do you know how to get an invitation by chance?
@@FiberLoveDiary would love to see how it spins up. I have never spun a batt but I'm getting pretty good at spinning rolags. Made a blending board this year. It is such fun to play with.
I was looking at the Supercard… maybe I should get this one instead. Are you still happy with your choice? Ever tried the Supercard? I work mainly with fleece.
Trish I know this is an older video but I am just realizing that I need an electric drum carder due to severe wrist pain issues. My hand crank Brother handles my minimally prepped fibers ( hubbie helps to crank as it is challenging at times for me).Do you know of a really tough workhorse type electric drum carder that can handle minimally prepped fibers? I am looking to get an electric. Just thought I would ask but no worries if can’t answer. Thank you for the in-depth and honest review. 🙏💕
I haven't had the opportunity to try every brand, but i believe Strauch makes the toughest I've ever seen. The batts are smaller than the ones i get from the Brother, but that's why i kept my Strauch. I think it is very tough and the man that makes them took the time to talk to my husband about mine even though i bought it used. That's what I'd get if i were in your shoes ❤. I'm sorry you're in pain.
Trish you are sweet! No one ever (ok, rarely) answers when I comment on older videos and here you are taking such time and care to help me, you are really special ((hugs)). I will definitely look at the Strauch. Thank you for your kindness and I hope to see you back at the loom with some new weaving soon :-)))
@@lynnwittet1301 You won't have to wait long. I have a new project coming out here a week from Tuesday! Have fun with your motorized carder, whatever you end up getting!
I have been wanting a drum carder but only could do an electric one. I was looking into the brothers “little brother” one. I keep vacillating over it. Do you think happy with a smaller one? Does my question even make since? I know you cannot judge my happiness but I don’t know how else to ask it. 😳😂
If a smaller one was what I could fit into my space and budget, I would still want it. Does that help? I just really liked being able to feed it while it runs, so I don't have to take as much time setting up the feed, then cranking it.
Hello, thank you very much ! i´m also interested to have the same drumcarder, but they have 5 different tpi, which one you have? big greetings from Berlin, :) Gulnur
I got 90 TPI. I mostly use medium to fine fleeces if I get raw ones, and I didn't want the finest, because I don't like it as much for batts. I used to have an Ashford that was 72 TPI, but it was small, and with the 72, I had to card a finer fleece so slowly. Welcome!
Great video! I am shopping for an electric to save my hands and wrists. How noisy is this one? Will my husband complain if i am carding next to him while he watches TV?
I don't think i've ever had one quiet enough for that. This is my third electric one, but even the crank ones make some noise. I hate to give bad news!
You can pick the TPI on the drum you get, I think. I got the 90, because I think the happy medium is more for me. I can still use it on a fine fleece, but it is still really nice for batts. My wee Ashford hand crank was a 90, and I used it for everything in the beginning. It was really adaptive!
It's only an opinion, but i think the 90 is suitable for pretty much anything. I'm not sure how popular this opinion will be, but i really think sometimes the 120 is so close together that it can't really dig in and straighten the fibers out.
Eyes bugged out kind of WOW!!! Both to the GIGANTIC drumcarder reveal and the colors you ran through it. I need colors like that in my next spinning project ♥
Thank you! I had a little plastic shoe bin full of those fibers picked out and set aside for several months, so I was happy to dig into them. I do really like how that batt turned out!
