Speaking from experience: don't mix your airstones. If you have had the stone in freshwater, it is fine to put it in a saltwater pool. But not the other way around. Most marine salts have very high pH and the salt lingers in the airstone basically forever. It leeches back into the freshwater and makes it salty. It is fine to mix salt and feshwater filters, so long as you clean them and do not mix the sponges or media.
I love your videos! I've been doing research before buying my crabs. I already have a 20 gallon tank, but I'd love to have a pool where I can see my hermies swim. What's roughly the largest size pool that would work for a 20gal tank? Would 1 gallon be too much?
Love your channel and videos. So happy you're raising awareness about hermie care. Have you experimented with foggers such as the Reptifogger to help maintain humidity within the crabitats?
I know this is 5 months old, but hopefully you will see this, or maybe it will help someone else. Humidifiers, foggers, and misters are not good to put into your hermit crab tank. It can cause your substrate to flood, or even cause mold and bacterial blooms. If you are struggling with humidity, this channel has a couple videos on heat and humidity that I recommend you check out! You can add sphagnum moss to your tank and mist that as needed if you are looking for a way to help boost your humidity. Make sure your tank is sealed, you have the correct sized water pools, and are using an under the tank heater (placed on the side of your tank). The combination of these things help to create the correct environment in your tank for your hermit crabs. And be sure your hydrometer is giving you an accurate reading! You can test this by calibrating it.
Thank you for the reply. I don't have hermit crabs. I have a house full of reptiles, tarantulas, and milipedes plus my emperor scorpion just gave birth. RE the fogger, just something I was thinking about. I run foggers daily on several of my animals but not all the time. Usually at night for 15 minutes to make dew.

Hi I’ve got a question. I recently created 2 pools - 1 fresh and 1 salt water for my crabs. They don’t seem to ever submerge themselves. They usually just sit on the edge and use their limbs to “scoop” water. I was wondering if there’s really a need for the water pools to be deep enough for them to fully submerge? I could be saving quite a fair bit of space without the pools and replacing them with shallow dishes.
I know it's over a year later but I have 5.5 fresh with a beta fish and 5.5 macro algae salt in a 90 and I find it has been too much (they never seem to use the saltwater compared to the fresh) im planning on downsizing to a large Mason jar for the saltwater to give them more obstacles to climb on. 8 crabs active and friendly most days.
If I have a 20 gallon tank and doing smaller pools with just the air pump and air stones, Can I get away with 1X a week water changes? Would I need to prime the water during the week or just when doing the water change? Lastly, should the saltwater pool and fresh water pool be side by side, opposite ends of the tank, or same side of tank, with some space, decor between them? Thanks!

Hi Abby's Adventures. YAY for big pools! Sponge filters are great! So easy to maintain. You need to add prime only when you do water changes. The filter will do the job of keeping all the 'bad' stuff out of the water from there. Water changes should be done every 4-6 weeks (or if they look dirty). You can top off the water in-between water changes. For the saltwater pool, top it off with fresh water because the water evaporates not the salt. If you top off with more salt water, your salinity will get really high. Then, when you do your water change, fill it up with new saltwater. I hope this helps!

I definitely did not know about the selenity getting to high and have been topping off my salt water pool with the salt water, no wonder the crabbies have been staying away😂 I will certainly water it down a bit with freshwater and I was adding prime every 2 days with the sponge filters so I will definitely stop doing that as well! I got the coolest looking barnacle thingy to silicone on the tank above the freshwater pool to trickle down an aquarium tree back in to the pool for a waterfall effect, so there will be like extra filtration going on in the freshwater and hopefully can get my humidity up to 80, I can't get passed 75 even with the big filtered pools both with UTHs half against each and 3 moss pits, once again you ladies are such an inspiration and a guiding light in this community🦀😍
We feed baby brine to the babies when we are breeding. We have not tried it in the main tank. The biggest concern would be fouling up the water pools quickly. You would need to do more frequent water changes.
You are right and not joking about hermit crabs being strong, my hermit crabs climb the underside of all 4 sides of my glass tops after they climb up the wires of my Skull Rock waterfall wires and then they go to town but they do not get out because I have stuff on the top
Especially as they grow. We have some purple pinchers in a 2" shell opening, plus Brevi's that are in a 2 1/2" ... they can move BIG things in our tank. Pretty awesome animals!
@@CrabCentralStation Wow, how cool, I need a to get a 20 gallon tall tank for the two hermit crabs I have in my 10 gallon tank because they are getting to big for the tank, but right now I can not afford to buy a new 20 gallon tall tank, I have checked Facebook for the free ones and some of them are not even worth it and other one's people used them with other pets and have used bleach in the tanks to clean out the tanks and I will not use those tanks because of the residue left behind and the same with tanks that soap was used in the tank's, I was told that is bad. I only use apple spider vinegar to do my tank cleanings.
A pool large enough for you biggest crab to fully submerge in is perfect! We love to use super large Tupperware tubs or small 2 gallon/5 gallon fish tanks!

Hi Nora. I think 2.5g pools in a 55g tank might be too bug, especially is you put them toward the back of the tank by the heater. We used 2.5 in a 75g and a 90g.
Very curious, in this video you said to add the prime every couple days? Do you need to constantly be adding the prime? Or can you mix a gallon and keep using it?
Wonderful question! Prime is only effective for a 48 hour period. After that, it wears off completely. This is why you have to keep adding it, and cannot keep a pre-mixed jug!
Roe Jogan is correct, proper substrate will help to ensure your crab can molt properly. The other thing to be careful about while crabs are molting, make sure you do not rearrange or move decor. Moving heavy things around in the tank while crabs are down molting can cause a tunnel to cave in.
One thing to note, the amount of water vapor evaporating into the air from the pool only depends on the surface area and temperature, not the total volume of water

Awesome! I'm so glad our channel has helped you! It would be very difficult to combine 20g tanks because of their width. Exoterra tanks make the best toppers, but they are 18" wide. We do not recommend inverting regular tanks because they do not allow for maintenance access. They begin gathering condensation at the top and then literally rain down into the substrate causing a flood.

@@Stan_marsh_420_ here are the steps we take for our extoterra toppers: 1. You will need 4 pieces of glass cut. 2 small pieces that are stationary under each side of the exoterra. 2 larger pieces that will become the lids you take off for maintenance on the base tanks. 2. Buy some window/door expanding foam insulation and place it on all 4 sides of the exoterra that will be resting on the base tank. This will expand and fill all the gaps. 3. Duct tape around the edge of the exoterra tank where it meets the base tank to attach it securely. 4. Use clear packing tape (cut to size) and tape over the vent holes on the front of the exoterra topper. That is how we attach our toppers and keep consistent heat and humidity.

Great question! You do not have to have the bubblers if you have a filter, however we like to keep them because they help to keep our humidity in control.

I love your guys channel!! I recently got some hermit crabs because a friend of mine had them and was moving and couldn’t take them with her so I took them. She told me that they don’t fight or anything but I’ve had them for a week and the biggest crab has been pulling the other crabs shells off. Can you please give me information about this, like why this hermit crab is doing this?? Thank you!!
Hermit crabs need extra shells to be able to grow. If they do not have those, they will steal them from another crab. This can injure the shell jacked crab or even kill them. I'll link a video that tells you how to measure and what kind of shells to buy. There is a link to a shell store in the description as well. Hello! Question: You’ve said not to dig up buried hermit crabs. What if they’re semi-buried? My hermies like to partially bury themselves into the substrate; I can still see their shells. What does this mean? If I have to do matenance or remodel, should I wait for them to move, or is it okay to move them myself? Thanks!

They don't seem to be a threat to one another. However, the water needs for a marine crab I'm guessing are bigger than what the average land hermit crab pool is. I have a 10g saltwater pool, but that is pretty significant compared to most. I believe the salinity needs are different as well. Marine crabs need a high salinity than the land crabs, although I don't believe a high salinity will hurt the land crabs. You will need a saltwater test kit and refractometer to test water quality and salinity. Just some things to think about.

I’m asking because the hermits we rescued were advertised as land hermit crabs, but were actually the marine striped hermit crab. We have them in a 25 gallon with a 4.5 gallon saltwater tank with the conditions they need, but I noticed they spend half of their time on the sand outside the water. We are certain they are marine hermit crabs. A friend of mine is moving and had to rehome hers and I was wondering if I could take her smallest purple puncher in. What do you think?

We have a 29 gallon tank for our two crabs and have trouble with high humidity. Would one salt water pool and one fresh water drinking dish be ok? I'd like to give them a fresh water and salt water pool but unfortunately I think our humidity would be you high. Is one pool ok?
No, they need both pools deep enough to fully submerge in. Try moving the pools to the front of the tank away from the heat mat. You can make the two pools a bit smaller to help too.

Hi Ariana. Five is not too many for your 40 gallon tank for right now. As they grow bigger though you will need to upgrade their tank (maybe in a couple years). You will eventually need to look for a 55 gallon tank so that they have safe space to molt in. Good Job!
Filtered pools just need to be topped off as the water drops (use fresh water to top off your saltwater pool because water evaporates bit thebsalt does not). Do water changes every month. (When you do a water change mix up new saltwater for that pool). You only need to Prime when you do the water change because the filters are doing the job of what Prime does.
Yes, I think that is going to cause too much condensation and lead to potential flooding in your tank. Plus, that is going to take up a lot of space in a small tank.
I went and got a small shop vac for 30 bucks. Fast and I can use it for other stuff around the house. Probably about the same you would pay for one of those tubes, depending on where you get them. Just an FYI for those that are busy and want it done fast.
The rocks are called Dragon stones. They can be purchased online ot at pet stores in the aquarium section. The plants are from the fresh water tanks, they are live plants.
I just went to our pets store and they had several sizes of critter keepers so I’m a bit confused where it’s mentioned they are too big for a 40 gallon tank. We are actually upgrading to a 40 gallon. I went and put several sizes inside of the tank to try to get an idea first and it looks like a small critter keeper might work. It’s a 9”L 6”W 6.5”H. Does anyone know if that seems to be ok?
I am setting up a 20 gallon long tank for 2 hermit crabs (small purple pinchers). I purchased my 2 pools from Etsy (size small), they have bubblers built in them so the bubblers do not take up any room. I have heard that I can use sponge filters to make my water last longer- what size sponge filter do I need for a pool with these measurements: The pool itself is 4 inches wide x 6 inches long x 3 inches deep - it holds roughly 2.7705 cups of water. Also- how often should I remove all of the water in both pools and put newly treated water in with mini sponge filters (if I can find ones small enough to fit) and the bubblers? I can easily remove these pools to do a complete water change- I mainly want to do this so if I go on vacation no one has to mess with my water pools :)
If you can find small enough filters you can do partial water changes (or full changes since your pools are small enough and easy enough to remove) once a month. Super easy!

M since I really started to get into watching your tanks the weather has turn really rainy and I haven't been able to check out the tank at my parent's house because it's outside near a old storage barn. @@CrabCentralStation well the weather held up well enough for me to go do some more remodeling at my parent's house and to check out that aquarium tank as well It's dimensions will be in width, height, and depth. it's not exact on the numbers but I'm rounding it to the nearest inch and it's 2.5'x1.5'x1'. If my math is right I think that's 28ish gallons.
We boil new shells. Wood, sticks, bark we clean in prime water and then bake on low. Leaves, flowers, moss we wash in prime water and freeze. Decor items like bowls, plants, climbing decor, we wash in prime treated water and air dry.
Hey I’m not sure if you will see this but, I want to get 2 2.5 gallon tanks and use them for saltwater and freshwater, but I don’t understand how to do the saltwater, do I just make the salt water and then pour it in the tank and filter it from there and also have a bubbler, and how would I clean it? For freshwater am I just putting freshwater with prime in there and filtering it and adding a bubbler? And then I’d change them every once a month?
Yes, that is exactly what you need to do. Make sure your base tank is big enough to have those large pools. Too big of a pool in too small of a tank creates too much humidity and can lead to floods in the substrate. For cleaning, you just need to buy a siphon and a bucket. That’s how you get the old water out of the pools. Then just use a paper towel to wipe out the pool. Then fill it up with the clean waters.

Hi Shirley! Check out our other videos for more clear and direct guidance. We suggest starting with a 20 gallon tank and two large crabs or three small crabs! The bedding should be 5 parts sand to 1 part of the cocofiber and at least 6 inches deep!
What is the proper salinity level for the hermit crab salt water pool and what to do you use to measure that if you're doing partial water changes in a salt water tank? Just asking since as water evaporates the salt becomes more concentrated and I'm worried about it getting too high I'm my 5 gallon stationary pools. I read that reef tanks need 1.024 - 1.026 is that the same or different for hermies?
Hi Kayla Urban. Great question! You are exactly correct, water evaporates but salt does not. Any time our water levels drop we add fresh prime treated water. At partial water changes we add salt water back into the tank using the directions on the box (reef crystals). Then we test the salinity using a refractometer (which we have on hand from our breeding program). You want the salinity to be similar to reef tanks as you mentioned in your comment. I wanna cry.. I thought bigger pools was better so now I have to remove mine. Mine are way to big for my tank. Hope my hermits are ok. The humidity has been a little high lately
those are plastic vines and plants that you can find in the fish section of most pet stores! We use them in our water tanks because they provide ways for the hermit crabs to get in and out of the water tanks.
We use exoterra tanks as toppers because of the open front doors. Take the top screen off the tank and turn it upside down over the two bottom base tanks. We usually put some expanding window/door insulation in between the two tanks to fill in all the gaps. Finally, we use black duct tape around the outside of the two tanks to secure them together. Does that help?
Hello....very new to this but I have fallen head over heels for my hermies. I have 2 small in a 10gallon right now but I just went and bought a 90gallon tank and want to set up actual permanent pools inside the 90....what size pools do you recommend for this? Thank you so much!!
@Crab Central Station yes the tank is set up now. I adopted 4 more off the Facebook adoption page so I now have 6 total. 4 went down to molt immediately, 2 have came up already and they are gorgeous. I enjoy watching them when they're active.
I set up pools yesterday and upgraded tanks. I struggled with humidity but now my humidity is perfect however I am having some splashing and my pump is not turned up high, I have it low just some bubbles but some is getting on my substrate and I don’t want to cause mold. I have a tray underneath but it’s splashing going u see the Ramps. Since the ramps have holes it’s just going through. What can I do?
One way to help eliminate as much splashing is to add a splash guard. You can do this by cutting the lid for your container. I'd cut it slightly less than half way, this way your crabs have plenty of room to get in. Make sure you also cut a hole for the air tube. Then place the smaller cut half on the back half of your container.

@@CrabCentralStation Yay also I got my crabs in January they have a large branch that goes up to a reptile hannock which has a ladder that goes to a moss pit. They are about 5 inches above the ground and they don’t climb. How do I get them to climb?
Oh I also have a small 6 inch plant that goes up to the hammock. With a terra-cotta pot and a hamster week they could use to get onto the branch or they could climb the branch from the substrate. The heat is usually from 75 to 79 degrees
Crab Central, just a suggestion: I think you should research how water aquariums work, the functions of creating a stable tank should be your focus and how the different sizes of tanks have different requirements to maintain a stable water environment. Yes, you have hermit crabs that don't live solely in water but many of your videos that discuss water requirements, including those with small Tupperware sized pools, you are over cleaning, over priming and over changing to much of the water. In a small Tupperware bowl scenario, keeping a 2 gallon tank that you have and maintain water stability for using that water to refresh these small containers. Larger containers and aquarium sized pools should use the concepts for fish aquariums. Also your larger aquariums you are using does not contain proper subtrain under your rocks. There is a purpose to small stone aquarium gravel in keeping a healthy stable water environment and the subtrain needs to be the right depth for the size of aquarium. Any aquatic or subaquatic species needs heathy bacteria in their water supply. The set up you are showing are to sterile and potentially harmful if at the very least completely unnatural. As well as you are overusing chemicals and creating more work than is necessary. Once an aquarium is water stable and you have done your research on this subject, you have a better understanding of how to maintain this ecosystem because basically you are creating a completely different ecosystem within another ecosystem that has very different properties. I know, you are thinking that your crabs are flourishing, well that's because their land ecosystem, food , humidity is optimum and mask the issues you are creating with their water ecosystem. I am under the impression that you have multiple tanks, pick one, do the research using a fish tank with some basic beginner's fish and practice how to sustain an aquarium. It is trickier than you may realize to get the aquarium to maintain for a few months with a consistent proper stable water environment. Once you have done this it will become evident what I am talking about. Then test the strategies you have learnt on just one of your hermit crab enclosures to see how much this will simplify and provide a more healthy water environment for your crabs. Good luck and take care.

Land Hermit Crab water care is different than aquarium care for marine life. Land Hermit crabs do not live in the water, it is a hydration source for them. If a person would like to create a bioactive enclosure, your suggestions are good to note. The only chemical we are adding to our water is Prime, which If you visit their site, you will read that you can not "over prime" water. We have testing kits, both fresh and salt, and test our water regularly - which we advise others to do as well. Ultimately it comes down to the difference of creating an aquatic LIVING condition in your aquarium, which is not needed for land hermit crabs. The majority of crab keepers don't have pools large enough to consider aquariums, but rather water containers for drinking. Our videos are based on Hermit crab care, not aquarium care or aquatic life. If you look at our breeding videos, you will recognize that we do have an understanding of water care and how to properly care for our hermit crabs. It is very rare to have hermit crabs breeding in captivity..... yet we do.... so we must be doing it right. The advice we give on our channel is research based and comes from marine biggest and hermit crab keepers that have been practicing hermit crab husbandry for over 20 years successfully. Perhaps you could do some research on the difference between hermit crab care and marine life... there is a bug difference in how to care for each of them.
Hi Emily. It's best to buy a water quality test kit and change the water when the quality is poor. We do partial water changes every 2-3 weeks. As far as the filter media maintenance, all filters are different. Its best to follow the suggested maintenance listed on the filter package.
Your whole tank is 3 gallons? I highly suggest getting at tank least 20 gallons. 3 is absolutely too small. You can keep them in a large plastic tub until you can upgrade. 3 gallon tank is way too small to fit everything you need including the pools

Speaking from experience: don't mix your airstones. If you have had the stone in freshwater, it is fine to put it in a saltwater pool. But not the other way around. Most marine salts have very high pH and the salt lingers in the airstone basically forever. It leeches back into the freshwater and makes it salty. It is fine to mix salt and feshwater filters, so long as you clean them and do not mix the sponges or media.
We only have salt water for the zoeae.... but this is super good to know regardless. Thanks for sharing!

Have you experimented with foggers such as the Reptifogger to help maintain humidity within the crabitats?
I know this is 5 months old, but hopefully you will see this, or maybe it will help someone else. Humidifiers, foggers, and misters are not good to put into your hermit crab tank. It can cause your substrate to flood, or even cause mold and bacterial blooms.
If you are struggling with humidity, this channel has a couple videos on heat and humidity that I recommend you check out!
You can add sphagnum moss to your tank and mist that as needed if you are looking for a way to help boost your humidity.
Make sure your tank is sealed, you have the correct sized water pools, and are using an under the tank heater (placed on the side of your tank). The combination of these things help to create the correct environment in your tank for your hermit crabs. And be sure your hydrometer is giving you an accurate reading! You can test this by calibrating it.

RE the fogger, just something I was thinking about. I run foggers daily on several of my animals but not all the time. Usually at night for 15 minutes to make dew.

Hi I’ve got a question. I recently created 2 pools - 1 fresh and 1 salt water for my crabs.
They don’t seem to ever submerge themselves. They usually just sit on the edge and use their limbs to “scoop” water.
I was wondering if there’s really a need for the water pools to be deep enough for them to fully submerge?
I could be saving quite a fair bit of space without the pools and replacing them with shallow dishes.

I know it's over a year later but I have 5.5 fresh with a beta fish and 5.5 macro algae salt in a 90 and I find it has been too much (they never seem to use the saltwater compared to the fresh) im planning on downsizing to a large Mason jar for the saltwater to give them more obstacles to climb on. 8 crabs active and friendly most days.

Interested in adding advanced pools when I buy my 75 gallon aquarium. Should there be any worries considering the weight of the sand (if it's buried)? I'm scared it'll crack and leak from the stress surrounding it
I've never had a problem with mine doing that, but I use glass aquariums for my pools, not plastic tubs.

Hi Abby's Adventures. YAY for big pools! Sponge filters are great! So easy to maintain. You need to add prime only when you do water changes. The filter will do the job of keeping all the 'bad' stuff out of the water from there. Water changes should be done every 4-6 weeks (or if they look dirty). You can top off the water in-between water changes. For the saltwater pool, top it off with fresh water because the water evaporates not the salt. If you top off with more salt water, your salinity will get really high. Then, when you do your water change, fill it up with new saltwater. I hope this helps!

I definitely did not know about the selenity getting to high and have been topping off my salt water pool with the salt water, no wonder the crabbies have been staying away😂 I will certainly water it down a bit with freshwater and I was adding prime every 2 days with the sponge filters so I will definitely stop doing that as well! I got the coolest looking barnacle thingy to silicone on the tank above the freshwater pool to trickle down an aquarium tree back in to the pool for a waterfall effect, so there will be like extra filtration going on in the freshwater and hopefully can get my humidity up to 80, I can't get passed 75 even with the big filtered pools both with UTHs half against each and 3 moss pits, once again you ladies are such an inspiration and a guiding light in this community🦀😍
Have you ever put baby brine shrimp in the water pools for them to eat? If so was it worth it or not?
We feed baby brine to the babies when we are breeding. We have not tried it in the main tank. The biggest concern would be fouling up the water pools quickly. You would need to do more frequent water changes.
Would suggest a "in line check valve" to prevent pool from syphoning back to pump, in case of power loss.

You are right and not joking about hermit crabs being strong, my hermit crabs climb the underside of all 4 sides of my glass tops after they climb up the wires of my Skull Rock waterfall wires and then they go to town but they do not get out because I have stuff on the top
Especially as they grow. We have some purple pinchers in a 2" shell opening, plus Brevi's that are in a 2 1/2" ... they can move BIG things in our tank. Pretty awesome animals!
@@CrabCentralStation Wow, how cool, I need a to get a 20 gallon tall tank for the two hermit crabs I have in my 10 gallon tank because they are getting to big for the tank, but right now I can not afford to buy a new 20 gallon tall tank, I have checked Facebook for the free ones and some of them are not even worth it and other one's people used them with other pets and have used bleach in the tanks to clean out the tanks and I will not use those tanks because of the residue left behind and the same with tanks that soap was used in the tank's, I was told that is bad. I only use apple spider vinegar to do my tank cleanings.

A pool large enough for you biggest crab to fully submerge in is perfect! We love to use super large Tupperware tubs or small 2 gallon/5 gallon fish tanks!

We use Quikrete premium play sand in the white bag from Home Depot.

Hi Nora. I think 2.5g pools in a 55g tank might be too bug, especially is you put them toward the back of the tank by the heater. We used 2.5 in a 75g and a 90g.
14:22 there is a 3 in 1 Internal power filter, it includes aerator so no need to use a separate one.
Very curious, in this video you said to add the prime every couple days? Do you need to constantly be adding the prime? Or can you mix a gallon and keep using it?
Wonderful question! Prime is only effective for a 48 hour period. After that, it wears off completely. This is why you have to keep adding it, and cannot keep a pre-mixed jug!

You can not over prime... so no worries there.
I'm in the stages of setting up my tank before I adopt. To save space, can I not put out the 2 water dishes and the crabs can drink from the pools?
Yes, 100% the crabs will drink from the pools. Just make sure you have a safe way in and out of the pools so that they don't get stuck and drown.
If a hermit crabs tunnel collapses on it will it be able to dig itself out? I’m so paranoid that it will collapse on mine!
As long as your substrate is properly moist they shouldn't collapse!
Roe Jogan is correct, proper substrate will help to ensure your crab can molt properly. The other thing to be careful about while crabs are molting, make sure you do not rearrange or move decor. Moving heavy things around in the tank while crabs are down molting can cause a tunnel to cave in.
One thing to note, the amount of water vapor evaporating into the air from the pool only depends on the surface area and temperature, not the total volume of water

Awesome! I'm so glad our channel has helped you! It would be very difficult to combine 20g tanks because of their width. Exoterra tanks make the best toppers, but they are 18" wide. We do not recommend inverting regular tanks because they do not allow for maintenance access. They begin gathering condensation at the top and then literally rain down into the substrate causing a flood.

@@Stan_marsh_420_ here are the steps we take for our extoterra toppers:
1. You will need 4 pieces of glass cut. 2 small pieces that are stationary under each side of the exoterra. 2 larger pieces that will become the lids you take off for maintenance on the base tanks.
2. Buy some window/door expanding foam insulation and place it on all 4 sides of the exoterra that will be resting on the base tank. This will expand and fill all the gaps.
3. Duct tape around the edge of the exoterra tank where it meets the base tank to attach it securely.
4. Use clear packing tape (cut to size) and tape over the vent holes on the front of the exoterra topper.
That is how we attach our toppers and keep consistent heat and humidity.

Great question! You do not have to have the bubblers if you have a filter, however we like to keep them because they help to keep our humidity in control.

I love your guys channel!! I recently got some hermit crabs because a friend of mine had them and was moving and couldn’t take them with her so I took them. She told me that they don’t fight or anything but I’ve had them for a week and the biggest crab has been pulling the other crabs shells off. Can you please give me information about this, like why this hermit crab is doing this?? Thank you!!
Hermit crabs need extra shells to be able to grow. If they do not have those, they will steal them from another crab. This can injure the shell jacked crab or even kill them. I'll link a video that tells you how to measure and what kind of shells to buy. There is a link to a shell store in the description as well. I would also feed more protein, it should be 50% of their diet. If they are lacking nutrition they will cannibalize.

Hello! Question: You’ve said not to dig up buried hermit crabs. What if they’re semi-buried? My hermies like to partially bury themselves into the substrate; I can still see their shells. What does this mean? If I have to do matenance or remodel, should I wait for them to move, or is it okay to move them myself? Thanks!
It's best to wait until they are 100% on the surface before moving them to do tank maintenance.

@@CrabCentralStation Kind of curious, but I couldn’t find any info online. How to land hermit crabs interact with marine hermies? Both are in Florida and many other areas.
They don't seem to be a threat to one another. However, the water needs for a marine crab I'm guessing are bigger than what the average land hermit crab pool is. I have a 10g saltwater pool, but that is pretty significant compared to most. I believe the salinity needs are different as well. Marine crabs need a high salinity than the land crabs, although I don't believe a high salinity will hurt the land crabs. You will need a saltwater test kit and refractometer to test water quality and salinity. Just some things to think about.

I’m asking because the hermits we rescued were advertised as land hermit crabs, but were actually the marine striped hermit crab. We have them in a 25 gallon with a 4.5 gallon saltwater tank with the conditions they need, but I noticed they spend half of their time on the sand outside the water. We are certain they are marine hermit crabs. A friend of mine is moving and had to rehome hers and I was wondering if I could take her smallest purple puncher in. What do you think?

We have a 29 gallon tank for our two crabs and have trouble with high humidity. Would one salt water pool and one fresh water drinking dish be ok? I'd like to give them a fresh water and salt water pool but unfortunately I think our humidity would be you high. Is one pool ok?
No, they need both pools deep enough to fully submerge in. Try moving the pools to the front of the tank away from the heat mat. You can make the two pools a bit smaller to help too.
I have two three gallon water tanks with a filter, one salt and the other well-water. How often should I change the water and do I need to prime well-water?
We recommend priming once every couple days just to be safe! We change our filtered pools twice a month.

Hi Ariana. Five is not too many for your 40 gallon tank for right now. As they grow bigger though you will need to upgrade their tank (maybe in a couple years). You will eventually need to look for a 55 gallon tank so that they have safe space to molt in. Good Job!
Can you put bubblers in pools in a 10 gallon tank?
Yes! However, I would buy the regulator so that you can keep the flow down to a very low bubble.

Filtered pools just need to be topped off as the water drops (use fresh water to top off your saltwater pool because water evaporates bit thebsalt does not). Do water changes every month. (When you do a water change mix up new saltwater for that pool). You only need to Prime when you do the water change because the filters are doing the job of what Prime does.

Yes, I think that is going to cause too much condensation and lead to potential flooding in your tank. Plus, that is going to take up a lot of space in a small tank.
Can the fresh water pool be smaller since its only to drink from? So have like a 1 gallon salt pool and a small bowl for fresh water?
The pools can be different sizes, but, both pools need to be deep enough for the crabs to fully submerge in.
I went and got a small shop vac for 30 bucks. Fast and I can use it for other stuff around the house. Probably about the same you would pay for one of those tubes, depending on where you get them. Just an FYI for those that are busy and want it done fast.

The rocks are called Dragon stones. They can be purchased online ot at pet stores in the aquarium section. The plants are from the fresh water tanks, they are live plants.
I just went to our pets store and they had several sizes of critter keepers so I’m a bit confused where it’s mentioned they are too big for a 40 gallon tank. We are actually upgrading to a 40 gallon. I went and put several sizes inside of the tank to try to get an idea first and it looks like a small critter keeper might work. It’s a 9”L 6”W 6.5”H. Does anyone know if that seems to be ok?
I am setting up a 20 gallon long tank for 2 hermit crabs (small purple pinchers). I purchased my 2 pools from Etsy (size small), they have bubblers built in them so the bubblers do not take up any room.
I have heard that I can use sponge filters to make my water last longer- what size sponge filter do I need for a pool with these measurements:
The pool itself is 4 inches wide x 6 inches long x 3 inches deep - it holds roughly 2.7705 cups of water.
Also- how often should I remove all of the water in both pools and put newly treated water in with mini sponge filters (if I can find ones small enough to fit) and the bubblers?
I can easily remove these pools to do a complete water change- I mainly want to do this so if I go on vacation no one has to mess with my water pools :)
If you can find small enough filters you can do partial water changes (or full changes since your pools are small enough and easy enough to remove) once a month. Super easy!

Hi looking into getting hermit crabs they would be in my room so I was wondering should I avoid lotions candles air sprays perfume? And should I get air purifier since my dog is in my room also?
Once you have your tank set up and sealed, it should be okay. I would maybe just not have the candle right next to the tank.

M since I really started to get into watching your tanks the weather has turn really rainy and I haven't been able to check out the tank at my parent's house because it's outside near a old storage barn. It's dimensions will be in width, height, and depth. it's not exact on the numbers but I'm rounding it to the nearest inch and it's 2.5'x1.5'x1'. If my math is right I think that's 28ish gallons.

We boil new shells. Wood, sticks, bark we clean in prime water and then bake on low. Leaves, flowers, moss we wash in prime water and freeze. Decor items like bowls, plants, climbing decor, we wash in prime treated water and air dry.
Hey I’m not sure if you will see this but, I want to get 2 2.5 gallon tanks and use them for saltwater and freshwater, but I don’t understand how to do the saltwater, do I just make the salt water and then pour it in the tank and filter it from there and also have a bubbler, and how would I clean it? For freshwater am I just putting freshwater with prime in there and filtering it and adding a bubbler? And then I’d change them every once a month?
Yes, that is exactly what you need to do. Make sure your base tank is big enough to have those large pools. Too big of a pool in too small of a tank creates too much humidity and can lead to floods in the substrate.
For cleaning, you just need to buy a siphon and a bucket. That’s how you get the old water out of the pools. Then just use a paper towel to wipe out the pool. Then fill it up with the clean waters.

I was looking at a bubbler on Amazon and someone said if the power goes out the water can get sucked in? Did I read that wrong or is that possible.
That is possible but your pump will come with a safety valve in the box. Just follow the directions to attach it, super easy.

I'm new at this fun stuff. I wanted to ask, how many large crabs for a 10 gallon tank? And is sand the only bedding to use? Because the pet store sent me home with a coconut type stuff.
Hi Shirley! Check out our other videos for more clear and direct guidance. We suggest starting with a 20 gallon tank and two large crabs or three small crabs! The bedding should be 5 parts sand to 1 part of the cocofiber and at least 6 inches deep!

What is the proper salinity level for the hermit crab salt water pool and what to do you use to measure that if you're doing partial water changes in a salt water tank? Just asking since as water evaporates the salt becomes more concentrated and I'm worried about it getting too high I'm my 5 gallon stationary pools. I read that reef tanks need 1.024 - 1.026 is that the same or different for hermies?

Hi Kayla Urban. Great question! You are exactly correct, water evaporates but salt does not. Any time our water levels drop we add fresh prime treated water. At partial water changes we add salt water back into the tank using the directions on the box (reef crystals). Then we test the salinity using a refractometer (which we have on hand from our breeding program). You want the salinity to be similar to reef tanks as you mentioned in your comment. I wanna cry.. I thought bigger pools was better so now I have to remove mine. Mine are way to big for my tank. Hope my hermits are ok. The humidity has been a little high lately

those are plastic vines and plants that you can find in the fish section of most pet stores! We use them in our water tanks because they provide ways for the hermit crabs to get in and out of the water tanks.
As long as your largest crab can fully submerge into the salt and freshwater, you are good to go.

How many gallon water pools could I use in a 55 gallon? Would 1 gallon each be too much humidity? Also How many hermits for that amount of space?
1 Gallon Pools will be perfect for a 55 gallon tank. You can have 5 crabs in that space
How do you connect tanks?
We use exoterra tanks as toppers because of the open front doors. Take the top screen off the tank and turn it upside down over the two bottom base tanks. We usually put some expanding window/door insulation in between the two tanks to fill in all the gaps. Finally, we use black duct tape around the outside of the two tanks to secure them together. Does that help?

Hello....very new to this but I have fallen head over heels for my hermies. I have 2 small in a 10gallon right now but I just went and bought a 90gallon tank and want to set up actual permanent pools inside the 90....what size pools do you recommend for this? Thank you so much!!

@Crab Central Station yes the tank is set up now. I adopted 4 more off the Facebook adoption page so I now have 6 total. 4 went down to molt immediately, 2 have came up already and they are gorgeous. I enjoy watching them when they're active.

How often to do you have to prime your water with permanent pools? Would it still be every two days?
I set up pools yesterday and upgraded tanks. I struggled with humidity but now my humidity is perfect however I am having some splashing and my pump is not turned up high, I have it low just some bubbles but some is getting on my substrate and I don’t want to cause mold. I have a tray underneath but it’s splashing going u see the Ramps. Since the ramps have holes it’s just going through. What can I do?
Have you had any success yet? I have the same issue in my 90 gallon with 2.5 pools I cannot for the life of me get the splashing to stop lol.
@@ravagedcore131 I did! I ordered pools on Etsy and I no longer have any splashing or anything. Ordered from the lucky crab co.
One way to help eliminate as much splashing is to add a splash guard. You can do this by cutting the lid for your container. I'd cut it slightly less than half way, this way your crabs have plenty of room to get in. Make sure you also cut a hole for the air tube. Then place the smaller cut half on the back half of your container.

Can you filter the well water through a Brita jug? Would that make it safe?

You can use the Brita water and just continue to use the Seachum Prime.
Will the hermit crabs try to pick at or eat the aquarium tubing?

@@CrabCentralStation Yay also I got my crabs in January they have a large branch that goes up to a reptile hannock which has a ladder that goes to a moss pit. They are about 5 inches above the ground and they don’t climb. How do I get them to climb?
Oh I also have a small 6 inch plant that goes up to the hammock. With a terra-cotta pot and a hamster week they could use to get onto the branch or they could climb the branch from the substrate. The heat is usually from 75 to 79 degrees
Crab Central, just a suggestion: I think you should research how water aquariums work, the functions of creating a stable tank should be your focus and how the different sizes of tanks have different requirements to maintain a stable water environment.
Yes, you have hermit crabs that don't live solely in water but many of your videos that discuss water requirements, including those with small Tupperware sized pools, you are over cleaning, over priming and over changing to much of the water. In a small Tupperware bowl scenario, keeping a 2 gallon tank that you have and maintain water stability for using that water to refresh these small containers. Larger containers and aquarium sized pools should use the concepts for fish aquariums. Also your larger aquariums you are using does not contain proper subtrain under your rocks. There is a purpose to small stone aquarium gravel in keeping a healthy stable water environment and the subtrain needs to be the right depth for the size of aquarium. Any aquatic or subaquatic species needs heathy bacteria in their water supply. The set up you are showing are to sterile and potentially harmful if at the very least completely unnatural. As well as you are overusing chemicals and creating more work than is necessary. Once an aquarium is water stable and you have done your research on this subject, you have a better understanding of how to maintain this ecosystem because basically you are creating a completely different ecosystem within another ecosystem that has very different properties.
I know, you are thinking that your crabs are flourishing, well that's because their land ecosystem, food , humidity is optimum and mask the issues you are creating with their water ecosystem.
I am under the impression that you have multiple tanks, pick one, do the research using a fish tank with some basic beginner's fish and practice how to sustain an aquarium. It is trickier than you may realize to get the aquarium to maintain for a few months with a consistent proper stable water environment. Once you have done this it will become evident what I am talking about. Then test the strategies you have learnt on just one of your hermit crab enclosures to see how much this will simplify and provide a more healthy water environment for your crabs.

@AmandaHugandKiss411 We appreciate your comment. I believe you are coming at this with aquarium keeping in mind. Land Hermit Crab water care is different than aquarium care for marine life. Land Hermit crabs do not live in the water, it is a hydration source for them. If a person would like to create a bioactive enclosure, your suggestions are good to note. The only chemical we are adding to our water is Prime, which If you visit their site, you will read that you can not "over prime" water. We have testing kits, both fresh and salt, and test our water regularly - which we advise others to do as well. Ultimately it comes down to the difference of creating an aquatic LIVING condition in your aquarium, which is not needed for land hermit crabs. The majority of crab keepers don't have pools large enough to consider aquariums, but rather water containers for drinking. Our videos are based on Hermit crab care, not aquarium care or aquatic life. If you look at our breeding videos, you will recognize that we do have an understanding of water care and how to properly care for our hermit crabs. It is very rare to have hermit crabs breeding in captivity..... yet we do.... so we must be doing it right. The advice we give on our channel is research based and comes from marine biggest and hermit crab keepers that have been practicing hermit crab husbandry for over 20 years successfully. Perhaps you could do some research on the difference between hermit crab care and marine life... there is a bug difference in how to care for each of them.
How often do you change the media & how often do you change filtered water?
Hi Emily. It's best to buy a water quality test kit and change the water when the quality is poor. We do partial water changes every 2-3 weeks. As far as the filter media maintenance, all filters are different. Its best to follow the suggested maintenance listed on the filter package.

Your whole tank is 3 gallons? I highly suggest getting at tank least 20 gallons. 3 is absolutely too small. You can keep them in a large plastic tub until you can upgrade. 3 gallon tank is way too small to fit everything you need including the pools
