So this video didn’t go as planned, by the end you hear the sad news, but I think the tank turned out great and my crabs are loving it. Hey Lori! I had a question, I am thinking about spending money on an Exo-Terra for my 2 hermit crabs. I have had them for about 2 years and they are happy and thriving in a 30 gallon tall. I was thinking of buying the one like you use to have, the square one, do you think my crabs would be happy in it? It’s expensive and I kind of want to find out if I should spend the money on it, because I think my crabs would be super happy and thrive even more. And I could have a lot more easy access to the tank.
I am so sorry for your loss😭😭 I also wanted to let you know how much you helped me care correctly for the hermit crabs I have had for almost 4 years now. If I had not started watching your channel, my hermit crabs might not be as healthy and happy as they are and might not be alive today.
I just got a 20 gallon long and my crabs love it, and your videos have been so helpful and insightful. Thankyou for making your videos and im so sorry for your loss
I know how it feels. I had a hermit crab for 3 weeks and then he passed. I did everything I could, like you did. I have 2 hermit crabs and I have had them for 15 months. They will enjoy their tank 😊
They’re hella stressed when we get them. They’ve been so abused by the time they’re ours, sometimes coming home is the final stressor that kills them (they were going to die soon whether we took them or not, but at least we could give them a comfortable home. I lost two crabs. One from stress and the other died from a flood in the tank (i actually think one of my water dishes was leaking, not a problem now as I have two critter keepers for their water (one is a gallon and the other is a liter. I meant to get another liter one as my crabs are small, but you know what? We’re gonna roll with it.

Hi! The tank turned out great and I'm really sorry for your loss. However, I have noticed that you don't really feed your crabs protein. I understand that you've had your crabs for 10 years and they've been healthy but protein really is an essential part of a hermit crab's diet and I hope that you can start adding it into your crabs' diet as well.
they're also missing chitin, omega fats, and cholesterol!!! they definitely need some more fresh meats and eggs. even adding some nuts and seeds can help
2 questions, how do you actually know if your crabs are molting, also I have recently inherited 2 crabs one is really big and I can't seem to find shells for him any thoughts
It’s hard to tell but if they go down and stay for a while, they could be mounting, if you see they changed shells, they may have molted recently. But never dig them up :)
I have 2 hermit crabs at college. I'm trying to figure out what to do for Christmas break. I don't want to try to bring their 20 gallon home on a 3 hour car ride, but I am going to have to be home for a month. I've came to the conclusion that a bin cage might be the best option because it will hold humidity really well on the drive and I can leave them in there for the duration of break as temporary housing. This way, when I come back after break I can leave them in there for a couple of weeks to destress from the car ride as well. What do you guys think? Is there a better solution?
This is an awesome awesome video. I’m so sorry for your loss. I lost one last month. I have four in a 40 gallon. They only thing I’m wondering is why you don’t do the 5:1 ratio of play sand to coco fiber? Keep on crabbing ❤️
I'm late to seeing this video. but I hope to go by your standards and redo a snake pvc enclosure for some hermits in the future. I'll have to use some plexi to add a higher lip for substrate but the enclosure is almost a 4ft by 2ft by 13in high. thinking of doing a radiant heat panel on the top, it heats the air but the surface itself doesn't get hot to the touch
I have two hermit crabs my self one is doing really good and my second one has been buried for two weeks now I believe and I just move them to a new tank

Hey I was wondering if anyone could help me out !! I got 3 new hermies in a 30 gallon tank and I am new to this ! I noticed one of my hermies was not moving for a couple days and when I went to check on it it’s legs were all like ripped off like super clean , and it’s pincher was off too, 4 legs and one pincher, I’m not sure if I maybe don’t have their diet right yet or maybe not enough protein? My heart is completely broken ! 😭 someone please help me
And if you can please help me with what they need to eat! I have been giving them raw shrimp and veggies but they haven’t even touched it ! Please help me out 😭😭😭
I feel like I am completely doing this wrong ! I don’t even know what to feed them and your videos help a lot , do you suggest any foods ? Any thing will help 😭😭😭😭
I think they will be happy with some climbing structures! Hermit crabs love to climb! That may be why yours stay buried. I made my cousin a similar setup with some suction cup hammocks and some cococoir sheets on the sides for climbing and they love it! Absolutely love to climb!
oops I just put the new one in with the other one and he is fine. My son almost killed the old one. He never gave it water. They are both fine now and I take care of them.
I really like your videos, but you’ve consistently had poor husbandry with your crabs and I’d like to make this comment to explain some things about hermit crabs that you either hadn’t or still haven’t heard. Hermit crabs need 6-10 inches of 5:1 play sand and eco earth. They cannot burrow in JUST eco earth. They need 80% humidity or higher to thrive, which your mesh lid isn’t providing. Putting the heater under the tank is why your crabs are buried 24/7. They’re cold and it’s because you’re heating the substrate and not the air. The heater should be an inch to two inches off the substrate and right next to the fresh water dish to help add humidity. The shells. We gotta talk about your shell selection. Those shells are not appropriate for purple pinchers. They need Mexican turbos or snakeskin turbos or silver mouth turbos. They need “O” shaped openings. You need 3-5 shells PER crab. Your substrate should start at 6 inches as a minimum but the sand DOES need to be at least 3x the size of your largest crab to give them adequate molting room. You need 1 hide per crab. They need 50% protein, 20% carbs, and 30% fruits and veggies. It doesn’t look like you provide them with ANY protein besides mealworms. I recommend dried red shrimp for turtles or one ingredient cat/dog treats. The protein is to keep them from cannibalizing each other. Again, protein needs to be HALF of their diet. The turbo shells you do have are lacquered and unnatural and carved (it’s where they get the banding and why they’re so shiny.) and you should actually start boiling the water before you add the shells, because we only need to boil them for 30 seconds for every (harmful) living thing on them to die. You don’t have enough climbing stuff (remember they are tree hermit crabs. They spend most of their lives in tress or under the dirt) your tank isn’t crowded enough, you don’t leaf litter, worm castings or greensand. Again, you need to get a sealing tank or a plexiglass lid for humidity (they’re not like reptiles. They die without it). Their ideal humidity/heat is 80% humidity and 80° Fahrenheit. You need a thermometer / hygrometer. Your crabs will come out more if you follow everything set out by the people before us, like Crab Central Station or the LHCOS. Let me be clear, your new crab dying isn’t your fault, but if the others die prematurely after your having them for so long, then you know it’s a husbandry problem.
Hello! My hermit crabs lived 13 years long happy years and passed away early this spring. Im sorry to say! But they thrived and never had any issues. Id say 13 years is amazing, im proud of that. Its almost unheard of for crabs to live that long in captivity. Thank you! And thanks for watching!!!
Love when someone who's had crabs a year or two thinks they know it all lol. You should look up Jonathan Livingston Crab and how he lived, and then maybe realize there's more than one way to keep an animal. The important thing is that their physiological needs are met.
Hi Lori! I’m so sorry to hear that your new crab passed away. It can be so difficult to lose even a new hermit crab. If in the future, you do ever decide to rescue another friend, I have a tip that may help! We have found a method that helps with PPS (post purchase stress)/PPDS(post purchase death syndrome). It’s a four week quarantine period in which you help the hermit crab focus on eating healthy foods and drinking water before they go to molt for the first time with you. Like you said, you can still do everything right and your hermit crab can pass away. The same applies to this method but we have really seen good results with this method and it may be worth looking into. We do have a video on the topic if you are curious and want more information. Again, I am sorry about your little friend -CCS 🦀🐚
Thanks for the tips, I have heard of this, I gave him 4 weeks, clean food and water for the whole time but he didn’t make it. I knew this was possible but it’s just so hard. 🖤🐚
The heat pad needs to be above substrate level otherwise it'll dry the sub out over there and it can make the substrate super hot. You want to heat the air, not the sub.
@@nogoodnecktie12you shouldn’t spray as it can cause a flood. If you get an air pump and run the tubing into their water dish (assuming it’s deep. I use two critter keepers as water dishes) you can increase humidity like that without causing a flood. Or just put the water dish next to the heater for the same effect without the risk of flooding

Hi Lori it’s a new account I haven’t commented in a while but hello!
Please check out HCA hermit crab association. Please read all their guidelines and care sheets. Tons and tons of info there. Safe and non safe food list. Food/nutrition pyramid guidelines. Water guidelines. Etc.... Even info from people that get them to breed especially the amazing Mary Akers who gets babies to land.
Wow did not no you had to care for them like that
In there tank
One of my crab name is enormous aka mrkrabs
I think they will be happy with some climbing structures! Hermit crabs love to climb! That may be why yours stay buried. I made my cousin a similar setup with some suction cup hammocks and some cococoir sheets on the sides for climbing and they love it! Absolutely love to climb!
oops I just put the new one in with the other one and he is fine. My son almost killed the old one. He never gave it water. They are both fine now and I take care of them.
I got new hermit crabs! (don't worry I got them from someone who didn't want them, not a pet store)
Sorry that your hermit crab died
You have to measure it or else, no matter how deep it is, someone is going to tell you it's not deep enough
No play sand?
I love your videos !!! Can I have a shoutout!!
Don't they need room to move around
She talks too much lol😂 so sr 😢 the sad news
Sorry your pet died
Again, I am sorry about your little friend

Thanks for the tips, I have heard of this, I gave him 4 weeks, clean food and water for the whole time but he didn’t make it. I knew this was possible but it’s just so hard. 🖤🐚
@@LorisHartland yes it is really hard! It’s really sad what hermit crabs go through. I hope one day the industry will be over turned once and for all!
I like the new tank set up Gunner and Sponge Bob will have fun exploring their new home. It was nice to see you again.
I got a free hermit crab from my friend and I watch your videos and learned how to take care of them so you helped them live!!!
Check out Crab central station for additional care :)
Hi
The heat pad needs to be above substrate level otherwise it'll dry the sub out over there and it can make the substrate super hot. You want to heat the air, not the sub.
I mist spray the glass right on the pad so it evaporates and makes "steam" seems to work
@@nogoodnecktie12you shouldn’t spray as it can cause a flood. If you get an air pump and run the tubing into their water dish (assuming it’s deep. I use two critter keepers as water dishes) you can increase humidity like that without causing a flood. Or just put the water dish next to the heater for the same effect without the risk of flooding
@@nogoodnecktie12I’m only telling you as I just lost a crab to a flood and actually ended up completely switching tanks.
