honestly I thin aurian dance just took the song, sinplified it, and it just does the original artist no justice. The voicings are out of this world and he emotions from each chords are something you dont find anymore
I disagree. I strongly recommend listening to the entire Departures Album. Though of course a lot is absent on the sample, it's important to recognize that this was made as the background music for an anime, and for a cut on an immsersive lofi album that is meant to feel more like a journey as a whole than an emotional 4 minute arrangement. It's really about the context. Nujabes is a legendary producer and a lot of people recognize him as a great classical artist as well. He tried to establish hip-hop production as a recognized form of expression and art and in my opinion he achieved to reach that goal. I highly recommend listening through the modal soul album if you want to know what I'm talking about. You'll get a very different impression of the song too, if you watch Samurai Champloo and listen to it in the context that it was made for.
It might also be interesting to add that the chord progression doesn't come from this version either. It was taken from a european pop song from the 1940s, also named "the lamp is low" and this is a cover. However the 1940s version also took the chords from a different place. The Original Melody and chord progression is actually taken from the classical song "pavane pour une infante defunte" by Maurice Ravel, and was written all the way back in 1899. I highly recommend listening to it. In my opinion, it's one of the most beautiful songs ever written, which is kind of proven by the fact that the melody was covered in 4 instances through the course of an entire century.
Fantastic work! This is not an easy one. I'm not sure that the whole guitar should be tuned down a whole step. I think it's more likely that he just tuned the low E down (Drop D), as the arrangement works fine that way. The only thing that puzzles me is the second chord of the form (0:31) where the concert D and F# come on the downbeat. The low D is sustained for the whole measure by the open string but the F# is also sustained in Almeida's recording, which seems impossible unless that was an open string also. That doesn't fit your tuning model nor my drop D suggested tuning. It could be accomplished by using the Drop D and also tuning the G string to F# but that would make the other chords more cumbersome (and doesn't seem like it's worth the trouble for 1 inner voice). Maestro Kim, you've dissected this song masterfully so maybe you have some thoughts on this?
@@kittatro Yes, it doesn't make sense that Almeida would have tuned an entire classical guitar down a whole step. That generally only serves to cause havoc with keeping the guitar in tune. Although it is possible. Another remote possibility is that Almeida had a dedicated guitar set up for that tuning - but what purpose that would serve eludes me!
Laurindo Almeida very likely tuned the G to F# as he was also a lute player. For the other strings, I don't know. He either dropped the D, dropped the D and the A, tuned to Open D, or tuned to D standard but with an F# 3rd string. Which of those do you think makes the chord shapes easiest?
not to be a hater or anything, i really appreciate the time and effort you put in the tab, but there are a few mistakes in the tab, such as mistaking strings that you play with the ones that you don't, for example at 1:13 where the last "nine" is placed on the A string though it should be on the D string, which can be confusing. However I am really admirative of your work on this and it made it possible for me and other people to learn how to play this song so I thank you a lot. (Sorry if there are language errors in my comment I'm french)
i have been finding the lamp is low tutorial not arurian dance guitar tutorial, and now i found it! the thing is i tried to learn this but my pinky finger said, hell nah im out
Thank you I learned Aruarian Dance and wanted to learn the real one for a long time, but my ear's not that good Except 1:11 to 1:15 is confusing the hell out of me. It doesn't look like he's playing what's on the tab 😢
my friend i have a thing to say about the tunings you mentioned (for A and D). maybe the whole thing is 432hz? i recently changed from 440 to 432 out of curiosity and more 90's stuff (metallica, ratm and such) does feel like off putting. But i use it anyway because its better with old stuff. i will try, maybe you should also :d
I really like your....Electric Guitar. (don't get mad at if got the kind of guitar wrong I know nothing about guitars :/) What Electric Guitar do you have?
Heyyy i've tried so many time to reproduce this song but it hurts my left hand sooo much everytime do you have any tips or maybe a better way to hold the guitar ?
I've felt this and for me it was because I was pressing on the strings too hard. It takes a lot less force than you may think to get a sound from them, so try experimenting a bit to make sure you're not tiring your hand out from that
@@wire5246 I transcribed it before I saw this video, and also skipped the bridge... (the rest of my transcription is pretty much the same as this one though). My current recording of the bridge just isn't good enough to make out what's going on (esp. when I slow it down), but I'll try to look for a better one (or a way to isolate the guitar part). If I succeed in that I'll post it somewhere (prob not here though) and follow up
No (the video and the original are both recorded on an electric) but it won't sound particularly bad on one (I'm also making an arrangement for guitalele/requinto guitar which is the same as an acoustic with a capo on the 5th fret). You may have to tune it differently though (in this video he de-tunes each string by a whole step, i.e. two frets).
Finally! I found the full song tutorial, but not that stupid "aruarian dance" by "Nujabes" that literally copied the original song. And yeah "The Lamp Is Low" is based on a French song, but it's not copying, they changed absolutely everything so I call it a completely new song. Thanks for the tutorial.
Aruarian dance by Nujabes is a track that uses "The Lamp is Low" as a sample. I wouldn't call it copying. Please learn the difference between sampling and copying.
@@bigsadisuckatmobilebedwars Anyway, there's only tutorials of the "Aruarian dance", but I presonally like "The Lamp is Low" more, so I kinda hate the track by Nujabes.

@@bigsadisuckatmobilebedwars What would you consider copying? I don't think Nujabes should get no credit, but I do think samples should be credited (which Nujabes absolutely did not do, and still has not done, on a song which has now been viewed 8m times). It's not like he came up with his own voicings, or even transposed the song onto a different instrument like a requinto or something along those lines.
