  • As of this past week(or last week, I forgot), the R42 subway car fleet has been completely retired(at least, internally). These cars lasted in service for 50 years, which is astounding. Their reliability got worse and worse over time, especially this year. This caused them to slowly phase out the remainder of the R42 fleet entirely.
The R32 subway car fleet is now the oldest rail fleet currently running in the entire world, which is even more crazier!
What you'll see here are many different videos of the R42 fleet in service on the A, C, E, F, J, M, R & Z lines. This is the first of several parts to be uploaded. These videos were taken between 2008 and 2009. You'll also see some retired R40M cars in these videos as well, as they had the tendency to mix & match R40Ms with R42s to make 8 or 10-car consists.
I hope you guys enjoyed the video. Subscribe & stay tuned for more!!

I honestly wish I was as old as you being able to railfan trains back when NTT's on BMT/IND didn't exist. Great clips.

People design trains the way they want and the reflection of the lights don't make me scared and inside of the train door pockets are not construction stuff.

Great compilation, I remember the great fleet swap/replacement of 2009-2009 well, R40Ms and 42 on the 8th Avenue line was a very odd experience. I filmed these cars quite bit around 2005-2007, have a bunch of shots on the B, N and W, one day I will get them digitized.

When those trains were new we still used tokens. I miss the tokens.

I remember riding those trains on the L before the MTA replaced them with the R160’s as part of CBTC implementation.
I’m gonna miss these trains. They had been a part of my childhood and always will be. Rest In Peace, R42’s. You’ll never be forgotten.

The R42s were retired on February of 2020. They didn't come back. The R32s returned to service when it was removed a while back(before officially retiring), The r32s still ran on J and Z just it can fill in the gap. As for the A and C, some r160s from Jamaica Yard came to help.

whats the difference between R40 (straight end) and R42

The most distinguishing feature are the sides of the cars. The stripes on the R42s are wider than those of the R40Ms. They are otherwise practically the same car type, hence why they ran together.

I had read that the reason for the half-century retirement of the R42 fleet had nothing to do with a lapse of reliability - although it wouldn't surprise me a bit - and everything to do with their incompatibility with the CBTC signaling system. But perhaps you know something I don't.

CBTC has nothing to do with it, it was a mix of their reliability tanking along with East New York yard having a surplus of 8-car tech trains

@@ShaneAkACaitSith810 Okay, if that's what the reason was, then I'll accept it. Thanks.

That was 12 years ago before they warmed up to me lmao. I hated them because back then, they didn't ride that well and always had either broken ACs or heat compared to the R40s, but they had gotten better over time. I like them over the R32s.
