    I just watched an Addams Family TV rerun on RUclips, where Gomez was playing on Gottlieb's pinball machine, Dancing Dolls, I believe from 1961 with the old school wooden rails on side. Check it out, It's Addams Family Season 2 Episode 2, Morticia's Romance - Part 2. I recognized the Gottlieb logo right away. Keep up the nice work. From Indiana.

    that copper thing on the top of the relay coil is a shading ring. its purpose is to keep the magnetic field circulating through the zero crossing of the AC powering it. without it, the coil would probably pull/release each cycle, or buzz very loudly

    Back in the day...In order to "slow a machine down." Since a lot of shop keepers would jack up the rear legs to play fast (and consume balls fast...inducing more game plays/money). The fast and dirty way to circumvent this was to grab a pair of ashtrays (this was the '70s so smoking was common everywhere)...take the ashtrays and put the front feet in them. That would raise the front ¼" to ½" (depends on the glass thickness of the ashtray). Remember, one is trying to "modify" the machine fast (before the shop keeper or bowling alley would know what you were doing...you didn't need tools or anything).

    • @LyonsArcade

      I imagine the amount you could get away with was limited by the tilt bob.

    • @sguttag
      @sguttag 2 года назад

      Somewhat but that wasn't really a big deal. You had to do it before a game started because the more critical one was the ball in the track that determines if you are lifting the machine up.
      One isn't adjusting the play that much with the ashtrays...just slowing it down some...¼-½ inch is within the adjustment range of the leveling feet themselves.

    Brilliant, so simple in the end. Even i could follow the schematics. Why have a tilt switch in the back box?

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  2 года назад +1

      So you don't tilt any of it :) The operators were skittish as hell man, it's hard to understand, but they saw it as outright theft. You know how people get pissed off if they get stolen from ,well the operators saw it like that because it was their livelihood. So if somebody stole a game or cheated, they took great offense at it, they were even a little superstitious in a lot of instances.
      So they basically demanded that the manufacturers really go overboard with the tilt mechanisms, this is a hold over from WAY back, the earliest pinball machines as you can understand were much easier to cheat on, because they didn't weigh as much. So by this point, they had a couple slam switches, a couple tilt switches in every machine. It says in the manual how you can add more if you like, LOL
      there's usually one in the backbox, one on the playfield, one on the mechanism board, one on the coin door, a tilt bob and a rolling ball in case you lift the front up.

  • @waynegram8907
    @waynegram8907 2 года назад +2

    JOE CLASSIC, What does the lightbox tilt switch purpose? What would turns this on and off? I didn't know that different coils are made differently using different bobbin widths and lengths for part replacements which the gold bushings and gold washers will cause the latches to have less travel actuation range and that the gold bushings and gold washers prevent the metal to metal switch noises?

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  2 года назад +2

      That tilt switch is there so that if the backbox gets 'tilted' violently, the switch will bounce open and stop the game from working.
      Sometimes people would play the games, and shake them so that the ball would go where they wanted.... so the manufacturers designed a circuit to help deter people from doing that.... if you shook the game and it opened that switch, the game turned off so you lost your quarter! So it made it where nobody would shake the game in fear of losing their money.
      Sometimes it stopped people from doing it, sometimes it didn't but it was what they were trying to do with it... Thank you for watching Wayne like always!!!

    • @waynegram8907
      @waynegram8907 2 года назад +1

      @@LyonsArcade thanks, I never heard of the backbox ALSO having a tilted switch because I know the playfield bottom cabinet has a tilt switch but I had no idea there was another tilt switch in the backbox also. Whats confusing is they should have just called it a backbox tilt switch instead of a lightbox tilt switch because I was confused what is the lightbox connected to or referring to. I'm guessing Lightbox means also the backbox
