Deanna, I make these and sell them at my craft fairs. I make coffee sleeves with my extra fabric. I took a coffee sleeve apart and made a pattern. They can fit a water tumbler or a coffee mug.
If you use the 100% cotton batting vs the iron on, as well as cotton thread, you can use them in the microwave. Makes it easy to pull out the hot bowl!
I use 100% cotton iron on interfacing to stiffen the fabric and then I use one layer of wrap and zap between them so that it's thicker to prevent burning your hands as you pull it out of the microwave. My husband likes to use these as popcorn bowls

What a fantastic project. I would recommend that when you pin the seams to place the pins at a right angle to the sewing line, so if you sew over them by mistake you won’t break your needle

I honestly believe you could get $10 for these with no problem! I don’t sew clothes but I do sew quilts, curtains, etc. I’m dying to make these, so for me yes I can sew it. However the vast majority of the world BELIEVES that sewing anything is impossible. I wanted to sew something when I was a teenager so I sat at my Mom’s machine and did it, 3 broken needles later I had learned all about how NOT to sew blue jeans. Most people will never even attempt to make this. I don’t know how you display it but I would show it on the display table with a bowl in it, have some small placard that reads something like “microwaves are meant to warm your food not burn your hands” or “tired of burning your hands on your hot bowl?” Also be sure to mention that it is machine washable. It could probably be used to hold cold ice cream too. Make the placard big enough so the customers can read it without picking it up. Great gift idea for college kids and someone you’re caring for that may eat in bed a lot (my mom lives with me and things like this are a genuine concern). You are so talented and the things you create/produce are truly useful. Don’t underestimate their need or your talent. Not everyone can do this and not everyone is willing to take the time and effort. Remember these aren’t homemade they’re handmade with love and care.

I was told you need special batting that is 100% natural, cotton-- so it is safe in the micro. It is not safe to use just any type of batting or interfacing when using in the micro. I don't see that you used that particular kind...did I miss something? Just sayin'. Made a cute cozy though and thanks for sharing

Thompson Family she didn’t say they were microwave safe. She said she put the bowl of ramen noodles in the cozy after it had been microwaved. Personally, I don’t put any fabric in it he microwave, too many variables but these are great to protect you from a hot dish
These cozies must be made with 100% cotton batting no scrim . also 100% cotton and materials,. If using in a microwave it is not safe to use the batting with scrim , glues etc so the microwave safe batting is the only option for these if you want to use them for reheating in the microwave. l have made lots ,, sell for $15 each or $25 sets of two... They are very popular.

I cut out a bunch of these to see and sell at a craft fair and found that after seeing 2 together,that were too small to use therefore wasting a lot of fabric and batting. My advice is to cut one out sew it up and make sure they are big enough to use cutting them the dimensions you have used in the finished project
Hi Deanna....I have a question for you. Can you "sell" these with ball team prints? Like St Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs etc? I mean is it legal since it has a patent? Also, I use just one 10" x 10" piece of wrap n zap, since it is 100% cotton and it's thick enough. Then the other piece of fabric, I still sew the x but without the batting. I can get 12 koozies out of a pkg. And a few more if I piece the scraps together. Just a little tip....😊

You should be able to Google an Angel Policy for anything that has a registered trademark and find out their rules as to whether you can sell items using their fabrics, etc, with their logo or whatever they produce.... it seems it's ok with alot of companies, but there may be a limit as to how many items you can sell in a years time. And, also, some companies want you to give them credit....Like telling customers who that stamp is designed by, for instance. That's all I know....Hope this helps!

Hi Deanna. I have a question regarding the batting for the bowl cozies. Are you using "batting" or interfacing. My first set I used batting and it was too thick to sew along the outside completed edge. I am not sure to buy interfacing or batting. I can't seem to find thin batting in my area. I might be looking for the wrong thing. By the way, I have made so many cell phone stands, thanks to you. Everyone in my family seems to want one. Thanks bunches!

You should only use 100% cotton batting. Wrap N Zap is made for the microwave and should be what you are using. Fusible batting is a fire hazard. Pellon makes wrap n zap that you can buy by the bolt. I also make them by the dozens, and have gotten so proficient that I don't even need to mark them...and I can not make one in 15 minutes. Your video is 22 minutes long after editing, and you did steps off camera. You should give people a realistic estimate of time to make them...1/2 hr for some one that is very good at making these.

I have made them with a regular foot. I only had trouble when I put the right sides together and had to sew the areas where I had put the darts. I had to go over those parts very slowly because they were very bulky, but it worked!
I just made three today. I tried my walking foot, and two or three others before ending up just using my 1/4" foot (Bernina). So, I would say if you don't have a walking foot just try it with whatever foot comes with your machine. But if you use 100% cotton batting (so you can microwave them fabric, batting and thread should be 100% cotton), just know that getting over the hump of the seams will be a little tricky - but do able.

It *should be* 100% cotton - fabric, batting, and thread - if it's going to be used in the microwave. They sell packages of the batting for it, or Hobbs makes cotton quilt batting. I've seen kits for baked potato bags, etc.
ulfindout I was only asking about the interfacing. Have made 50 or so of these & I’m doing something wrong because mine are never this smooth. At seam/intersection I fight the bulk no matter what I do! Never looks as smooth as ones in tutorial! Believe me, I’ve trimmed batting, sewn seams open, nested... think I’ll look a little harder for 100% cotton interfacing. I’ve always used 2 layers of cotton batting so they can go into the microwave.

Doesn’t the padding and fabric need to be 100% cotton, so it won’t melt in the microwave? If it is fusible, it’s definitely not 100% cotton!!

Batting needs to be 100% cotton. Any poly in it will cause fire.

No one ever addresses the seam bulk, once turned & top stitching. Is the interfacing 100% cotton? I looked & found none that was
It *should be* 100% cotton - fabric, batting, and thread - if it's going to be used in the microwave. They sell packages of the batting for it, or Hobbs makes cotton quilt batting. I've seen kits for baked potato bags, etc.
ulfindout I was only asking about the interfacing. Have made 50 or so of these & I’m doing something wrong because mine are never this smooth. At seam/intersection I fight the bulk no matter what I do! Never looks as smooth as ones in tutorial! Believe me, I’ve trimmed batting, sewn seams open, nested... think I’ll look a little harder for 100% cotton interfacing. I’ve always used 2 layers of cotton batting so they can go into the microwave.

Laurie Little hi Laura! Thank you so much for watching!! I have a Singer Modern Quilter Machine! I have had it several years and the reason I purchased that one is bc it has a longer neck space. It has like 200 different stitches so that’s nice but I really only use the good old straight stitch! I will be back with more sewing ideas soon! Thank u for subscribing to my channel! I use wrap and zap as well

@@CraftyCraftsByDeanna I do but I've never used it. However, the seams also seem really hard and I don't think I can get a needle to go over them, even with a walking foot.

I wash on cold and the smooth it out with a bowl in it and let it air dry
