Had to comment, this is one of the most straightforward helpful tutorials I’ve ever seen. I installed windows for making music, and I wasn’t sure if it would even work so I didn’t give it much space. This has helped immensely, thanks!
I feel like people are doing this for like really good reasons. For work and for other applications they need in their studies. Then there’s me, I needed to free up space to play Team Fortress 2. Is it worth it? Yes. Yes it was.
I was dreading the fact that I only gave windows 50gig. I thought I’d have to backup, reinstall, passwords, serial numbers and all that. Found you video and was able to double the windows partition 100gig. Loved your video but had to rewatch several times as you got a little fast with the mouse clicks. Thank you so much!
And remember, if Disk Utility is not letting you resize or add a partition, go to Time Machine preferences and turn off "Back up Automatically". Wait a little while for these to be deleted, then make your partition. After finishing the expansion process on the Windows side, go back to the Mac side and turn Time Machine backups back on. Thanks for the video!
I hit this hurdle too. Wish I had seen your post first but a quick Google search also uncovered what I needed to do. :) This was my story : Because I had used Time Machine to backup my Mac partition to an external hard drive before commencing this procedure, I must have clicked on the Back Up Automatically option without realising. Time Machine started creating "snapshots" on the Mac drive itself which appears to have reserved the entire drive space. The resolution is to firstly untick 'Back Up Automatically' so that Time Machine no longer creates any local snapshots and then list and delete the snapshots that have been created. Do this as follows : - Launch Terminal - Type: tmutil listlocalsnapshots / You will see the snapshots taken with date and time stamps. I had three. - Type: tmutil deletelocalsnapshots 20xx-xx-xx-xxxxxx
This worked (thank you, John), but there were some things that came up along the way. In case this happens to someone else: 1) At 1:25, where he asks you to click on the '+' button to create a new partition in Disk Utility, the '+' button might be disabled. In order to enable this, you'll have to delete your local TimeMachine (backup) snapshots. It's a weird workaround, but it's the only way to enable that '+' button. If you don't know how to delete those local snapshots, Google it, or comment here and I'll help you out. 2) At 3:13, where the Mac restarts to apply the changes after you expand your BOOTCAMP partition to take up the unallocated space, the operation might fail. Mine certainly did. The screen asked me to hit any key to restart when it failed, but that didn't work. I had to manually reboot using the Power button. It restarted into Windows and I simply tried the operation in MiniTool Partition Wizard, again. This time, it restarted and successfully completed the operation. So, don't be afraid if this happens to you. Hope that helps.
Just used successfully in 2022. So quick and easy. Thank you!! I spent forever installing windows in boot camp, only to realize I gave it wayyy too little space and couldn’t download even 1 game lol. I was so relieved this worked!
I had a scare because on my Mac, it said that the operation failed when partitioning my new space. I ran first aid on all the partitions (besides the boot camp one that I was trying to increase the size on), and everything seemed fine. Used the wizard and followed everything as you said, and it’s fine for now. Will update if anything changes, but thanks for your quick and easy tutorial!!
DIVYESH SAHOO I can try my best! But followed the guide completely. Make sure to back everything up! My issue was that the error said it failed, but it ended up working. Worst case scenario, you can delete everything and start again. Maybe someone else who’s better at this than me could help too! You need the mini partition tool that the video mentions for it to work! Basically, on your Mac, create a new partition for the extra size you want for windows. Then, reboot into windows. Run the partition tool, and delete this new partition size (it should show up as “other” in the partition tool. Then, resize your current boot camp/windows to completely take over the new partition (now called “unallocated space). You should end up: original bootcamp size + new partition = total new size
Thanks so much for this video! Your steps worked perfectly. I was THIS close to deleting bootcamp and reinstalling because I thought that was the only thing I could do. Just so you know, I'm still running Mojave on my iMac, and it worked fine. Also, those of you who try this, be aware that some steps simply take a long time to complete. You might think your computer froze, but it's actually working on it. Just wait.
thank you so much for this guide. it’s two years old now and still works just as well. very straightforward video and explained incredibly well. thank you!!
I want to hug you right now. I am pretty tech savvy but couldn’t figure this out for the life of me. I just wanted to play a 10gb game and my bootcamp had no space to start with. Tried every tutorial I could find to get more space. You made my day my man!
For this of you at the end. Where you have to get unalloyed space. And you it won’t let you resize. If there is MB inbewtween the boot camp and your unallocated space. Delete the MB. Then resize your bootcamp.
Great video. I mistakenly sized by BootCamp partition to 90GBs, thinking that was more than enough? After the install of Windows 10, the game I was trying to installed required 55GBs of free space, and I was 10GB's short. This helped immensely. Time saver. Thank you!
Thank you for this, John! You helped me expand my partition so I could continue playing my beloved Baldur’s Gate 3 on Mac! Your instructions are cheerful, clear and easy to follow!

Just did this on a MacOS 12 Monterey machine, with one small change: I had to boot into recovery mode before creating the new partition. Tried using a normal MacOS, and it warned me that it might be better to do this from the recovery partition. And, indeed, the operation failed under a normal running MacOS. But it worked just fine when booted from the recovery partition. Thanks!

@Hannpai IF ANYONE WIPED THEIR MAC OS USING THE VIDEO ABOVE: First things first, DO NOT download or install anything to Windows after MacOS was wiped. There's a possibility of recovering your files and creating new files could possibly overwrite what's salvageable. And do not use any third-party software to reinstall MacOS as all of this can be done using Apple and Windows licensed/built-in functions. Use the Windows Partition Wizard to attempt to restore and recover anything lost. If you can't save anything, you need to start from scratch and wipe your HDD or SSD by reinstalling MacOS. Use the tools' website for any tutorials on recovering your data using their software. To reinstall MacOS, follow this tutorial: support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/reinstall-macos-mchlp1599/mac In the process of reinstalling/re-setting up MacOS, make sure to wipe any leftover or random partitions and Bootcamp files so that all you see is your SSD/HDD with MacOS installed and then whatever extra storage you may have plugged in to your system. If you accidentally wipe MacOS again by doing this...shame on you lol (but follow the instructions above to get back to this point.) Once that's done, make sure to completely set up your Mac with all your applications and anything you will use your Mac for (for the time being.) This is so you can see how much space you can afford to give a Bootcamp partition once it is ready to be installed again. After this, download the Windows ISO file from: www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Once this is done, make sure the ISO is located in your "Downloads" folder and begin the reinstallation of Bootcamp by using the Bootcamp Assistant. Once it gets to the screen asking about how much space to be partitioned, make sure to use the movable slider between the two drives to ensure Windows is getting a decent amount of space to run (I have a 500GB Mac I gave Bootcamp 135GB, and it runs perfect.) This is where knowing how much space your Mac will need, is very important beforehand. Choose the Windows ISO from your downloads folder and continue with your new, and more space manageable installation of Windows. If it installs correctly and everything works as planned, congratulations! You should be good to go. This next part is completely optional, but I'm going to put it here so if anyone has the same problem as me, this might be able to help as I fixed my issue and am now no longer having issues. If you go to install Windows, and it gives you a "0xc000225" error and a blue screen, reboot back in MacOS by holding the option-key while restarting. Go through disk utilities and see if a Bootcamp partition is installed (Make sure that your MacOS isn't renamed as my MacOS SSD was renamed "BOOTCAMP" while doing all of this for some reason). If there is a partition for Windows installed, then try and wipe just that so that you can start over. You may also be able to automatically remove Bootcamp by reusing the Bootcamp assistant, but look up a tutorial just to be safe. After you're back to just a MacOS again, get a reasonably sized flash drive (I used a 256GB Flash Stick formatted to exFAT) and put a fresh copy of the Windows 10 ISO on it (NOT THE COPY OF THE ISO YOU HAVE IN YOUR DOWNLOADS FOLDER). Once that's done, remove your flash drive from your system and boot up Bootcamp assistant. For some reason, Bootcamp assistant won't initially run with your flash drive plugged in, but can be reinserted once it asks for the ISO location to install. Plug your USB back in once you get to this, chose the ISO from your flash drive, and attempt to reinstall Windows once again. Keep in mind, my system had a different blue screen after getting fairly deep into the Windows installation again, but it restarted itself and there wasn't a problem for me after that, and I'm hoping the same will apply to you. If this happens, reboot your Mac again while holding option and select Windows to boot up and it should fix itself. If any other problems occur, I recommend calling Apple Support for help with this issue as they helped me through reinstalling my MacOS.

Christopher Dillman GTA itself is around 72gb. When I tried to do this i put in 101gb but when I actually opened it said I had around 70gb free out of 94gb, so if you’re doing this I recommend around 150-200 gb maybe? It’s completely up to you.
Thadd III For me when I run it it depends what I’m playing. When I play singleplayer it runs fine, as if im on a console. When I use GTA Online it runs a bit slower and there are a few fps drops but not too many. When I play using FiveM it depends on the server, if the server has a bunch of mods and addons then it will lag a lot but if the server does not have that many then you should be fine. By the way this is using my MacBook which is a 13 inch 2017 MacBook Pro with an i5 Dual Core 3.1GHz Processor and 8GB of ram. For the graphics card its the standard Intel Iris Plus Graphics 650. Of course this all depends on your MacBook because you might have a slower MacBook that maybe can’t run GTA.
Thadd III I would say you would run it pretty fine but you might have some issues here and there, by the way if you do play FiveM if anytime you have issues rendering or can’t see people and stuff, don’t worry thats usually because of your Wi-Fi not your computer. Also just to make sure you can run GTA there is a website named pcgamebenchmark which lets you check if your computer can run certain games. Here is the link for running GTA V www.pcgamebenchmark.com/grand-theft-auto-v-system-requirements Hope you have a good time playing GTA!

If your Windows blue screens after partitioning in MacOS, and you get a "ACPI-BIOS-ERROR", do this: 1. Restart, boot back up into MacOS by holding option. 2. Set Windows 10 as the default boot drive (System Preferences > Startup Disk) 3. Restart 4. When you see the ACPI_BIOS_ERROR screen, hold the power button for 10ish seconds 5. Wait a few seconds then power the computer back on. Found this solution on reddit and it worked great for me.

Under settings for Display when you select the option to detect displays can it see your display? Are you running Windows 10? As it should detect most displays and docking stations. You might need to visit the external display's manufacturers site for specific drivers.
Hey John, great simplified way of showing how its done. I suppose this also works in reverse, where the windows partition is made smaller and then in MacOS you allocate the unused space to the Mac partition?
I’ve tired doing this twice now, I get up to the apply changed for reallocating the space and my pc restarts and comes up with the black screen with text, but it keep on saying “Error failed” “not enough space” and cancels itself
Adam Edits well what I did because I’m usually always having to find my own fixes. Go back into windows and open back up the partion wizard and click the thing with the most gb should be in allocated. Then you can restore.
Although this should work MOST of the time, you are making fundamental changes to the disk, using an unsupported utility, and that entails major risk. Assume the worst case scenario, that you may corrupt your volume by doing this, and make a FULL BACKUP before attempting anything. Otherwise, you might be back in here crying for help and there's not much anyone can do.

I only created the new partition and this messed my bootcamp partition, it doesnt appear when holding alt now and if i try to start it using the startup option it gives me a no bootable device error.
I’m having the same problem. It seems when I added another partition, it didn’t number it after bootcamp. The computer numbered it before bootcamp and took its place so now when you try to run windows it is reading the empty partition and why you’re getting the error. To get windows running normally again you have to delete the new partition but then you can’t add more space. I haven’t found a solution to fixing this yet... hopefully someone can help us.

You might think your computer froze, but it's actually working on it. Just wait.
Hi, Glad it worked for you :) also thank you for taking the time to comment on the video.

thank you so much for this guide. it’s two years old now and still works just as well. very straightforward video and explained incredibly well.
Abel Rodriguez lifesaver. thanks!

This is genuinely one of the all time best videos I have ever watched. So perfectly done, no wasting time. 10/10
Great video. I mistakenly sized by BootCamp partition to 90GBs, thinking that was more than enough? After the install of Windows 10, the game I was trying to installed required 55GBs of free space, and I was 10GB's short. This helped immensely. Time saver. Thank you!

I was able to follow this tutorial successfully with High Sierra v. 10.13.6. There were a couple of hurdles but it was much faster then the alternative, thank you!
Thanks!
I STRONGLY recommend changing partition fields with apple themselves before using this third part software. I just completely wiped my MacOS with this software, while following the directions and now I'm fighting to get a years worth of projects back.
Were you able to figure anything out? Same thing happened to me
@@jsgilmore94 Tried literally everything, and it looks like it deleted everything without a way to get it back. Tried getting ahold of Windows Partition Wizard but they aren't responding so idk.
@Hannpai IF ANYONE WIPED THEIR MAC OS USING THE VIDEO ABOVE:
First things first, DO NOT download or install anything to Windows after MacOS was wiped.
To reinstall MacOS, follow this tutorial: support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/reinstall-macos-mchlp1599/mac
In the process of reinstalling/re-setting up MacOS, make sure to wipe any leftover or random partitions and Bootcamp files so that all you see is your SSD/HDD with MacOS installed and then whatever extra storage you may have plugged in to your system. If you accidentally wipe MacOS again by doing this...shame on you lol (but follow the instructions above to get back to this point.)
Once that's done, make sure to completely set up your Mac with all your applications and anything you will use your Mac for (for the time being.) This is so you can see how much space you can afford to give a Bootcamp partition once it is ready to be installed again.
After this, download the Windows ISO file from: www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
Once this is done, make sure the ISO is located in your "Downloads" folder and begin the reinstallation of Bootcamp by using the Bootcamp Assistant.

Anyone know of a good partition size for windows 10 in order to play smooth-running GTA on 2019 iMac? 100, 200, 300GB?
Christopher Dillman GTA itself is around 72gb. When I tried to do this i put in 101gb but when I actually opened it said I had around 70gb free out of 94gb, so if you’re doing this I recommend around 150-200 gb maybe? It’s completely up to you.
For It to run Smoothly 256GB would be the best of all
Thadd III For me when I run it it depends what I’m playing.

If your Windows blue screens after partitioning in MacOS, and you get a "ACPI-BIOS-ERROR", do this:
1. Restart, boot back up into MacOS by holding option.
2. Set Windows 10 as the default boot drive (System Preferences > Startup Disk)
3. Restart
4. When you see the ACPI_BIOS_ERROR screen, hold the power button for 10ish seconds
5. Wait a few seconds then power the computer back on.

@@gnarcoflacko3703 I just settled for the windows but there is way go to Reddit and look up the problem. There’s a thread where ppl had the same problem. Then msg the guy that fixed it. Sadly his msg deleted from my Reddit messages.
I was able to replicate the process in under 10 minutes and it worked very well! Highly recommend this solution for increasing your bootcamp partition!
