This was about 6 years before he would achieve fame in "A Fistful Of Dollars" (1964). Clint had just started working on the "Rawhide" tv series. They brawled again in "Space Cowboys" nearly 40 years later!
Also in Rawhide, in S1E4, "Incident of the Widowed Dove". There he loses against Eric Fleming. But also that one, I'll see at once off, cause it's Eric Fleming!

Clint's hair style is definitely not from the 1870's. You wouldn't see hair like that for almost 80 years after when this scene was set. They were really bad about that back in the fifties, sixties, and seventies.

In the end Clint Eastwood become not only a bigger star than James Garner but a top director and producer in Hollywood. Although younger than Garner by two years in terms of longevity he has certainly lasted much longer than Garner. Clint is indeed an Icon in America. I am not sure the same can be said about Garner.
Garner would always stand up to Executives at the Studios and not take any abuse, he'd quit his contract and even suing Universal (Which was surely a Career Death Sentence Back then) Yet won settling out of court. And in between creating a Racing Team, Choosing to Race Cars for fun, choosing to do Rockford Tv Series for practically the decade of the 1970s and doing his own Stunts put him on the shit list for many movies or he was unavailable or not interested. He might not have the Name Recognition Worldwide as Clint does because All Clint did after Rawhide was Movies. After Maverick, Garner did Movies, then back to Tv Series and a couple more movies. But Garner Became a Bigger Star before Clint and from then had the liberty to choose his roles. He probably wasn't interested in producing or directing full time. Though he did coach many struggling Actors, including James Woods. I think the best compliment and seal of approval an actor (Of That Era) could hope to get, came from John Wayne 'The Duke' Himself, he called Garner the best Actor in America. They never did a film together, but on Wayne's Boat, there is a picture of them huddled together playing cards or something on the boat from that time period.

Very unusual for Clint to lose a fist fight, indeed. He must have had it written into his contract, not to lose another fist fight, lol! Having said that, Garner being the star of this show, had to win, against the slightly evil Clint character I suppose. Good v Evil and all that.
James Garner By far . Loved Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry Movies but He ran down John Wayne & his movies .The Duke was by far the better actor & his westerns were more realistic
I never thought I see the day that clint eastwood would get wasted in a fist fight, but this was James Garner, so I will see this as a exception
