I'm not that old, but I can't imagine wearing the tiny pieces of matwrial thwy call a swimsuit now. It's basically a g-string and a bra 2 sizes too small. I think people will be swimming nude if things keep up, and why not? There's nothing left to the imagination now anyway. The pendulum has swung in 2 directions at once.
There is a saying: "You've come a long way, baby..!! " I couldn't imagine having to be almost fully dressed to go play in the ocean or a lake or pond...uugghh..!! And I understand why the women didn't venture much past wading depth; the weight of the wet clothes would be too heavy to manage. It appears, then, that the only time the Amish get to fully immerse in water is in the bathtub or in the shower, or when getting baptized ? The fashion and modesty pendulum sure has swung to the opposite extreme, hasn't it..!!
Yes and it hasn't stopped yet. While I wouldn't want to have to swim heavily clothed..I do agree with the need for modesty. Things like this change one person at a time! We all have choices!

my grandmother would talk about her mother making swimming 'costumes' out of silk tafetta so the skirts wouldn't cling. around late 1800s.
