Superb as ever Derch. Amazingly, the only slight disagreement I had was the good and bad touch should be 4s when you consider the healing AND the +70% crit bonus. If the florentine is a 4, they are for me.
Here is a link to the sheet I used to rank everything www.dropbox.com/s/jx6gt61tzr5l9k2/Gun%20Company%20Rankings.xlsx?dl=0 Also corrections - 12 Pounder is a drop from big sheep, not a quest reward. Thanks Faily Failracer
Great video Derch, great scoring. I love using 3's because a lot of them are just fun to use like the Tinderbox w/double prefix. But just because they're fun and I like them doesn't mean they have to be a 5.
My 2 cents: First of all, even before watching this, If your list didn't have Vladof as #1 (or at worst 2), I would have been shocked. Without any methodology, just based on my personal impression, I would have rated them like this: Vladof (everything they make is good.... everything, even their Etech snipers and ARs) Hyperion (Great gimmick, great red texts, solid everything except snipers) Maliwan (Solid across the board, with a few superstars) Jakobs (Harry Potter jelly beans mix of awesome and terrible. nothing in between) Dahl (middle of the pack, burst mechanics is a matter of taste. some great red texts, snipers are very underrated) Torgue (Shotguns, Harold, Nukem, Ogre, and Kerblaster...that's it...everything else is bad) Bandit (So close to being good, very few truly good red texts. awesome SMGs and launchers save them from being last) Tediore (Cornucopia of "meh", very few red texts to begin with, fewer still that are good ) I was surprised at Torgue's placement on the list, but it makes sense when you break it down. I was also surprised by Dahl's placement, but I guess I simply forgot about some of their guns. I found myself agreeing with you to within 1 point on pretty much everything (some of your 3s I would have put at 2 or 4 etc...) Except the following 2 things: To me, Bandit SMGs are a 5. I would understand the argument to have Hyperion as the best, but not much lower than that. They have high damage, high fire rate, high mag size, work with any grip or accessory. I think in this case, being a very methodical Maya player is affecting your perception of what SMGs can do. The Logan's gun isn't a 3 to me. So many guns can do the sham trick (darts, ARs with the torgue barrel...etc), the Logan's gun is just the fastest. To me it's hovering between a 1 and a 2. --- And as for the methodology, I could not disagree with you: it would be too much of a chore to try and balance the relative weight in value of each sort of guns and how having bad offerings might not be as important as how many good things are offered... I can't think of a way to make a list like this that would be satisfactory either, so I think overall you did a good job of assessment. The one thing I would have changed is ranking the non-red text guns like you did the red-text ones: individually on their merit instead of from best to worst. As in: If the worst brand for a weapon type is still very good, it doesn't deserve a rating of 1. This is particularly true for SMGs for example: they are all good and the difference between them is marginal at best. Same with shotguns: the 3rd best brand is still worth almost a 5. Also, things like ... is having a bunch of crap red text in your lineup makes you less good overall ? Should we instead judge a manufacturer by how many GOOD offerings they have instead of looking at them all ? That could be another video :) Some of the brands in there might have gotten a slightly different score, but I don't think it would have changed the ranking by much. Overall, I agree with your conclusions, and your choice of methodology.
Here's a completely different methodology that I think would also yield interesting results: - For each guns (red text or no) that would earn a ranking of 5 in your previous methodology, give the manufacturer 2 points. - Then do the same thing for the guns that get rank 4 (or solid 3s), and give the manufacturer 1 point for those - Everything that gets a (weak) 3 or a 2 is worth 0... they are the pack, what other guns are judged by, they are there so that the game has guns for us to play with. Everyone makes guns, so we shouldn't be bothering with them. The difference between a Bandit pistol and a Tediore one is not worth mentionning, only what stands out does. - Everything NON-red text that gets a 1 substracts 1 point from the score (Non-red text only: you can always ignore a specific red text gun as being a goof (Torgue isn't worse overall because the boom puppy exists), But if ALL pistols from manufacturer X are bad, that just reduces the loot pool of usable things in the game. - And finally, grant each manufacturer a discretionary amount of points from, say, 1 to 5 to account for their gimmicks and particularities (Burst, slow bullets, splash, never being elemental, always being elemental, increased DoT, chucking, reverse recoil, inherent crit bonus, etc... ) I would like to see that list :)
Great points on the Logan's gun. I tried to not penalize a brand for a gimmick unless it held them back, like not being able to match elements, slow bullet speed. Some don't like burst fire or reverse recoil but they don't really harm the brands.
The Sloth is amazing. I never even knew it existed until I saw your video on it, and after that I just started using it on my Sniper Zer0 and generally on Sirens. It's frankly an all-purpose weapon that hits like a train, and because it fires slowly, you can easily un-scope to stop the burst, making ammo conservation very easy and intuitive. Definitely an underrated weapon.
Just making a more detailed note for my own easier reference (I know 'stamps are in the description): #8 Red Text = 4:48 #8 Non-Red Text = 11:22 #7 Red Text = 17:14 #7 Non-Red Text = 22:22 #6 Red Text = 25:09 #6 Non-Red Text = 35:07 #5 Red Text = 39:19 #5 Non-Red Text = 42:18 #4 Red Text = 44:16 #4 Non-Red Text = 52:51 #3 Red Text = 56:25 #3 Non-Red Text = 1:01:37 #2 Red Text = 1:04:18 #2 Non-Red Text = 1:10:58 #1 Red Text = 1:13:50 #1 Non-Red Text = 1:19:17
Glad to see you still exist. As a jakobs fan, I must say that it's also nice not having to swap a lot. No elemental bonus, but on characters with little to no swap speed like Maya, it's less of a hassle at times.
Derch, in the time it took between this video and your last one, I graduated high school, did an internship at Mahle Pistons, enlisted in the Army, went through hell at Infantry OSUT in Ft Benning, GA, went to Airborne School, now I'm at Ft. Bragg in the 82nd Airborne Div. I decided to get back into borderlands and wanted to see what you were up to in recent videos and it turns out I haven't missed much haha. Welcome back man

Going through these vids for nostalgia sake. Might even max out a character or two. Edit: nevermind they locked me out of my favorite area unless i pay more money. Screw borderlands.
While I'm glad you're back, I personally would put Jacobs higher. Not a ton obviously, (a lot of the uniques are pretty bad) but at least above tediore because their weapons are effective and can excel on all characters. The elephant gun as you said is useful when used right and I think should at least be a 3. And Jacobs is one of the few manufacturers with op viable non-uniques, and the semi auto fire rate is actually a plus to many people, not to forget the high bullet speed.
Jakobs is better than Tediore, most of the tediore weapons are decent, but they don´t have too much unique weapons compared to Jakobs, and all of the unique Jakobs weapons can be really good, ALL of them.
Though I have not had the chance to try them all, I pretty much agree. I think the only thing holding them back is a lack of non-elemental damage boosting, or a least lack of specific gun damage boosts not being multiplicative, as opposed to the elemental boosts.
Glad your back. Another great video. Small disagreement here and there but won’t change much in general. See where your coming from with almost all rankings. Great job as usual
1,000 thousand subscriber challenge with no videos best for the utility purposes like swap healing or getting a second wind. The firerate and the ammo consumption are horrendous on it. The explicit prefix, for example, fixes the problem of low bullet speed, the Intense one makes your firerate great.
good to see you again and about video: carnage is pretty good for Axton or Krieg, it can proc blood bath pretty easily, drunken hive can melt bosses with Gaige or krieg and infinity is cool on almost every character and sal can infinite shot with it
I'm here long enough for the Bearcat shoutout. So far, you're pretty much dead on, I think. I have some guns I like a little more, a little less or am utterly indifferent about. My preference aside, however, the ratings make sense.
Of note on the Florentine, it does indeed have a shock pellet and slag splash. Dumped the code to check, and yes, it uses the same bullet behavior definitions as the Chulainn. Also confirmed on the test dummy because I still sometimes suck at reading the code. I don't think that'd change its score, but yeah. Shock pellet, slag splash, same as Chulainn (which would be good if not for the self-slag). Also, funny anecdote on Hyperion, I used to hate Hyperion snipers, because I was an idiot and thought the initial sway on snipers was just so stupid and I just refused to use them. But then I realized you also get the increased accuracy just for staying ADS, so there's no need to waste ammo to zero them in. Just wait a second.
I remember reading somewhere, just a couple days ago without having the chance to test it yet, that the Chulainn has a "party effect", simmilar to the sheriffs/deputies batch etc, where the self-slag doesent apply if the guns wielded by more than one party member at a time. If thats actually true, and not a pile of bogus, this would easily put the gun at a solid 4, maybe even a 5. The damage it dishes out IS really, really high, and if you can circumvent the indeed detremental negative effect...
The Lyuta is such a good gun. I got it on my first play through. I think it was in a shock element, and I used it for 7 or 8 levels past it's LR. This was before I was really into the game, and even then I knew that it was OP.
Haven't watched the entire video yet, so I might make another comment, but by going with the system you used to rank each manufacturer based on averages my opinion would probably be pretty similar. However I think because some manufacturers simply have more weapons the results overall might be less about how a manufacturer felt during a playthrough of the game (including endgame build making, like we do) and more about statistics. But at the same time that's probably the most objective way to approach it. Though personally I would've probably made a list for every character since different chars mean drastic changes to the effectiveness of certain guns. But that would've probably resulted in 6 massive videos. ^^ Also if I had to judge the manufacturers purely based on their trademark gimmicks I'd probably say Bandit and Vladof are the worst because they just go for an increasement in a stat, then Dahl and Maliwan since burst-fire and elemental-only isn't all that special (but still more interesting than more mag size/fire rate imo), then Jakobs and Torgue since they kinda go for multiple things at once (Jakobs is non-elemental and has increased crit, while Torgue is explosive-only and has a lot of splash damage) and finally Tediore and Hyperion at the top spot, because their mechanics are truely unique.

The explicit prefix, for example, fixes the problem of low bullet speed, the Intense one makes your firerate great.
Are you using an RTX gpu with nvidia broadcast? probably why we can't hear any of the background noise you mention
Mah boi, good to see you back
brother
is that u
Yeah I'm back
Nevermind I see what you did there
good to see you again and about video: carnage is pretty good for Axton or Krieg, it can proc blood bath pretty easily, drunken hive can melt bosses with Gaige or krieg and infinity is cool on almost every character and sal can infinite shot with it
oh its good to see you in my youtube feed again
*"The legend lives."*
Am I Kung Foo?
Oh you're much more than that buddy
"Guess who's back, back again*
Welcome back man, it's been too long. Nearly 90 minutes to make up for it though, I'll take that ;)
only 11 months of wait but hell it was worth it. Welcome back Derch
Thanks, now 11 months to the next one lol
Nice to see you back Mr Derch
All these comments about you coming back, but we know you never left. :)
Not everyone knows my secret identity, it's hard to recognize me with pants on
Derchlands thanks much for a great laugh!
I'm here long enough for the Bearcat shoutout. So far, you're pretty much dead on, I think. I have some guns I like a little more, a little less or am utterly indifferent about. My preference aside, however, the ratings make sense.
Derch, you forgot the Orc SMG at 17:04
Gladly clicked on the notification bell icon. Love you Derch :)
He’s back. Derch is back.
I think you forgot the ogre
I had it in the list of guns, it was a 4
Derchlands would like to see the list for reference. Can you post it in the forums?
It's a Google doc so yeah, I'll get to it later, one my way to work now
I posted a dropbox link the excel sheet in a pinned comment
Awesome content as always dude. You're the reason I started playing Maya lol she's pretty badass
I remember reading somewhere, just a couple days ago without having the chance to test it yet, that the Chulainn has a "party effect",
simmilar to the sheriffs/deputies batch etc, where the self-slag doesent apply if the guns wielded by more than one party member at a time.
If thats actually true, and not a pile of bogus, this would easily put the gun at a solid 4, maybe even a 5.
The damage it dishes out IS really, really high, and if you can circumvent the indeed detremental negative effect...
Yay! We’ve missed you!!!
Dude, Mister Torgue is gonna come for you. Oh, wait... did he?
Derch
The Lyuta is such a good gun. I got it on my first play through. I think it was in a shock element, and I used it for 7 or 8 levels past it's LR. This was before I was really into the game, and even then I knew that it was OP.
Thankfully it and the Bekah are still god tier in bl3.
Hyperion, depending on your preferences, should be first or last because they make Claptraps.
Welcome back!
Thanks man, I think I mentioned you at one part during this.
I think it was tediore, anyways what's your take in where I put things?
Haven't watched the entire video yet, so I might make another comment, but by going with the system you used to rank each manufacturer based on averages my opinion would probably be pretty similar. However I think because some manufacturers simply have more weapons the results overall might be less about how a manufacturer felt during a playthrough of the game (including endgame build making, like we do) and more about statistics. But at the same time that's probably the most objective way to approach it. Though personally I would've probably made a list for every character since different chars mean drastic changes to the effectiveness of certain guns. But that would've probably resulted in 6 massive videos. ^^
Also if I had to judge the manufacturers purely based on their trademark gimmicks I'd probably say Bandit and Vladof are the worst because they just go for an increasement in a stat, then Dahl and Maliwan since burst-fire and elemental-only isn't all that special (but still more interesting than more mag size/fire rate imo), then Jakobs and Torgue since they kinda go for multiple things at once (Jakobs is non-elemental and has increased crit, while Torgue is explosive-only and has a lot of splash damage) and finally Tediore and Hyperion at the top spot, because their mechanics are truely unique.
Derch: explains what the video is roughly about. Mr Torgue: “That sentence had too many syllables! Apologize!” (Barely in the video and enjoying it)
