  • The Honda CRF300L is a good dual sport for the money, but it's not perfect. There are some shortcomings, some have to do mods, and some issues that need to be addressed. And the most annoying thing about a lot of the problems is they could be fixed by Honda for almost no real cost. Silly little things that really hurt the bike and take so little effort to fix. So here's my list of 5 changes Honda could make to the CRF300L to make it go from good to GREAT.

Agreed man. They need a "Western" Model that has stiffer springs and dampening for the average weight of Americans. Its dangerous when you take turns at speed with the wallowing. After the Rally Raid Level II suspension and kickstand its a perfect small bore dual sport. The Rally Model does have an LED headlight and its plenty bright. Such a stupid cost cutting move for the 300L since its also safer to be more visible to other riders and see better as the rider. The paper filter isnt too bad but wish they had a tool-less door as you mentioned. Defintely adding the CBR300 cams and 550 Performance tune witht eh intake tube. Its unjustifiable to make it so gutless on the highway for the American market where 80mph keeps you from getting run over.

The rear shock is downright dangerous, not just just soft! The bike wallows from corner to corner on a twisting road at some speed, never settling properly before entering the next bend. I put over 60,000 km on a crf250l and the shock on that was markedly better than the 300L. It's insane that they didn't install a better shock. As it is, all the other improvements to handling they incorporated were made pointless by the poor action of the rear suspension. I didn't upgrade the suspension on the 250L, but I sure as hell upgraded the 300L with a K-Teck Shock and RaceTech fork Spring kit. Now it handles safely. Love the bike, but man the suspension is a joke!

You are spot on about the bike being mainly targeted at the Thai/SE asia market. Easily the most popular over 200cc bike period, nevermind just the dualsport/sumo segment. The KLX140/150 is super popular but the KLX250 is a distant 2nd, you can't get a WR or DRZ.......easily. Point being Honda doesn't really care what the rest of the world thinks. After SE Asia the rest of the worlds sales are a drop in the bucket, we get it in N/A and Europe as a slot filler in the lineup.

I’m with you Jake, in Aus we are normal sized folk and suspension is a must No1. Ktech front and rear. No2 Side stand - free - use an old handlebar set, cut off 20mm and weld this to the existing stand No 3 550 Performance ECU and side air box mod. No 4 Exhaust upgrade plenty to choose from, I used MotoX on price alone. No 5 Unifilter high flow serviceable air filter and modify air intake tube. This bike is now awesome, more power, sounds like a thumper, handles brilliantly and loooooongggg service intervals.

Suspension is the #1 thing which would make me recommend a Yamaha WR or Kawa KLR over this. Even putting on the Ohlins kits the CRF suspension leaves more to be desired. #2 is I wish it had just a little bit more highway power. I have a 250L so maybe it’s better on the 300L, but just being able to get to 90 instead of topping out at 80 would be great. Not that you need to go faster, but if the bike is not topping out at 80, that means it can get to 70-75 faster and have more pulling power at that speed. Aside from that the fuel gauge, maintenance intervals, and gear indicator on the 300L are all awesome and very user friendly

    • @TheGardenSnake

The ohlins kit is not enough? The race tech kit is great. Is the ohlins one an off the shelf item? The race tech one is set to the rider. Maybe that’s it. I’ve always been under the impression that ohlins was top notch.

Re the kickstand: with the stock 'saggy' shock, if you get on the bike with the kickstand down and swing your leg over, a taller kickstand would cause most people to go over on the right hand side because the kickstand would hit and throw their balance off. They're marketing to a world market with this bike, so some things, I think, are done to appeal to the largest audience. Oddly, when I replaced my shock with an aftermarket (not lowered), I don't find any issues with the kickstand. That whole unstable 'ness' putting it on the kickstand to me was really just the lack of rebound control on the shock. An aftermarket shock doesn't 'pogo' like the stock one, and doesn't seem to be an issue. When I first got my (Rally), I put a kickstand extender/pad on the bottom (about 5/8" taller) and found it unstable when parked on anything but flat ground (off-road), and promptly took the extender/pad off.
Re the headlight - just buy the Rally and you get a nice LED headlight... I agree that an LED headlight couldn't add that much cost to the bike.
Re HP, it's not all about the peak, for a bike like the CRF300L, to me, usable power is better than peak power. The power on the 300L is pretty usable. Again, targeted at a global market. Would I like more power, for sure, but how far do you go? I really liked the 390 Duke I had, but the 40ish HP from a 373cc engine, but I feel there was a tradeoff in reliability.
Re suspension - again, a global market and newer rider. The KLX300 gets better suspension from the factory, so you'd think Honda could have at least matched Kawasaki, but to me, there's a bunch of better things on the Honda than the Kawasaki, which would have bumped up the price. It would have been nice to have 2 options with a bump in price between - standard and 'enhanced' with better suspension costing a bit more money. Give people a choice. The reality is that for me, no matter what bike I'd have to upgrade the springs, so I'd be into any bike for some extra $. It was cheap to upgrade the shock to a YSS (around $320USD + shipping) (which included the correct rate spring).

Changing the cams and intake may result in a slight power gain but also shift the peak power by 1000 rpm, along with alternating the torque curve, the CRF has a broad flat torque curve, this is more useful at lower speeds encountered off road.
The CRF is priced according to the equipment installed, $ 4000 all taxes and comprehensive insurance for a year included, here in Thailand. By no means is it a motocross bike with lights, it's an adequate all round dual purpose tailored to riders in the 175 pound or less range. The under stressed engine makes it reliable with long service intervals,
All the "mods" commonly discussed won’t alter the fact that it's heavy, the cheapest way to increase performance is to lower weight, this includes the rider, personally I lost 44 pounds after leaving North America, very noticeable performance upgrade at no cost.
Honda does make CRF 250 R which is lighter, significantly more powerful with good suspension etcetera, but also all the downsides of a highly stressed engine and retail price.

0:50 I have Hotwired gear too... but I have a love/hate relationship at times. Usually what I run into is that you get a touch chilly on one setting, and too hot on the next setting up, so you have to keep cycling it up and down non stop. EDIT: And before anyone asks, I live near Buffalo and ride all year long. As long as there's no snow on the ground. The other day it was 20° F, and I had to keep cycling between low and medium on the pants/boots, and off/low on the jacket.

Oh yeah yeah I have the same thing. It's crazy how warm this stuff is. I never use high. The worst I rode in was just below freezing doing 70+mph for about 30 mins on the highway at night. I had the it in medium at most haha. But one thing I have done is to crack the jacket open a bit to balance it out. Now this is not the safest thing to do to be fair. And you kinda end up like something cooked in the microwave. Burning up and frozen at the same time. What would really be good is an auto temp sensor. Some of the high end gear has that.

    • @Blitz6804

It's essentially a unicycle with a training wheel out front.
Welp, I've never owned a supermoto, but I've owned a handful of Jap road bikes in late models. Japan has a problem under-springing and under-damping most suspensions that end up in the USA market. I've had the opportunity to ride a Ducati and BMW and one or two other brands and suspensions were night and day more supple and controlled than the stuff from Japan. Exception would be the supersports and superbikes, which are a lot different than everything else they sell here. Yet even those aren't set up optimally in a lot of cases. But of course, Americans vary a lot in weight and height and one suspension configuration isn't going to cut it for everyone. None of this stuff matters buying a car or truck or SUV, but a rider's weight is a significant portion of a motorcycle and small changes with suspension make big differences.

The 300 platform was marketed well and the masses had high hopes. A large percentage were met with disappointment. A small bump in power compared to a 250L and a suspension that was no better. After you get the bike out the door of the dealer selling at almost full MSRP, dealer fees, taxes and supporting mods to make this bike ready for true dual sporting, you are once again in that $9-$10k price range. The Facebook marketplace confirms the disappointment and also shows what kind of loss people are taking moving these on down the road.

Rode the CRF300L not long ago offroad and it's crap. Way too soft suspension for someone over 90kg and it's non adjustable at all, nowhere near enough damping either. I have a 5'6, 70kg mate that also rode it and said even for his weight thing is too soft, suspension on this thing is horrid stock to the point where it's not usable on serious off road. HOWEVER that soft suspension makes it excellent for dealing with urban crap like potholes and kerbs etc, it cannot be ridden hard at all tho as it is stock. The CRF300L Rally on the other hand has beefed up and much stiffer suspension, and with the addition of some quality of life features and a windscreen + bigger fuel tank, it's a much much better adventure/offroad platform. I understand that your use case is for supermoto but i feel like the CRF's stock suspension is way too soft even for that, cannot be pushed hard at all especially under braking (which the stock brakes are ridiculously inadequate for too)

they could've used tapered roller bearings in the steering stem instead of ball bearings like a bicycle. honestly i'd never buy one everything on it is built as cheap as possible which is acceptable for a learner commuter bike but not for a dual sport especially not when it's trying to fill the shoes of bikes like the xr250, drz250, ttr250 and wr250 all of which had better quality components and lighter weight.

yes its basically a motocross bike with lights, but, if honda sells the crf L for 5250$ and the crf RX for 9000$ you can see why they dont norrow the gap, it would be bad business

After all your mods, all you can get is a power wheelie? Not even balance point? I'm sure it can, it's just I think an under powered supermoto is more dangerous in difficult riding situations. for me, i know it doesn't make any sense, but i just don't like honda, in general. i look at all their bikes, i watch all the reviews i can find, i look at the specs and the prices and whatnot, and i'm just completely turned off by them. they seem overpriced for what they are, and it seems like they survive on their reputation for reliability. but in reality the other big brands are every bit as reliable. i've never heard anything that would make me want to spend money on a honda. well, the one exception would be for the rebel 1100 because there's really nothing similar in that price range, particularly because of the DCT. don't get me wrong, i love shifting. i had a quick shifter on my tuono 660 and kind of hated it. i really love manual shifting. but the prospect of a cruiser with an automatic tranny just seems cool to me. i have no plans of ever owning a cruiser, but if i did, that's the one i would want. it's the one honda that actually seems like a great value.
and you have to know that they use the parts they use because they already have them. any time you see a situation where they could easily have used something else, it's because they already have that worse part in quantity, or they have a contract with a manufacturer to keep using it.
