Thanks Ollie. From a production point of view this might be your best video so far. And for me at least, the subtle shift of emphasis away from big fish and sharks to uncovering the best eating fish contrary to the conventional wisdom, is welcome. Just received my Primal drink bottle all the way over here in the south west of Western Australia. Neat! Watching you hold the fish on the bait board with your left hand as you draw the knife towards yourself with your right hand.... eeek! Get yourself a filleting glove man and save all those anxious moments. Love your work. It seems to be helping Senator boats. I saw one of their boats in our local boat dealer’s yard recently.
A little over a year ago I had a pretty bad mental break and one thing that sort of helped calm anxieties down was finding the videos on your channel. Been avidly watching ever since and now my 5 year old gets excited when you have a new one up and asks to see Mr Ollie and all the pretty fish.
Mate slimies as they’re called for bait or blue mackerel as they’re called in restaurants are unreal! Like you say an oily fish that needs to be treated carefully they deteriorate quickly so icing is crucial. I believe there’s some science to the idea that the oil can go rancid when cooking also that is why smoking at lower temps work better and frying in a pan can result in some powerful flavours some people don’t like. I’ve also found cooking these guys over charcoal can have some awesome results. By far though my favourite is to smoke them and have them with some whipped ricotta and honey on toast for brekkie. Have got a video smoking these guys if you want some inspo 🤙🏼 yeww
Cold wet suit solution. Night before you go to bed just heat up a bunch of water and put it in a cooler/wet bag with your wet suit. Nice warm suit to put on to start a cold dive. It is life changing.
Man I love his content. Such a refreshing break from people who shriek and make everything so click bait. Ollie your channel is all substance ... me and my family love the water, go to beach every weekend and we love your channel and your adventures. Best channel
Hey mate in Australia we cut the jackets from behind the spike down then when u take the head off the guts come with it, then skin it and if cooking whole we use the skin to remove any guts that are left in the fish.
I love your statement, landing a big fish doesnt necessarily means you have made a successful catch. Instead we should appreciate every experience nature have to offer.
Glad you're going to try that slimey. Caught one with my brother in a kahawai boilup and man, i really loved it. Would totally eat them over kahawai. And i like kahawai.
Well done Ollie! we eat mackerel in Spain when they come by in the months of March-April. We call them verdel or caballa. They are very nice smoked or even baked in the oven. slightly marinated with lemon for 10 mins before cooking it at 180 Cº for 15 mins, with onions and garlick and there you have it!
Nice video Ollie. Great comments and advice about smaller fish species. Leather jacket (cream fish) is a great eating fish. 19 deg water - that’s peak S.I summer water temp 😊
Another quick escape to NZ … such an incredible place above & below- camping insanity complete w feast - dream for most of us - thx so much for sharing - nice work w the new trident - very neptunian 🤣🤙🏼
An excellent quality video Ollie. Those English Blue Mackerel (NZ quota species EMA - Scomber australasicus) are perfectly fine to eat: not as tasty as their prolific North Atlantic equivalent (Scomber scombrus). Have caught them off Gannet Rock (Akl). The livers and hearts and roe are also choice bits of any fish. Solo at sea - and especially diving - can be wonderful and hassle-free, but if anything goes wrong - like the Skydivers motto " If at first you don't succeed....". Tight Cray-cracks; big Stingrays; grumpy Seals and Sharks; s/w blackout; gear failure; injury/cramp; weather change...it's a high-risk choice. On the culinary front I'd have skipped all the supermarket gunk and just wrapped the fish in nutritious kelp (like sushi without the rice). Mind how you go out there and happy hunting.
Kia ora e hoa another meke video brother. I just happen to come across your videos when i started getting into diving and you’ve definitely inspired me to continue on my diving journey. Like you say its amazing for the body, mental and just overall wellness. Keep up the good mahi 🤙🏽 Be nice to see you back down the east coast
I lived in Sydney at Bondi Beach and as it was real expensive even back in the 80s, there was a fish shop that sold all sorts of fish. They had leather jackets and they'd fry them up and they were real cheap, I swear I lived on leather jackets for 6 months there, they're delicious
I keep getting unsubscribed from Primal Pursuit for some reason, but I never unsubscribed, not sure what that’s all about, this is one of the best spearfishing channels, should have more subs, hopefully this isn’t happening to others. Anyway great content Ollie 👍🏻.
Another awesome video, that's some accuracy given it was your first time on the pole spear too! Would be real interested in some videos of raw, uncut dives to show us a bit more of your technique and how you approach different dives - would be particularly educational for beginner spearos like myself. Cheers for all your videos!
Nice Video Ollie, always knew pole spears as "Hawaiian slings". The Fiji version in the 1970's was a length of 3/8th steel rod inside a short length of copper tube and powered by car inner tube and not connected to the diver, no flippers, the local guys from the outer Islands used the small 2 lens swimming goggles and relied on a kill shot. As head Chef on Castaway Island local Dads, Mums and the kids in their powered dugout canoes with outriggers would land their catch and bring the fish to the Restaurant, the fish going rate was 10 cents per pound and painted Lobster 35 cents a pound. Penni was the Island Storeman who wrote down the weights and then would give a chit to the fishermen who received cash from the office., I controlled the scales and a 10 lb coral trout would somehow gain extra weight, Penni never knew and the fishermen knew their numbers and with great delight, I'd watch them trying to keep a straight face. Great place to spearfish and once landed a Spanish Mackerel by luck, the all Indian kitchen staff {$10 weekly wage}didn't believe me and searched the mouth for a hook hole hehehe.
A very good New Zealand spear fishing video - awesome images. #spearfishNewZealand , #underwaterNewZealand , #polespearNewZealandunderwater . Yeah man mackerel are great fish as long as you bleed and chill them - oily flesh great for smoking plus good for a fish stew also! Bouillabaisse
Yeah, that was really interesting. I live on the northern California coast. I go down with a short pole spear to get into the Rocky cracks. Then I grab my long gun from my float on the surface… I also keep a medium gun on the float . Three weapons of choice. I jump in off the beach or off the rocks and make an incredible day of it . It’s always a better dive if you prepare some of the catch while you’re at the spot . Again, great job on the video in all aspects . From Sea Ranch, Bodega, California…👍🍀👍
We love slimy mackerel in our house, although Pacific or blue mackerel are more appealing names! Agree with your comments about underrated fish. There's more out there than snapper, kingfish and the other usual suspects.
Hey Mate, if you like sesame prawn toast then the leather jacket is a good substitute for prawn. Mince the leather jacket fillets with some ginger and spring onion, egg white, salt & pepper, spread the mix on fresh white bread, sprinkle with sesame seeds then fry in oil, not too hot. serve on its own or with your favorite dipping sauce. Enjoy :)
Hey Ollie, I have found the same thing with several of our freshwater “trash fish”. The best example being the freshwater drum. It is the only freshwater species from the Sciaenidae family. They are a freswayer version of the mulloway or Jew fish your area. They are cussed and thrown back by 99% of rod and reel fishermen here. They say the are super bones like a carp(also delicious) or that they taste terrible. They are fantastic! I’m glad they get thrown back. More for me to spear 😁 Great episode by the way! 🐟🐠🤿🔥🔥🔥
Been watching you for awhile now and I really enjoy every single video you put out. I recently started diving in Hawaii and it has been a challenge. Starting with a spear pole then transitioning to gun. Been learning a lot from watching your videos. Keep pushing brotha 🤙🏻
Totally agree withe the so-called underrated species...having grown up in Cape Town, my favourite is Barracouda, or snoek as we used to call them - my favourite...and I'm still alive, at 72. Ive shot quite a few here in Otago, where I now live. GreT VIDEO, AS ALWAYS! Ka pai!
Another epic one mate, love to see your trying out pole spear, tried my self its not easy. Need to continue training my freediving skills, have a trip soon this July back home in the tropics. Hope to do some spearfishing too.
Hey Brutha,im a newbie subi, for over a few months an I thoroughly find your content an info massively appreciated an mostly enjoyable to watch. Stay safe,be solid! Thankyou
Blue Mackerel or otherwise known in Japan as a "Saba" . One of best eating and truly delicious oily fish fish and #1or#2 in Japan for charcoal grilled at breakfast or dinner !
I was told my whole life mackeral were no good. I finally ate one and loved it. I think this information is infused into the population by big food. In California mackeral are one of the most common fish. If everyone were eating mackeral that would mean a lot of people would need to go to the grocery store less. You see it with California mussels too. Very plentiful and I believe big food has infused false information about their toxicity and people just simply don’t eat them.
Been living in Europe the last 20+ years so the fish species is varied, but absolutely nothing wrong with mackerel. Lovely smoked then turned into paté. Definitely need to bleed them though, too fishy otherwise. Great vids though champ!
The Black Baitboard is made by Railblaza. The spinning system on top of the live bait tank is custom made in house at @senatorboatsnz Factory in Napier, NZ
unrelated to the video but are Maori Chiefs any good eating? I've just got a little 3 prong at the moment and dont have much experience so am thinking they might be a species i can target
1. That is a sick pole bro. 2. The burgers looked insane. 3. What an insightful thought: that naysaying the edibility of fish has likely stemmed from oldschool practices. A lesson I learned after hitting a kangaroo with the car and taking it home and eating it after literally 30 people told me not to do it: if someone has never done it themselves, don't take that advice from them. They're just spewing speculative hearsay. There is a way to make almost anything taste good.
Call me soft but I like to put hot water in my thermos overnight. Makes for toasty wetsuit on the dawnies when camping on the beach. Just make sure you add a good dash of cold in the bucket before you chuck the wettie in otherwise hot potatoes…🙂
A long one! Got my beer and ready to enjoy
I got 6 pack
Ollie this is my favorite video you posted so far ! Leave a like for the guy the production is insane !
Thanks mate!

We used to grill them. They are great tasting.
Thanks for the tip
@@timothytroy5485 they’re unreal hey I’ll get distracted chasing them sometimes and miss out on the big doggs chasing them 😂
This is they guy who convinced me they were great!! Cheers Josh!
@@olliecraig-primalpursuit yeww glad you enjoyed it mate, good to see more species becoming better understood and utilised!
Cold wet suit solution. Night before you go to bed just heat up a bunch of water and put it in a cooler/wet bag with your wet suit. Nice warm suit to put on to start a cold dive. It is life changing.
Epic episode! 'Civil War' was a nice treat in the beginning
That shot to the head with a pole spear made me subscribe, ollie. Well done, braddah.
Man I love his content. Such a refreshing break from people who shriek and make everything so click bait.
Ollie your channel is all substance ... me and my family love the water, go to beach every weekend and we love your channel and your adventures. Best channel

Hat a magnificent river and the landscape is just amazing.
Looks like the Aldies. Such a cool country we live in! Another epic video. Thank you. 🙏

I love your statement, landing a big fish doesnt necessarily means you have made a successful catch. Instead we should appreciate every experience nature have to offer.
Butterfish and leatherjackets are both lovely eating fish. 👍
Another top vid. You're getting pretty good with your editing. Cheers, Ollie.
Living the life bro...how blessed are we to have that in our backyard, awesome vid
Glad you're going to try that slimey. Caught one with my brother in a kahawai boilup and man, i really loved it. Would totally eat them over kahawai. And i like kahawai.
One of my absolute favourite places out there! Loved it!

Yeah boy!!! Love me some old skool Guns n Roses!!! 🎸
Great vid mate. Enjoy the longer ones 👍
Awesome video, beautiful scenery, above and below the water. Love the message about eating different species!!

Nice video as always ollie, very enjoyable watch👍👍👍
Awesome adventure! I like the introduction of the pole spear, I started with a basic one way back in the day.
I’m impressed with your great work respect and stay safe out there 🎉
Love your videos man, I would love one day to travel across the world and doing spearfishing in NZ! Cheers from Portugal

Amazing Ollie, great to see you challenging youself with the traditional pole spear amazing scenes, we call them slimy mackeral or slimies here in Aus
Yip . Good ole smoked mackerel we loved in SA. Good one Ollie.
Nice new pole spear and fins! Still providing and getting a feed on the pole spear/ 3 prong 💪. Epic video as always!
We love slimy mackerel in our house, although Pacific or blue mackerel are more appealing names! Agree with your comments about underrated fish. There's more out there than snapper, kingfish and the other usual suspects.
Great adventures Ollie, love ur videos. U can use the inflator to deflate ur matres, just use the other port with attachment 🤙🤙
Great video . Great challenge, fair Play !! Thanks Ollie 👍

The dive master here in NW Florida recommends using a steel 3 prong . Adding a crimp to each prong
Let it rust.
Holds fish on the prongs much better
Awesome episode bro, keep up the good work 👍
Way to nail your first snapper on the pole!
now i enjoy the spearfishing dont get me wrong, but I thoroughly enjoy the boat cooking mate lol living the life man
Hey Brutha,im a newbie subi, for over a few months an I thoroughly find your content an info massively appreciated an mostly enjoyable to watch. Stay safe,be solid! Thankyou
I like your boat, Ollie
Blue Mackerel or otherwise known in Japan as a "Saba" . One of best eating and truly delicious oily fish fish and #1or#2 in Japan for charcoal grilled at breakfast or dinner !
Pro tip. Heat some water up in your jet boil and put that in your wetsuit before you put it on. Hat tip to Josh James
Yep, done a few times! but really it's only a split second of chill then once in suits super warm and toasty
15minutes damn that’s early
Yuussss more content and its a long one yeehaa think I was starting to have withdraws not seeing new content haha
Neat video thankyou
Makeral is good sushimi. I have also tried blue maomao sushimi it's as good as kawai. I would actually rate blue maomao better than pink.

Hey ollie, do you have any tips that I could use to increase my breath hold in the water? Any advice would be appreciated
