Thank you for this great video. I'd watched 3 others before finding this one, by far the most informative about how the seal is fitted and were able to do the job by ourselves.
After watching this video several times, and with no prior experience, my brother and I replaced the seal on my Defender 90. From start to finish the job took us less than two hours and it went in with no drama. Thanks for your videos, very informative and very helpful.
Sadly, I have to do these a lot as we work on Defenders etc etc. It's a 15/20 minute job at this stage, one I still don't enjoy. Nobody much will care/read, but I'll share my "Tips". 1. Use a Britpart seal. Reasons. They're 5mm too long out of the box - but that's close compared to most of the rubbish out there. Shorten yer seals, Britpart... 2. Use loads of glass cleaner to lube everything. Then spray on some more. Nope - even more. 3. Before you start & your head melts, orient the seal. The skinny slot that looks like nothing would fit in there is where the glass goes. Orient that so you're fitting the seal to the screen with you on the "Inside". The roundy edged "ope" is the one that goes over the screen surround. It's easy to look at the seal & go "WTF way does this go??" Despair might set in. That's normal. Ignore that & re-read what I said. It makes no sense until it starts making sense. Even then, it might not make sense. 4. Use a plastic trim tool to fit the seal to the screen - have the screen sitting up on wooden blocks at a comfortable height. This job will require exertion, arm fatigue, cursing & patience. Plus cursing. Go slow fitting the seal - slow is fast. 5. Getting the 4 corners on stops everything popping back off. Do those first. Otherwise you will curse more as the bits you did pop off. Use more glass cleaner. Spray some on your forehead at this stage too. . 6. Spray the vehicle with loads of glass cleaner. Try get some onto the windscreen flange. At this stage, you may not care where it goes - but try. Your arms will be aching from fitting the seal to the windscreen - if they are entirely wrecked, get a Pal to spray the flange. Go for a coffee now/cigarette/examine how you came to be here in Life. 7. Use a silicon nozzle to fit the cord into the seal - regarding "cord" - forget using 1 piece to go all around. Use 2 pieces & overlap them on the sides. Thank me later. It's about 700% easier & better. You now have 1 cord that does the top & the 2 top sides, another that does the bottom & the 2 bottom sides. If that doesn't make sense, ask. I'll explain better. 8. Don't press, pull, shove, bang or kick the screen when fitting - it'll break. Be gentle. You will want to press, pull, shove bang & kick - resist the urge. Trust the cord. The cord is your friend. Do both sides first - ickle by ickle or the screen will snap. Treat it like it was made out of glass... no, wait.. You don't need any suckers, pullers, fancy-dancy yokes or anything. Just cord. 9. Once it "pops" in - it won't pop in on your first few goes... go around the outside with the trim tool & sort the bits that are not popped in properly. 10 If none of that helps, we fit them for €120 including screen & fitting. A bit more if we have to supply the new seal as well. By step 4, you may just regard that as being a bargain.. I do too tbh. I hate doing these & we do clutches - I'd rather do the clutch.
Good job there - you make it look easy, when I know it isn't. Lube-wise, is there a reason why the professionals don't use silicon-oil spray on the lip to the windscreen frame? I have watched a few of these, professionals and amateurs, and nobody uses silicon. Must be a reason!
Personally I just use a bit glass cleaner to make it a little easier to lip the rubber in, these are a really tight fit and I need the glass to be centred until it is fully lipped in, using silicone spray would in my opinion cause the glass to possible move and making it harder to lip in, if it moves even a couple of mm to one side it makes it really difficult to fully lip the rubber in. Hope that makes sense.
@@AUTOGLAZ1ER Yes, I think I understand the problem here - that could be the reason why nobody mentions silicon at-all, as they all find that the glass is murder if it doesn't stay-put right in the middle. Thanks for your advice, much appreciated - I've got a loose windscreen frame (off the vehicle) to try and exchange the seal on, which ought to be easier, but from what you just mention here, could have gone badly with an old glass if it had been stressed by slipping sideways in the aperture, then having to be lipped-over more aggressively. All the best to you.
great job as usual,i used to hate doing these and for for some reason i always seemed to be asked to do them in the middle of winter when the rubber was rock hard.but i used to cheat and use WD40 as a lube.,good to see someone over this side of the pond doing videos,keep up rhe good work
