The big PROBLEM with MULTIVERSE stories

  • In recent years, many superhero stories have explored the concept of the multiverse: we've seen it throughout the new MCU saga, in The Flash, and even in Invincible, but none of these projects managed to take full advantage of the multiverse. The concept caused more problems than anything else, and we explain why in this video.

0:35, it’s the idea from Dr. Hugh Everett about Quantum Theory that for every event with more than one possible outcome, each outcome is realized as its own distinct universe existing in parallel to all the other resulting in an infinite number of parallel versions of the universe which cannot interact with or affect one another. So when Hugh Jackman said Logan was set in its own universe distinct from that of the X-Men movies, it made sense in terms of Multiverse theory. The movies where characters can interact with people from other universes don’t make sense vis-à-vis Multiverse theory. Which is fine, movies don’t have to be scientifically accurate, but the problem arises when they can’t be consistent with the rules that they made up.

The worst thing is that the movies require me as a casual viewer to watch the series on disney+. This would be fine IF these series were good but the writing in both Marvel & Star Wars has taken a nosedive. Now the reason for this decline in quality are vividly discussed but for me it is because the „characters“ are one dimensional, existing characters are being made awful and the stories have huge plotholes. And now you make these stories the backbone of your upcoming movies… that is just dumb.

Maybe by some cosmic quirk all Marvel multiverses imagine themselves to be Earth 616, but nope, we don't see that in Multiverse of Madness. It's a designation and a decision that can ONLY piss off the fans and has no meaning whatsoever to anyone else.

No, the REAL lazy writing is when they use the reboot to just retell variations on the previous stories because they are just flat out out of new ideas to fit into the canon. What? Green-K has been overused? Well, we changed it!! Now it doesn't work the same!! Now we can tell you that "First encounter with green-K" story all over again...!! Lex Luthor? He's not just a super-genius mad scientist, he's a brilliant businessman AS WELL (Because THAT happens all the time...) What, there was never a Supergirl from Argo City on Krypton? Hey, now there's another Supergirl, but ...
And so on and so on. The only ones that have done this at all well is the Legion of Super Heroes, and even there, it's far from perfect -- they've just had many of DC's best writers over time.

4:50 I would disagree with the point that filmmakers should not touch the concept of the multiverse just because they aren't able to fulfill the hype of expected cameos from the audience.
Just like you mentioned Reed Richard's appearance in Doctor Strange Madness of Multiverse, the problem was that he was not given better screenplay: the smartest man alive and he -
    1. Told Wanda about his plan to use Black Bolt to disintegrate Wanda
    2. Tried to directly attack Wanda resulting in stretching and spaghetti-like dismemberment of the Fantastic Four's genius leader 😅
But during the rewatch of that film I understood that Reed actually recognizes that by killing the Scarlet Witch, they would be killing the innocent Wanda Maximoff whose body was being used to dreamwalk. Reed wanted her to surrender so they could avoid that. So he was smart after all 😂😂😂
So multiverse's rules are complicated but poor writing superseded that.

You miss the BIGGEST flaw of the multiverse... it removes STAKES. D&W highlights this and, ultimately, does homage to the Logan Wolverine but Reynolds and the writers are fully cognizant of how terrible an idea the multiverse is to storytelling. The anchor should be someone who in a timeline is suppose to go on to save that timeline. Like they are destined to do great things and cause a chainreaction
Logan was that anchor but he died when he wasnt suppose to. Thus he isnt around to do what hes suppose to do so the timeland begins to break apart and spiral it has the potental of crashing into other branches causing more problems.
Deadpool is arrested for messing with time causing the timeline to get more out of control so he is captured n he breaks out seeks out wolverine to fix the timeline n be the new anchor.

4:56 This isnt true for me, and I bet a lot of other people too. I didnt believe any of the speculations. I learned to never believe stuff like that, until I see it. What I was hyped about was the Mr. Fantastic and Prof. X cameos, which were already confirmed. And they introduction was gold, I was very happy when I saw them.
The problem was Marvel throwing them away 5 minutes later, in SUCH a STUPID way, which made me feel betrayed and disgusted. (also the handeling of Wanda suddenly beeing full evil, but no need to have that discussion again) I mean honestly, the "smartest man in the universe" is acting plain out dumb, even for an average human, and since fking when can you just brake Prof. X neck in your own mind and kill him?! That makes his powers not just fking useless, but also dangerous for him to ever use. Hes supposed to be one of the strongest beeings in Marvel history and you kill him off like that? Nah I will never accept this decision.
THIS is what STILL makes this movie feel like one of the worst MCU projects ever to me. I bet objectively its not a bad movie, but they shouldnt have played with my feelings like that. If they never included these characters, it would have been an okay movie to me, and I wouldnt have left the cinema extremely mad and disapointed.

Honestly, I think the biggest problem with this is that the multiverse saga should have been the third saga story. Everyone after the infinity saga immediately wanted to go into mutes because mutants are literally half of the Marvel Universe. Is is that they couldn't use mutants until 2025. Back now the smart thing that they should have did was release some small TV projects and a couple of films tying up the loose ends to the multiverse saga and paving the way for the mutants so that by 2025 they could go full in on a mutant saga. At the end of the mutant saga with every single Marvel character established from The avengers to Spider-Man's to now the mutants. Now you can do multiverse variant stories about them since now the audience is super comfortable with them. Could have waiting Disney and Marvel got greedy and they were like well. If we can't use mutants, we'll do the multiverse instead and then try to do every character and rushed everything and every year had to have three films and they just buckled under their own weight. The key to this which I think the new DC Universe is going to show off that Marvel forgot and DC didn't originally get is patience. Need to spread this out and be patient. Need to sit back, evaluate and go things step by step in a logical manner. Otherwise you will lose your entire audience. And they're kind of trying to do that now, but it's a little too late. Honestly, the multiverse saga is so big that I'm afraid of what the mutant song is going to be. Cuz mutants sound like a lesser Universal threat than the idea of threatening both the universe inside of a multiverse. Diverse should be like the last big Grand thing you do, not the stepping stone to something else.
