    The 'tenner in pocket' video was great, glad to hear there's more coming. You could introduce challenges into it such as 'Hitchhike with a stranger' or 'Complete a river crossing' and achieving those would let give you an extra quid or something along those lines; maybe that's straying too for from the original idea of having a set amount though.

      I think the charm of the tenner in pocket video was that it was so free and simple, I do think that adding (his own) extra money would go in the face of that. Busking for money would feel more in line with the challenge, for example.
      I think the best way to vary these would be different locations and the different people who live there. It would be so interesting to see how willing people are to help him out!
      I fear that adding challenges would make it too much like Jetlag the game. Not that there's anything wrong with that but gamifying it too much would take away from the adventure in my opinion.

      I enjoyed the Tenner in my pocket video a lot, because Tom was free to improvise at any moment.
      For more than 10 years now on french TV there's been a show called "Nus et culottés" which more or less translates to Naked and cheeky (but culotte also means pants...)
      Two guys start from a random place completely naked and try to accomplish a mission with the help from the people they meet on their way.
      It always starts with trying to get clothes but also food/water but then it's also hitchhiking and getting help to build things or gather presents for other people.
      I don't know if you'll read this Tom and if this show exists with subtitles in english, but i think it's a similar vibe and just like they did their thing in other countries and with variuous goals (that sometimes fail but most of the time work out because people just help), you could go to different countries and set some challenge so the videos are not always the same.

    I just wanted to add to the ''Why so scared of farmers?'' Question, of course the mission ending is a big reason to want to avoid farmers, but I think its pretty clear, to me at least, that Tom isnt trying to bother anyone. I think its clearly part of the goal to reduce the needless bothering of regular nice people to a minimum, and its pretty fair to understand why a farmer would be unhappy to see someone trespassing on their fields. Obviously Tom knows he's very cautious to not damage anything and get out of their land as swiftly as possible but the farmers dont know that and its obviously best to avoid stressing them over nothing.

    • @chikinautas
      @chikinautas 22 дня назад +3

      I actually can't understand why a farmer would be bothered that much, how often is it that they get livestock stolen or plants damaged by people? Seeing someone soundly walk through your land should be enough for you to know they're not trying to damage it, because poachers wouldn't just do that, they would try to be sneaky or come at times where you're not working/available.
      It would just make me thing that they're somehow lost.

    • @MemeticsX
      @MemeticsX 22 дня назад +3

      @@chikinautas Probably it depends a lot on the personality of the person involved and their history. Do they presume an intrusion onto private property is probably accidental, so the person is likely lost, or do they presume that any intrusion would be purposeful, so the person is likely up to no good? Either way, the presence of the trespasser is a violation of the normal social agreement (and legal agreement) to respect private property, so I can understand the default reaction to that violation as defensiveness and even anger: entering property-protection and rights-protection mode.
      That said, I think if the trespasser's response to that aggression is contrition, patience, etc., one can defuse the situation in most cases. (For example [spoiler ahead], the home owner who chased Tom down in the video where he's racing against Archie & Adam... Tom's calm and contrite reaction and his willingness to explain - that helped calm down the homeowner too. But when the guy saw Archie and Adam race through beforehand and avoid him, that reinforced his initial assumption that they were doing something bad.)

    • @Brax1982
      @Brax1982 17 дней назад +1

      @@chikinautas It does not matter how well-meaning and careful he is. He does not know what he might be damaging, directly or indirectly. There are other factors besides just the property. Disturbed livestock can get sick. They might even panic and injure themselves or get trapped in some place. This DID happen at some point, I forget where. We don't know what became of that. Possibly it was unrelated to his and I mix it up in my head. Also, he DID kick a football into a herd of cows, disturbing them for the laughs (it was pretty funny, though).

    Got a video idea for you Tom: set off at sunrise, facing east, and just follow the Sun for a day.
    (Or start at sunrise facing West and walk into your own shadow, possibly much easier).
    Like a straight line mission except instead of the GPS to guide you, you're walking directly towards the Sun (or directly away).
    You'll start facing east/west and gradually turn south/north before coming back on yourself in a big C shape ending at Sunset. But depending on your progress and speed at different points, you'll have no idea exactly where you'll end up.
    Pick a nice clear day and it will be easy to stay "on line". And the beauty is you can decide how long your mission is. Fancy a quick one? Do it in December (better for hedgerows) and you'll finish in about 8 hours.
    Or do it in midsummer and have a real 3:30am to 10:30pm adventure.
    You could do it somewhere close to home and familiar, or up on some open moorland to cover more ground and get the biggest loop on the GPS afterwards.
    If you imagine tracing it on a map, you'll soon realise that unlike a straight liner where you know your route (it's just a matter of when you'll hit various points) your speed at one point can dramatically change your final location (within a few miles anyway).
    Let me know what you think!

    As someone who grew up with parents very strict on screen time, I’m gonna be honest, it mostly just reframed my parents as enemies to what I wanted to do and made me learn ways to work around the restrictions. I would really recommend being less focused on eliminating as much screen time as possible and more on trying to connect with your children and understand what they want and make sure they understand what’s healthy. Helping children find all manner of activities that they can enjoy is good, as it’ll reduce their “screen time” by consequence. Restrictions, on the other hand, made based solely on specifically limits in time that make sense to you? That’s just setting a challenge for them to overcome

      Children do need some restrictions, but the restrictions should be discussed, agreed upon, and reviewed. Not to negate what you say; alternatives are always the best ways to change behaviours.
      I also experienced that idea of being against my parents because of the restrictions they held, but being much older now, I’ve realised that those restrictions did affect me positively, and I wouldn’t have had it otherwise. But my parents weren’t authoritarian about it. We would have discussions, and arguments, and agree on compromised restrictions.

    • @kaelananderson9237
      @kaelananderson9237 25 дней назад +10

      Hard agree. I'm obviously not going to advocate letting your kids run rampant in anarchy, but it's been proven time and time again - both in a parenting context and a broader legislative context - that strict limitations and prohibitions (connotation intentional) only create a "forbidden fruit" mentality where the thing restricted only appears all the more desirable, breeds resentment, and results in binge consumption when the restrictions are lifted or worked around. Much better outcomes tend to result from letting people pursue the things they want to pursue, and I would venture healthy consumption levels tend to establish themselves naturally, in the absence of perverse incentives. And if not, you're in a much better position to successfully intervene in a potential problem if you've not established a relationship of distrust and resentment from your draconian approach.

    • @simonchasnovsky1835
      @simonchasnovsky1835 25 дней назад +8

      In my opinion, you can't escape the screens, it's just anything else, sex, drugs, alcohol, sugar. You don't teach the kids to STAY AWAAAAY because they'll end up trying it out with their friends, find out it's awesome, and then they lose control. Instead, you introduce the child to the concepts yourself, and teach them to use them in moderation.
      Alcohol? Probably bad for you until you're 25, also it's awesome, but also if you black out it's a bad time, and also don't do stupid things like trying to drive.
      Screens? The internet is awesome, but it's not a replacement for real life, and videogames are awesome, but not a replacement for playing outside. You get 90 minutes of screens per day. Want more? Go do some chores, and you can choose to cash out in money or screen time!
      Obviously you adjust things appropriately with age and circumstances. Probably no personal screens (phones, tablets, laptops) at all until they're like 10. Then a phone with a 30-minute per day limit on social media and content consumption apps might be fine. At 13 a laptop would be cool, since at that age they might start getting into hardcore multiplayer games, or stuff like programming, and they're very useful for notekeeping and research for school. And you go from there.

    Your best bet for a straight line USA mission would be going in a straight line across a national park or across bureau of land management or forest service land. This would actually be pretty doable if you got in touch with the right ranger station at the right park. It would have to be open access areas of which I'm not 100% sure where the best place would be but I do know they exist. A lot of parks like Yosemite are actually tons of back country with only a little area that people usually go to. Yosemite is a bad example because it's so mountainous and would be very hard terrain for a straight line mission. But for instance, Mojave national preserve- You could do a straight line probably coming from the direction of Moore and towards Flynn (just guessing based off the map). Approach the park rangers/whatever local authority stating you are a filmmaker, you want a permit to film, and you always use a leave no trace code of ethics.

    Hi Tom,
    My wife and I love your straight line challenges. We've watched them all cheering you on. On your last line recap of your "England Straight Line Mission Analysis - Was it actually Silver??" you mentioned some challenges around the Burdell Score for yourself and the pair doing the longest Scotland line possible between roads. Having many zero Burdell scores doesn't give much comparable data.
    My suggestion is to KEEP the Burdell Score as it is but also analyze similar data in a slightly different way too. It seems that longer lines are more likely to have a 0% Burdell score and I believe you could reward longer lines with this addition.
    *** Instead of losing % for straying off the line, reward following the line closely. For example, gain a full point for each meter travelled within Platinum. Gain a half point for each meter within Gold. Gain a quarter point for each meter travelled within Silver.
    *** No points gained or lost for each meter travelled within Bronze.
    *** Points taken away (negative points) for distances travelled beyond the bronze. This would create a reward and penalty system based on distance travelled (line length) and proximity to the line.
    The benefits of this new score could be:
    1) It uses the same data you already collect. and is a similar analysis to the Burdell score
    2) It has no upper or lower limits unlike the 0% possible Burdell score.
    3) Leaderboard possibilities. For example "Tom crossed England with a score of "x" while A&A crossed England with a score of "y". It would be possible to top someone else's score with a combination of longer line attempt and smaller deviations from the line.
    4) Rewards those who stay true to their line while penalizing those who deviate.
    Future possible expansion:
    *** Potential factor in the terrain type and elevation changes into the score.
    I'm probably late in suggesting this, please forgive me if you have heard this suggestion many times before.
    Thanks for the exciting videos and the new sport of straight lining you have created.
    Cheers and Congratulations on your successful line across England.
    A fan from Canada.

    As a firefighter (and now helicopter pilot) I had a case where some kids had climbed up on a cliff and one had broken his leg and couldn't get down. We pretty quickly found out that we couldn't get him down using ropes, or at least that it would take hours. So the helicopter was called and hoisted him away.
    Yes it took some time, but more like 2 hours. The main thing in my experience is for the rescue personnel to realize they can't do the rescue and call for the big guys.
    So my point being, don't worry about laying there for 8 hours Tom, you'd have to really dig yourself down in the middle of the pile for that 😄

    33:40 This is almost definitely more trouble than it's worth, but one US State where it would be actually legal, possible, and safe to do a straight line mission is New Hampshire. The narrow northern section of the state near Canada is almost all wild forest and logging roads, with some interesting terrain mixed in. New Hampshire also doesn't have any dangerous wildlife aside from just being aware of black bears (the only 'threat' they pose is stealing your food overnight if you're camping).

    Idahoan here. Although I would love a straight line mission in the USA, I think could be a bad idea. A place like Delaware is more feasible, but Idaho isn't.The panhandle region of Idaho is swarming with what you mentioned: cougars, bears, ticks, moose, etc. This doesn't even deal with landowners and that is not something you should mess with. The panhandle of Idaho has a VERY high gun ownership level largely because of how wild the environment is. Depending on state/local laws, a property owner has the right to shoot at you if they think you are a threat to their land, meaning you might not have a chance to argue why they should let you through.
    Another issue focuses on what angle do you want to approach the mission: secrecy or safety? Secrecy: full camo but runs the risk of getting unintentionally shot because people hunt on their properties (unlike the hunting "estate" in the UK, here you can just do it on your land (with exceptions)). If you go the safety route with orange vest and stuff, you're less likely to get unintentionally shot but more likely to get caught/run off the land.
    Delaware could be better or somewhere else in the NE. Wildlife threats would be similar but fewer armed folks protecting their land. You could go two miles across Maryland and say you crossed a state (Hancock, Maryland).
    Also, it is worth mentioning to this largely UK audience: the vast majority of people who own guns are not scary or bad people, however in this circumstance, it is not something you want to deal with.

      This is a good approach, but you do have to be careful.
      You will have to introduce this tech to your son eventually, or your son might end up being an adult who doesn't know how to use these devices which are, for better or worse, ubiquitous in the modern day and that everyone will assume he knows how to use.
      Devices like tablets and smartphones are essential technologies, that you have to know how to use, although it is fair to argue they *shouldn't* be and that this is unhealthy for our societies, it does not change the fact that they are. Hell, I can't even pay my damn rent without a smartphone for the payment app my apartment complex uses, and I feel this is going to get worse going forward, not better.
      My opinion is it should be developmentally safe to do this by age 10, if you can make sure your kid forms healthy habits around these devices and does not get sucked in by intentionally addictive stuff like social media.

    Idea for a type of mission. Have a end goal location and have no maps at all to get there. Perhaps just an "itinerary" prepared by someone else, which is just a list of towns and villages. You have to follow footpath signs and ask for directions at each village about how best to get to the next location by foot. This is how people used to travel in medieval times and I find it fascinating. GPS and phone used for emergencies only. Extra points if you do it dressed as a medieval monk.

Certainly for young kids (under 2) it just hypnotizes them, does nothing for their development. My only caveat is that it is occasionally useful, for times like long car journeys, getting them to eat something when they're being very fussy (bad habit I know), or just grabbing a quick break. I managed to mostly avoid until past 1 year old. It's very hard to completely avoid. But if you can or limit it a lot, so much the better really. Good luck!

    Welsh Greg absolute hero, and so are you Tom. I would love another how not to travel video. Everyone who tells me they’re Inter railing around Europe I say ‘hire some razor scooting and scale the alps on summer’

    As for an interesting experience, a very different type of adventure and certainly an entertaining thing to watch would be you taking part in a season of Jet Lag: The Game, in some competition throughout Europe - it‘s usually only a few days of actual competition (plus several weeks of planning, but I assume that can be done remotely) and your skills and knowledge would be quite cool.

    33:34 On the question of straightlining a US state, I will say that when I (a Brit) lived in Pennsylvania I was walking along a public footpath in a rural area and a guy in full camouflage jumped out of a hedgerow, pointed a crossbow at me, and told me that I would be “in a world of pain” if I stepped off the path onto his land, which I had shown no indication that I was about to do. So, yeah, based on that one experience I would suggest giving it a swerve.

    TIP FOR FOGGY GOGGLES -- I have gone snorkeling/scuba diving a bunch and one trick we used for foggy goggles is we'd keep an eyedropper (like an empty Visine bottle) full of dish soap. You just dab a tiny bit on the inside of the goggle lense and spread it around, then just do a quick rinse dipping it into the water quickly and dumping it out. The residue of soap prevents condensation from building up and lasts a long time before you need to reapply. Just keeping them clean with isopropyl alcohol or other types of cleaning product (probably some specialized ones out there for this very thing) would be helpful too, but after all the years testing different methods, the dish soap works the longest and best.

    Vegetables are a huge source of carbs that last much much longer than candy in a mission like this. I was a ranger and the way we ate kept us going for a very long time.

    Parent of 4 here - I've tried to be strict with screens too and it is hard. I'm not laughing at what you said, I think it's a great attitude and I hope you manage to find a good balance with your family. From my experience, the key is to delay introducing regular screentime for as long as possible, and to get them interested and absorbed in other activities (especially outdoor and physical activities) as early as possible. If you do this, you'll create a good foundation of interest in other things and wanting to be outdoors and adventurous and moving their bodies, and wanting to spend time with you too. It also creates great early memories which will always stay with them and make it more likely they'll be active adults in the future. Then when they do start having more exposure to screens it'll be easier to manage. Another thing to note is it's much easier to control screentime with younger children. Once they get to tween/teenage you just won't be able to do much about it. This is why that foundation I mentioned is so important, so they can better self-regulate their screen time as they get older. That's my unsolicited advice for the day!

    15:40 I'll give you some advice from my brother and his kid: Try to keep most screen time to when you go out to restaurants or long car rides, basically anywhere that's not at home. It creates an incentive once you're out of the newborn and small infant stage for the kid to be super pumped to go out because they know they get to watch their videos, it keeps them relatively quiet and occupied at restaurants, and the parents actually get out of the house and get a nice night all together. My nephew is 5 now and still has pretty limited screen time at home, but my brother and his wife have been going out to nice restaurants and other social gatherings since my nephew could sit up on his own (over 4 years now).

    I've had an idea... Triangular Missioning. From a starting point, walk as far as you can in one direction in a straight line, turn 60 degrees and walk the same distance, then repeat until you are back where you started. The challenge becomes, what is the largest triangle to can complete.

    ive been thinking about the scoring problem from the last video and i came upon the conclusion that the failure boundary should be set upon a deviation that is a function of the length of the route in kilometers. to find this function i looked back to wales one where the boundaries where first set, and here we find that the route was 53km in length and max allowed deviation was 100m. from here i could then know that our max deviation was 0.00188% of the distance and this would be the new failure threshold. this new system would allow for higher tolerances on longer more challenging missions and lower tolerances on shorter more focused challenges. currently my only observed issue with the system is that it doesnt take into account elevation change but im sure it could be worked in somehow.

    I'd love to see you commentate on that. Remember, some of the most iconic sports commentators of all time didnt have to be fully immersed in all the technicalities of the sport, they just need to know how to convey it, and you're a master at that. I think it'd be great to see it, even if it's just once.

    The point on farmers are that they are typically more agressive and territorial than your average person. Although Tom's saying he's not actually scared of the farmers themselves you may have reason to. I remember doing duke of ed and in our planning our instructors told us of a farm that was to be avoided at all cost (in an area where hiking through was supposed to be permitted), because there had been intances in years gone by where the farmer shouted and fired warning shots to get DofE groups off his land. It may feel more sketchy to go through someone's back garden, but the reality is, people don't really have much in their back gardens to steal. Farmers can be paranoid about losing a flock of sheep to rustlers or even just one prize ram, and unlike most other people in the UK, they are likely to have a gun licence.

    Festering meat is one of the most pungent eye watering stenches possible; if those black bags actually contained a body you'd have smelt it before you saw it. Assuming the smell didn't force you off the line.

    Regarding the screentime issue, I don't think being strict is necessary. I don't think I can see how a kid with a dad like you could NOT get inspired to get outdoors and challenge themselves :D
    From my experience any kind of strictness only made the relationship with my parents more adversarial and it definitely did not give me genuine motivation to get outside.

    if you do visit the usa, make sure you pay attention to elevations in the mountain areas. elevation sickness can mess you up esp if you do heavy exercise. i dont think its life threatening for a healthy person but it could cost a mission, though you do acclimate pretty quickly.
