You were closer than you thought you were on the Hollywoodland one. The location was inaccurately placed. The actual location of the photo was approximately 3224 Ledgewood Drive. You can tell using the sign, that distinctive house (6182 West Mulholland Highway), and Google Maps 3D. This means you were actually only 165m out.
Without sounding like a jackass, I think you meant 465 meters? I got to a similar position after looking, as I was curious whether you were correct in the misplacement and well spotted by the way.
I think the year was incorrect too - that looks like a Ford Model A judging by the bumpers, and those weren't in production until 1927. When searching that image which is quite well known, I couldn't find a reference for the specific year which it was taken so it's likely the person who submitted the photo just put 1923 as that's the year the sign was put up.
@@aceman0000099 It was essentially a massive billboard advertising the development, it was never meant to be permanent. “Shortened to save money” isn’t quite right, the “LAND” part was just the part that collapsed first, the rest of it just stuck around long enough to eventually become an iconic landmark that people gradually came to see as worth preserving and, eventually, restoring (if you ever see any close up views of the sign from the late 60s-early 70’s, it’s in pretty rough shape. It’s only at this point that the sign underwent a “restoration” that pretty much replaced it with something actually intended to be a permanent structure.)

The West Village is currently one of the priciest areas of NYC but was dangerous in 1980. New Zealand completed its switch to metric in December 1976. The surrounding area had been known as Hollywood for some time, but their specific development was called 'Hollywoodland'. The sign became derelict and was going to be torn down in the 40's. But by that point it was a famous landmark, so the city decided to repair and preserve it. But they chose not to spend money saving the 'land' part, because 'Hollywood' was the place's name, but 'Hollywoodland' was just a defunct real estate scheme by then. The whole thing had become dilapidated again by the 70's and had to be completely replaced with more durable, but slightly smaller letters.

New Zealand changed to km sometime in the 70s, I think. I remember dual numbers on the signs and in the car speedos for about a ten year span into the 80s as we transitioned.

Good idea You could also take the angle between the 2 signs and say that it is one angle of a triangle with the 2 cities and our location as the points. We can work out our location from that in a few ways. You could get a line around the world of all the points at the correct angle to those 2 cities; repeat for another pair of cities and see where those interect. My method would be for if you couldn't measure distance but could measure angles. Your method has a much much much lower margin of error. Maybe if you repeated my method for all the cities the errors would average out somewhat.

I am Australian and I remember when they changed the signs, they put little temporary "km" signs above the number so that you knew which units you were dealing with. Pretty sure I remember hearing that Hollywoodland was the name of a land development and so this was an advertisement for people to buy land in the area.
Literally the first thing I noticed about the sign was it was topped with "Air New Zealand", so definitely at an airport. I'm shocked he didn't pick up on that.

Yeah, Tameike-sano station is smooshed between a lot of other well-known names in that area, which is where the parliament and ministries are, so it tends to get little real estate on the map.

Tom in the Queenstown round the 6km mark would have measured from the start of the road up the mountain, which is probably a distance away from the peak marked on the map. As well as this, the reason coronet peak is marked on the map even though it’s a slightly smaller mountain is because it’s a famous ski field.
10:13 That distinctive mountain ridge has been seen by many over the years, it is the one from the fellowship of the ring where they travel along the side of a mountain ridge (there's a ski slope on the other side).

Well played ! It wouldn’t have helped here, but it’s worth knowing that 山 san/yama in Japanese usually means a ‘mountain ’- (In Chinese too). Here 山王 Sanno is the alternate name of the nearby Hie Shinto shrine, and 溜池 Tameke refers to a reservoir that once covered the area. Tameke-Sanno subway station opened in 1997.
From the previous versions I remember you doing of this, you were a lot closer with the years this time. In previous videos you were 10+ years off on some guesses.
You could see Ginza, Chiyoda and Marunouchi lines at that Tokyo station. Marunouchi is in Chiyoda too so somewhere around that area would've scored a little bit higher but you weren't too far off anyway - you plonked near Shinjuku station and that has a lot of converging train lines too.

For Japan those numbers on the signs are the exit numbers for the specific station, and the line names are the colored circles there. Not all the signs look the same though so you just have to learn the general style. Fortunately train signs in Japan all have English on them as well. You can make it out easier in Japanese but the lines are Ginza (銀座線), Nanboku(南北線), Chiyoda (千代田線), and Marunouchi (丸ノ内線). If you can find those lines and where they all intersect you'll come across the station.
The Hollywoodland pictures is definitely not from 1923. The car is at least 2 years more recent, probably a 1927/1928 Chevrolet. A car specialist could be more accurate
The third round was pretty easy for me - I lived in Queenstown and worked at Coronet Peak ski field for 3 years. That image looks like a postcard which I now want to find!
Timeguessr is sooo disappointing when you get to the nitty-gritty level. Several times I’ve located the exact location of places in my home town, only to be greeted by a message that my result was 103 meters from the correct location.
Covid cases are 3x higher right now than in summer of 2020 but sure. "Hopefully we never have to wear those things again." some of us never stopped. Some of us are immunocompromised and have been wearing them during flu season since before the pandemic ever started.
Great thing to do after each stage is go into Google Maps and compare how things have changed. The Hollywood hills one would’ve been a great one to look at.

@7:16 Pretty sure all distances on that sign are in miles. It's about 15000 km to North Pole from there.
Timeguessr is sooo disappointing when you get to the nitty-gritty level. Several times I’ve located the exact location of places in my home town, only to be greeted by a message that my result was 103 meters from the correct location.
The developer has said it’s because he has to geo stamp each location manually

Great thing to do after each stage is go into Google Maps and compare how things have changed. The Hollywood hills one would’ve been a great one to look at.
