Oh! We were ALL so young then! Poor Willy isn't looking well, even then. Humph is looking spritely, and Tim has just over 40 years to live... I feel unsure about knowing these things. Barry looks much the same, really! I just feel SO old!!!
Tim prob caught covid at that last recorded ISHAC in a theatre. I dont think the pic is necessarily from 1979 but is one of the BBC generic ones. Given Grahaem was supposed to be a doctor he didnt look after the others very well !
Where was Barry ? (prob wrote the script for this one - as it follows a theme, thanks for confirming this was the first special ( though I think the News Huddlines might have had earlier christmas specials, and then The News Quiz joined in years later with a special too. Humph in Wonderland is prob the best. Given ISHAC started in 1972, 67 shows in 7 years would be about 8 shows in a season, I thought they went for a bit longer each year. Ideal Radio 4 for students when we were in digs and could not afford a TV licence (or the time to be distracted by it). Coming on at lunch or dinner time listened two with the smell of cheap bacon and eggs under the grill (which was odd as I was supposed to be having shepherds pie that night).
Barry was unwell, Humph says at the start. Replaced by John Junkin. Lovely programme although I doubt they would get away with some of the material today, doesn’t make it wrong or not funny.
It is rather distressing to hear in these archive recordings how Mornington Crescent, that venerable and cerebral contest involving such mental gymnastics and awareness of the streets of the capital, was played with such a seemingly cavalier disrespect of the rules. Standards must be maintained and any tendency to denigrate or trivialise this bastion of high intellectual thought has to be resisted. I call upon all who care for this exemplar of the complexity of the human mind to make it's future safe by getting all newly installed MP's to recognise it's importance and to call for a motion that safeguards its longevity and protects it from the threats posed by so many in positions of power.
Thank you for posting this.
Happy Christmas thank you
brilliant, thankyou 🙂 x
No Barry, but another comedy legend in the shape of John Junkin.....
Ooof - that's showing it's vintage a bit there. "You can't see them unless they're smiling." Oh dear. And what a shame there's no Barry!
