    I think of the burgess shale layer in the fossil record when I think of ammonites.

    It seems like the open spirals are open corkscrews were an in-between from long pointy shells and the given resulting structure. That last one though just seems like it decided that a shell's a shell and called it a day.

    I remember reading somewhere that these shell shapes were actually pretty hydrodynamically stable or something. I think that was specifically about Nipponites though.

    some of these shells remind me of those guys with really long fingernails. makes me wonder how much of their shell growth is intentional and how much is just "i guess this is my life now"

    Multiceratoidea: finally, a worthy opponent
    Seriously, the multiceratoids and heteromorph ammonites had some strikingly similar shells. Mariella is basically just the ammonite version of Lorieroceras.
